Far from that. What you need is a little freeware program called DOSBox.

This guide should get you started.

I'm having trouble getting this game to run on Dosbox. What do I have to do?

If you would explain your trouble, we could probably help you.

Good point. When I try to run the game with dosbox, I get an error telling me of an illegal command: sett.exe. I get the same for intro.exe. I tried running the install executable, but I could not get that to work right. I'm not sure that I'm entering the correct things there.

Have you tried redownloading it? And what system are you running?

If you get Illegal command:, you are not in the right directory or made a typing error. Btw, you should start the game with one of the BATs.

And speaking of BATs:

Shouldn't "settlers" and "settlern" be switched?

I tried redownloading it. I'm still getting the same problem. I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.11.

I'm in the right directory, and my typing is fine. I've also tried starting the game with each of the different BAT files, but to no avail.

I'm not so sure about that .... the 'illegal command' you get is typical for /wrong mounts/typos/....

Whilst in your settlers dir (in dosbox of course) input

dir /w

You should get something as:
