Well they start thinking about it when you hit the 1000 posts mark. I was I VIP very early on (when I joined) but only got the special name once I got 1000 posts - it was OK, but I asked an admin to thange it (prefer the one I have now).

I'm not VIP or near a 1000 posts!

I've just been pretty active on the forum and for whatever reason an admin decided to change my title - and I'm quite happy with the result!

I always found the standard ones provided me with an incentive to be more active around the forum and get away from "newbie spammer" and "forum hobbit".
