It's definitely not caused by your saves, or the version of the game you've got. Will check D-Fend, that's one of three likely culprits (second being DOSBox, third being your machine).

I'd say you're overspecced. It ran on 100 mHz 486 (and possibly slower systems too), with 16 MB RAM. Take out 128 MB of your RAM and try again.
