I've found out why - the file names on the server must match the game title on site.
Some enterprising soul removed apostrophes from the titles on the site, so it was trying to download a file named
Montezumas Return rather than
Montezuma's Return.
Same for every other game that had an apostrophe in the title.
I have taken steps to fix this for the affected games but it's possible that whoever, whenever did this has caused similar havoc with other games.
