Well, I'm not a developer myself, but I've read a lot about the business, and we've did a lot of marketing for Abandonia through it's social networks.
The way I see it, if you're developing your own video games, and would like to draw attention to your product, you need to use all the social networks that are popular out there:
- Youtube
- Facebook
- Twitter
You need to create promotional material that looks appealing, a few trailers, gameplay videos and such can't hurt. Well, if you have anything to show, first of all, but I suppose you do, of course. I am not sure what
"complete success on local level" means, could you please elaborate?
The indie scene - the one where small-scale developers begin - is interesting and fairly easy to grasp the concept of: you begin writing a game from scratch, showcase your progress on your website and social rings, then release the game either free of charge, commercially, or shareware / adware / whateverware. As you did not specify the platform you're targeting, it is hard to give further advices. I recommend the Android OS if you're familiar with mobile devices, where at least 75% of the users are likely to give unknown but appealing titles a try. If you develop for PC, then you might want to consider creating a Kickstarter, or submitting your finished product to Steam Greenlight.
