Well myself, I think PNG is best for images with a limited amount of continuous colors (low frequencies), whereas its size is too big and JPG is better for photographic images with millions of colors or high frequencies. The loss isn't so noticeable, and can indeed be customized to reach an efficiency far superior to PNG in these cases. People forget that the fact of initially scanning/digitizing anything is already always lossy.
