If Dark Elves are the same with Drow, then in Menzoberranzan you get Drizzt Do'Urden to join you rather early in the game. If you decide to keep him in your party of four, he will accompany you about halfway through the game.
OT: How is Icewind Dale II? Months ago I bought it from a bargain bin in a local gamestore, but until now have not played it yet. All those D&D 3.5 rules look quite complicated for a newbie RPG player like me.
