Well I guess we've exausted out top writers list, so...
But I'd like to add two more names:
Rene Goscinny & Albert Uderzo.
They aren't book writers, but their work influenced me and I hope many others too!

@Stroggy - I know Ghoete is from the romantic perion, bu tI still don't have to like all that sweetness.

You're right, but what can you do about it?
Alsob ear in mind that Romanticism came just after classicism. And classicism was quite poor from a cultural perspective. It was strict, with guidelines and created little of value. Compared to that Romanticism was a beacon of light. Anyway, I'm straying off topic.

I've been a fan of Jack Kerouac for several years by now, and recently managed to get my girlfriend hooked on his books as well. The pace of his writing is just overwhelming.

Other great authors I would be willing to recommend to anyone would be Mikhail Bulgakov and Flann O'Brien. Such masters of the art of writing are hard to find these days.
