you need to acheive a certain amount of credits in order to pass. for each subject you are rewarded by some credits (it depends on the subject how much). it is up to you which subjects you choose, you just need to have enough of accumulative credits
of course, some subjects use to be obligatory (especially on high school i guess), some voluntary
