I agree. Just make it free-text. As for its mandatory-ness... I personally don't have any troubles revealing the city I live in, but it should be optional for the sake of others (you can pick a random city if it bothers you for the moment, though
).
I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and had to pick that obscure Svalbard and Jan Mayen place (I think NATO has an airbase there
) as my country doesn't show up at all (but the Faroe Islands and Moldova do, for some reason).
