OK I am mystified, I can get the geoscape and everything up, but when i try and start a mission I crash to the desktop. I am using the current Xcom version off here, and I am doing it thru windows.

I am on windows XP, Ive got compatibility mode set to 95 and 256 colors with 640 resolution, which has done it in the past.

Try without compatibility :) I run it without and I get to battles and all... have an occassional drop to windows but as long as you save it's all right :)

Try using DOSBOX

I tried using dosbox, but it says that its a windows program not a dos program and won't run :(

I had this problem, but I found it ran under windows OK, just a bit fast. Try both of the executables in DOSbox (ufo defense & ufo).

UFO defense comes up with the blurry screen, and UFO comes up with the slightly faster screen, but when it starts a battle, it crashes right out.

Did you remove the compatability stuff? I just upgraded my graphics card and I still have no trouble with having it run in Xp... an occassional boot out of the game yes, but not anything specific.

I also have the same problem whenever I run the UFO defense it always start with blur screen. I can't go through the menu by that screen... but I can play the UFO earlier edition with out any problem but crash sometime.

Ok I fixed the UFO defense problem. Its caused by DXdiag.exe.
Go to Run in the start menu, type DXDIAG.exe. Go to the DISPLAY tab, and select DIRECTDRAW DISABLED.

That should get it done. But it still crashes when it enters the squad prep screen.
