I found the narrator's overacting and accentuation of the wrong parts of the sentences grating, too.
(The text would say "It IS the best" and she'd say it like "It is the BEST".)

I'm watching The Beast Within longplay now and I don't like the character interpretation there, either - Grace is rude right off the bat and for quite a long time with
everyone, even her host, in a foreign country, and Gabriel is all shy and awkward - and he's the guy who had a score of girls after him and shattered a voodoo cult. Actually, everybody's acting way to openly with new people, whether they're incredibly hostile or spilling all the secrets. There are moments when I feel like I'm watching
Passions.
The only believable characters are Übergrau and the zoo-keeper.
That said, the story's got me hooked.
