i dont think ps2 needs anything extra to play dvds
I don't have personal experience with it but from what I gather you need to buy a special remote control for it (50-60 Euro) to be able to play the DVD's.

Well, it is well known that PS2 games are mainly one player and GameCube games are mainly multiplayer. However, I have no idea about Xbox.

If you plan to play alone often then a PS2 is probably fine. But if you want to play a lot with your friends, don't take one. You'll be disapointed unless your group is the pen&paper style who like to watch someone playing RPG or the like...
I've believed it is other way around.

GameCube has no multiplayer options, if I'm correct. Both PS2 and X-Box have it.

I own PS2, and I used to have XBox too (will get it again). PS2 is back compatible with PS1/PSX, so you can play all of them too.

Picard,
as far as I know, you don't need any extension to play DVDs on either of them. Only if you don't like to use your game pad as remote control, you can get wireless remote controller.

Ahh well okay. Not like I can speak from personal knowledge here.

Nope, I was at a party a couple of weeks ago, one of my friends brought his Gamecube and most of the games he had were good multiplayer ones.

@ picard - there are some chop mods to be able to watch different regions DVD, but that's another story

@ Havell - my bad. Multiplayer for me is not 2-4 people playing game on the same console. I was thinking of multiplayer over the net. I have network adapter on my PS2, and XBox comes with one. You can play games online.

There is a lot of 2 player games for PS2/XBox too.

GameCube is only good if you like to play mario/metroid/zelda games, as you can play them only on GameCube.

I never moded any of my consoles, but now I am considering to mode PS2 to be able to play emulators on it. (SNES & Genesis)

Fair enough then, Gamecube cannot play over the internet but consoles in general aren't really adapted for internet play.

Well I checked ebay and there's definetely more PS2 games around (5 times as many as XBOX) so that is a good pro for the ps2. I already have a DVD-player so that's not really gonna win me over. The MODding of an XBox could be nice, after all, a DOSBOx console would be great, but then again... aaarghh... I've got to sleep a bit on this one...

@Hawell - That's changing since Sega Dreamcast was out.

Today a lot of people are buying consoles just for this purpose. It's much better, as it's much harder to cheat in game. Even handheld consoles have multiplayer today (you can connect 2 GBA/GBA SP or now up to 16NDS).

@reup - I never moded console, and I heard positive and negative stories. BUt just the other day I heard of easy way to mode PS2, but only old model. Mod is 2 times more expensive then regular mod chips, but most important there is no need to weld any wire in console. All you have to do is to place mod in proper location and it should work.

XBox comes with 9Gb harddisk. Moded XBox can store more, and some people replaced DVD with DVD-R and made XBox in to DVD recorder.

I woudln't say console multiplaying is much better. It might be harder to cheat in games (which is admittedly a good thing) but there are many more aspects to multiplaying. How easy it is to control for instance. What kind of lag times there are. How many people can fit on a server. And of course the quality of the games themselves.

You right. That's more personal preference...

I prefer more to play console games, as I don't have to care about hardware compatibility. Like my PS2 gamepad and like more to play in living room then in computer room.

Same applly to multiplayer.
