Default Trying to identify game

Hey, I was curious if any of you can help me figure out what game I'm thinking of. Here's all the details I can remember about it:

-Graphic adventure game, had at least VGA graphics, point and click interface
-pretty sure it was an educational game
-the section I played took place in a cheerful suburban-looking area
-I'm pretty sure I remember a larger map view, and also an interior area, like maybe a garage or a kitchen
-in the part I played you were trying to determine what had caused the salinity of the nearby stream to rise
-I think you were playing as some sort of kid, maybe a teenager
-I don't remember what year this was, but I think the dominant web browser at the time was Mosaic (to try and help date things)

Sorry I can't remember any more details on it, but I figure maybe one of your guys might know what it is.
