If you mean HoMM and not the similarly-named Might and Magic series, I can't agree more. Sure, 3 was annoying at times (I still swear that it was scripted to give the computer's units a defense bonus for larger stacks, but not yours), and the expansions were totally unfair, but 4's use of generals and insipid campaigns just totally sucked.
Of course, you won't like this game if you want a gripping story, either. I got to what seemed to be the final battle against the Humans and still didn't have much better an idea what was going on than I would have if I'd just been playing random missions. This is a strategy game, and made back when keeping it trimmed to bare bones was essential.
