Ethanol is just regular old drinking alcohol. It's the alcoholic component of beer, wine, hard liquor, etc. As for concentrations, I'm sure people are at least familiar with Everclear, which is 95% pure ethanol.
Denatured ethanol (which I think Kearnsy was referring to) is ethanol with toxic additives such as methanol which are added so that the final product is unsuitable for consumption and, in the US at least, exempt from the "sin tax" on alcohol.
