you can fill your canteen, when you're at a source and it's still enough water there after drinking. put it inside the building and right-click it. you'll need:
2 rations for a bottle
3 rations for a canteen
5 rations for a water bag
you drink and eat automatically as long as you've got water or food in inventory.

you have to assign a name for the savegame first. click on the bar reading ".gam", you can type in a name then. after that the save button will work.
