So, you figured out the controls... Combination of Shift and numpad keys right? Anyway, you probably have worst armor and weapons. Go to blacksmith in town and buy better ones once you can afford those. When you buy the best ones (which are expensive I think) most of duels will be easy. However, I remember some fights, I had best equipment but sometimes the opponent hits me and kill me with single blow, making several times greater damage than the one needed to kill me. But then I load and fight again and everything is normal. It was probably some bug.
