That hole is for manually ejecting a CD that may be stuck in the tray. There's a tiny button in there that you push with a needle. It's irellevant to your current problem.
If this CDROM is the only one, then just have a look at what master/slave setting your old one was, if you haven't thrown it away yet.
But 95% of the time, the "only" CDROM drive should be set to slave.
