Text-based game?!

The dialouges are text-based, yes... as they couldn't incorporate a speech-pack for the game (1991). The rest of the game is point-n-click.

You move with the cursors and do everthing else with the mouse. (Although you can use speed-keys for the actions, like L for LOOK and A for Attack).

GREAT GAME!

Good point. I worked for four years in a text-based, charge-for-play MMORPG, and that wasn't a bit like Ultima VII or its spinoffs.

I can only wish that Garriott had seen fit to continue in their direction--since it's really where the BG series and PS:T came from. But Garriott never listened to anyone else, and when he decided action games were the wave of the future, that's where he was prepared to move his series. The problem, of course, was that they wanted RPGs, and he never realized that. Both his third person Ultima VIII and his first person Ultima IX flopped for various reasons, but the non-stop action was definitely high on the list.

Sad thing is, he still doesn't realize this. I asked him a few years ago at an E3 convention if he would ever return to the kind of pause/realtime game with a party and standalone play, and he just gave me that constipated stare he thinks quells the multitudes.
