As for the topic, I would also try with Solar Winds for solely because of 360 degree gameplay, although plot is way too different. You can check sites with "similar games" options, like hotud.org, and see what games are related to Solar Winds or Star Control.
There is kind of a similar topic for unknown space game, so could it be
