OK guys and guyesses!

I need information, advice and personal opinions or experiences are welcome as well:

1. Are VIA chipsets any good? Or should I rather go for a mainboard with a different chipset?
2. Would you rather take more MHz or higher L2-Cache on an Athlon 64?

The question bases on the thought of mine to put a new PC-system together.
I'm not too much of an overclocker, but I think it's nice though (I'm pleased with 10-20%).
So these questions go towards stability and performance. Not just if it works.

I know this is a really nerdy topic but I need second thoughts here. Otherwise I'd think I'm missing something.

I think L2 cache is more important than mhz cause I have an athlon whose clock is at 1833mhz (it's more than 4 years old btw) but it is much much slower than some models at slower clock but with more cache/better acrhitecture.

1. I have never had problems with VIA abut no doubt somebody else will be along to say via is devil spaw rubbish etc etc

2. why not try for both , unless there is a real difference in price . I am presuming that you are going for a 2 core machine? also as many people will probably say It all depends what you are running but more often the graphics card and memory will be the thing that really affects the system performance so if you compromise a bit on the CPU for the sake of the graphics card you might end up better off.

I think there are just too many factors in the equation to easily advise on something like this but just remember to check about for those prices and keep an eye out for any good offers.

is it cheaper to build a maschine from parts then buy it completed?

are there any issues with dual cores and old "programmes"?

GraCa and Mem are fixed so I'm going to optimize the CPU.

300€?!?! wow that are some good sources. anyway i am soon going to need a new one, cause i plan to move out on my own.

was checking the offers of complete computers an dthey are mighty strange. either they put in excelent graphics card and weak processor or they give in strong processor and weak graphics or no ram.

heh they sell 512 MB RAM comupters with Windows VISTA. yeah right... like i would buy that kind of config for vista

Yes, and it's not my friend from 'round the corner making a special price.
No, I have a really good german hardwareshop on the web. And since my external I/O-devices and my case are still good, I just go for a new board, RAM and CPU.

Sounds like DELL to me. They always do that. And then they say "Hey but we have RAM here for you at only [triple the normal price]! <_<

no it's not Dell, it's Comtron and the rest (some slovenian brands of computer assembled together here - relativelly cheap and reliable systems)

we just bought some mobo which had both sata and ata, which was great. It had 2 ATA, so i could hook up the two old disks and CD and DVD. we then added some Athlon 3800+ (2.2.GHz, single core). since it had AGP i could also add my old graphics card. we added 1 GB of latest RAM and bought WinXP. works like a charm so far.

i payed only 55 EUR for motheboard. it has nVidia chipset. works ok.

but i know that in germany computer parts are cheaper. i don't kow why, but it was always like that.

wow i just assembled myself a computer an dit was way cheaper then the already assembled ones (even thought they wweren't any particular brand).

i am still not sure is it better to use dual core or single core? are there any issues with dual core processors?

I got the information in mean time that you'll only experience the full power of dual core when you do a lot of graphic stuff, video cutting and MS Visual Studio.

So no Dual-Core for me.
