Even more likely cause for the drop in activity is that the forum no longer allows guests to post anywhere.
It happened one time on the old forum, when it was under heavy bot attacks. The guest posting was switched back on after a few days and a few dozen new filters, but in the meantime the results were pretty much identical with the current situation.
