There is a main quest line in Morrowind, which you automatically follow (it's the Blades-trail), but there are very many side-quests and every guild offers its own quest-line. So, you can play for weeks without following the main quest, but you can also finish to game in a couple of days if you forget about all the other quests.
Morrowind has it's flaws and certainly isn't the best RPG ever written, but it's vast, detailed and has given (and still gives) me hours of fun (too many hours in fact
). That's why I'm looking forward to Oblivion
