I offered to review Daughter Of the Serpent (no relation), but unfortunately I can't
get the game to install or run. I have the 6 meg zipped download, if anyone else wishes to take it on. The game is a mystery/horror adventure and needs to run in pure DOS.

Here is the tech help that might help someone else (my floppy drive doesn't work):

<<<<I have Daughter of the Serpents running okay on my pewter, but only in Pure DOS -- that is booting straight into DOS without loading Windows at all. When I've tried running it via Windows I get a black screen and it freezes up. You mentioned DOS... did you boot straight into DOS? If not-
There are a few ways to achieve this, the easiest way for you might be a bootdisk. There's one on the FAQ page that works well with most computers; if you want to give it a try be sure to read the readme!! file that's included in the download. The .zip inside the download is meant to be unzipped onto a floppy disk, not your Hard Drive.
If you are trying it in Pure DOS and having no luck check to make sure you unRARed the archive ok. You should have 2 subdirectories off of the game directory
\Graphics
\Records

Hang on to that bootdisk- you'll find that it will come in handy with quite a few of the oldies here. Some just refuse to run in Windows, and when in doubt it's always best to run these gems in the enviroment they were written for: DOS. You'll want to check the review page of the games here for any Tech Notes. You'll note that UD advises to run this one in Pure DOS only.
I'm still playing this one off and on (so many games, so little time :P ) but so far it looks neat.
There's no manual available for this one, so let me note-
To start the game run RUN.COM (not the serpent file). It's takes a while to intialize. Be patient.
To access the the Inventory & Game Options, move the cursor to the bottom right and click the mouse button. Then, to get into the Game Options (SAVE, LOAD, etc) click on the cook's handbook and select "Essentials for your visit".>>>

Just pm me with your email addie if you wish to play and review this game, and I'll send it to you ASAP.

EDIT:

O-kaaaaay, please disregard the former. I've done some more research and I've got the game to work.

this was the solution:

<All you really have to do is make sure that the game's original directory structure is maintained. INSTALL.BAT should do this, but it doesn't.
Really, the easiest way to do this is as follows:
-Extract all the game's files to a folder named DAUGHTER.
-Put all the CHR files in a subfolder named RECORDS
-Put all the other files in another subfolder named GRAPHICS, except for
CHKLIST.CPS
HILOAD.BIN
LOLOAD.BIN
SYSTEM.BIN
RUN.COM
SERPENTS.COM
INSTALL.RPT >

But it's been an absolute pain from go to wo - including getting a week's ban for downloading more than one file...which I didn't do, btw. :  The next hurdle is finding out how to save/load/exit because there's no interface and the usual keys don't work.

Thanks for the thumbs up, Tom Sorry to hear about your laptop. Not to worry...we'll all pitch in and get you another for your birthday. You deserve it.

New members come in the front line of reviewers as we like to give them a chance to show what they can do. (This was how Wendy began, by taking a game from FreeFreddy. She ACED her test and is now part of the crew )

Sure it was worthy. It's just in the queue. Remember two updates per day

Just to reiterate (in case the edit on my previous, rather lengthy, message was overlooked,)

Daughter of The Serpent is now working - in a fashion. So I'll review it as originally planned.
