Most today's RTS games (if there's more than just a very few today) delve into combination of Strategy coupled with RPG elements, example being told of above with Warcraft III.
If you're willing to try those, I can recommend Spellforce 1 and 2 (second especially is improved over the first), though they're also few years old now. Truth to be told I don't know any other recent RTS title worth mentioning. C&C is just a thinned out, cloned shadow of the first parts, but there's Starcraft II out which is pretty much what you have on hand with recent RTS.

Yeah, Spellforce 1 and 2 are pretty cool, but, they are far more RPG-like than Warcraft 3
