I guess that's exactly what's happening...

The Media are always trying to present news that can be a "sensation", no matter if they have much to say or not, the important thing is to mention it as if they know everything about that.

I see two immediate opposite sides on that:
first, they may cause panic, because no one knows for sure what's going to happen and people tend to react negatively;
second, they make people talk about it, and even if most of the things aren't said, at least we are aware of it's existence.

Now, if there are people reacting in panic even not knowing the all true, imagine how they would behave if they find out the real menace. We are talking about something that can kill people and that no one can control.

I have no doubts that 20 years ago this would be a very serious epidemic - maybe it will even turn too, but I don't think its effects will be at the same scale.

And yes, I am worried, but there's not much I can do to avoid it so, why should I be in panic?
