I was just wondering how people here felt about absolutes. Can something be totally good? Can something be totally evil?
I believe not. Humans, and all other creatures that can reason have their own agendas but peopel are not inherently evil, and some people are not ALL evil, because they have good things about them. Hitler didn't smoke, was vegetarian, did not drink alchohol, and was very devoutly Christian. Some might say those are good things. By all accounts he was a nice guy in person. But then he goes and kills millions of people. By all accounts Winston Churchill was a grumpy, not-very-nice kind of guy. He smoked big cigars and drank a lot. But then he went and helped pull Britain through WW2. Churchill is not totally good, and neither is Hitler totally bad. Anyway, thats my view of things. Feel free to discuss "Supernatural" entities that you believe in as well. |
There's no black or white, only shades of gray...

There isn't really any good and evil. Only points of view, to a Nazi party member Hitler was good and Churchill was bad. Some people do see things as absolute so absolutes of good and evil do exist, just not from my point of view (I voted for the second option).

Only thing absolute, are sunflowers.
Aside from those, there's good and bad in everything, and which one comes up's a matter of circumstances. 't Takes alot of effort and help to push one down and help bring up the other one if the circumstances're not good for it, but I believe it's possible, with help from others. Of course, sunflowers're the exception that mark the rule. |
Absolutely not!
Well, I see your point, but if I had to spend an afternoon chatting to one of them, I'd definitely prefer Churchill over Hitler - despite the smoke and the grumpiness (hey, what can you expect from somebody who only gets three hours of sleep each night?).:D |
Maybe. ;)

Surely by answering the poll I'd be commiting myself to the answer "Yes" whichever way I voted, since the answers are both themselves absolutes.
I'd like to add -273.15 Celcius to Tiki's absolutes list. |
I vote yes.

can you be absolutely sure that there are no absolutes?
So I voted yes. |
well I do believe in Absolutes, after all, I put them in the fridge with my own hands. LOL
more to the point, I think that even good and evil itself cannot be absolute, and want to remind you of an old joke: an elder asks a caveman: -what is evil? -evil is when the warriors from a neighbouring tribe come to our village, kill our men, rape our wemen, and take our children into slavery. -and what is good? -good is when we do the same to them. |
