you can't actually kill your enemies, but prevent them from occupying locations by "blocking" them with your own men. the game is won when you've occupied a certain number of locations around the big cities. you can keep an eye on your progress in the status menu, which is accessable from the main map.
i never found out, if armour (leather jackets, trousers, steel helmets...) has any effect. also some other items like furs, tires etc. don't seem to have any practical use. these items are valuable for trade however.
if someone has experiences with armour items, it would be kind to post them here.
