But 95% of the time, the "only" CDROM drive should be set to slave.
If you plug the CD drive in the same IDE plug as your hard disk, then the CD drive must be "slave" (it usually is). But if it is "alone", it should be set to "master" or "cable select". I belive that is just a question of "master"/"slave" definition, so try it on sereval ways.

And if your CD drive is alone, maybe you should check the connection cable too. Sometimes when "we" disconnect a drive, "we" pull the cable wrong and it can became damaged.
