Well, there are many differences between the two. In SMAC you only have one planet and not the several "planets" you have on the sci fi of ToT. SMAC also has new and different map, which in many ways is better but also worse. It is more 3D and you can clearly see the elevations. Though (for me) it is far more difficult to know when you are on a mountain and when you are on a hill. There are some major differences in diplomacy and gameplay. Like the use of Borders and a much better diplomatic system. Or for example the customizing of units. Where ToT Sci Fi scenario is ToT in a different setting, if you play SMAC thinking of Civ in space (or alpha centauri) you might feel dissapointed by the game. BUT, if you take SMAC for a strategy game unrelated to Civ (as it should have been promoted IMO), then you are in for a treat, cause it is a very good strategy game.
