Interesting. I thought it was very well handled, with great quests, numerous unexpected twists to the plot, and nice game balance.

A toss up between Ultima 4 or 7, but I voted for Ultima 4. It introduced so many new concepts never seen in Computer RPGs at the time that it was a quite a landmark. By far longer and bigger than Ultima 1-3 combined. It was one of the first that had consequences in your development based on your actions with NPC's. A dynamic changing world, night and day cycles, NPC with thier own schedules. It was awhile before other companies attempted this and still you see games like Fable, KOTOR, acclaimed as revolutionary, when Lord British started doing this back in the early 80's over 20 years ago.
U7 rocked though. It had (and still does) have some nice graphics, and after 6 previous games, Ultima 7 was such a polished game with so much to do. So as a game U7 is the best IMO, but for historical reasons and the effect on the gaming world, I think U4 had a much bigger impact. U 1- 3 are pretty fun though. You can finish them in a pretty quickly as they are pretty short (U1 and U2 maybe a couple days, U3 maye a week or two?). But one thing I like about U1 and U2 is the humor and the time travel. If I remember right, you can visit other galaxies with a spaceship and also even visit McDonald's. The later Ultima's lost the sci-fi aspect, which I kinda was sad about that. |
