abandonia's RPG section is growing.. cool.. but one thing came across my mind just now..

"why Pagan before Serpent Isle??" still no review for Serpent Isle?

Data 28-06-2004 10:30 AM

for the record.
You don't need vdmsound to get sound effects/music under dosbox.

Stroggy 28-06-2004 10:56 AM

hmmm
how odd
the game runs very slowly
I've tried ctrl+f12 in dosbox but that doesn't have any effect.

Do you hear the people talk? because I can't seem to skip the dialogue... and the dialogue lasts for a very long time.

FreeFreddy 28-06-2004 12:29 PM

You have to klick with mouse on it in order to skip it.
As for the speed, I increased the cpu cycles with ctrl+F12 to 11500, this is then good speed for the game, perhaps 12500 would be perfect then.

trekky 28-06-2004 03:59 PM

Download Ultima 8

I cannot Download Ultima 8 from this site.

FreeFreddy 28-06-2004 10:56 PM

I had no problems when tried to download the game... :?

Stroggy 28-06-2004 11:27 PM

I've tried it, I think I still prefer the 7, the gloomy spirit isn't for me, and the lack of overview of quite annoying.
The animation of the PC and NPCs is quite choppy and the movement can be quite annoying IMO.

eric10051981 29-06-2004 04:22 AM

yesssssss.. ssssserpent isssssssssle issssss the besssssssst part of all..

i haven't played ultima ix - assssssssscensssssssion though.. but ssssssssome people ssssssssaid that ultima ix isssssss the worssssssssst..

(i'm trying to become the earth sssssssserpent.. 8) )

Anonymous 29-06-2004 08:55 PM

elite

this is the best ultima game I've played, and I actually own it! I only got it working for my laptop...now I'll try dosbox for this computer. I still have the box and cd, and everything!

FreeFreddy 29-06-2004 10:27 PM

Do you mean Ultima IX or Ultima VIII now? Because Ultima IX is a Windows game and could never run under DosBox (doesn't need that too).

eric10051981 30-06-2004 05:15 AM

i want serpent isle.. i miss serpent isle.. :(

the differences between the 7th series and pagan are just too much.. can't say i enjoyed playing pagan but still..

Durak 30-06-2004 05:27 PM

It runs REALLY slowly for me. The dialog is choppy and it takes a very long time to load the startup. I'm using DoSBox, anyone know how to fix this? It would be GREATLY appreciated.

Tom Henrik 30-06-2004 05:31 PM

The only solution I can think of, right now is to try and increase the speed in DOSbox....

Ctrl + F11 (decrease speed)
Ctrl + F12 (increase speed)

Durak 30-06-2004 05:58 PM

That didn't work, it was more choppy than slow. Although it was REALLY slow...

FreeFreddy 30-06-2004 06:49 PM

If you make cpu cycles higher than your PC can handle the simulation will be even slower than before.
Therefore I would suggest that you get a new PC now. :)

Durak 30-06-2004 08:58 PM

It was slow on my old computer, but I bought a new one recently therefore it should run fine...

Durak 01-07-2004 03:13 PM

I'm getting a new computer shortly, so I'll try it on that one...must...play...Pagan - Ultima 8 again...

Anonymous 07-07-2004 01:33 AM

it dosen't work with dosbox. couls someone help?

eric10051981 07-07-2004 02:22 AM

it worked with dosbox.. my computer spec is AMD-2600 with 512 DDRam and with 15000 cpu cycle it still got choppy though, and if i tried to get more than that it'll go even sluggish..

very very annoying i tell ya.. :?

FreeFreddy 07-07-2004 05:34 AM

Hmm, my PC is P4 2.4 Ghz and I only use 11500 cycles, the game is fast enough then... :? Perhaps 15000 is already too much for your CPU and it becomes sluggish?

eric10051981 07-07-2004 05:46 AM

well, i remember using 13500 cycles and it is choppy.. maybe you're right.. i'll try it right away.. thx :D

btw, nice avatar.. :)

FreeFreddy 07-07-2004 05:48 AM

Thx :D

Anonymous 07-07-2004 10:27 PM

I tried to install it in ms-dos ( Win 98 ) But it keeps asking for disk1. So i tried burning it to disk, but i still get the same message. Even when i just try to run u8.exe without installing in dos, it comes up with "Abnormal Exception" without starting up. Any suggestions?

FreeFreddy 08-07-2004 09:15 AM

Asking for disk1???... :? You don't need to quit Windows 98 and start in Ms-Dos mode to play the game, just run the game with the Dos-prompt linkage in your startmenu.
Anyway, if this doesn't help, try to play the game with DosBox, which you can get on this site, the game should run without problems there. Btw, you better use DosBox in Windows XP, not 98, because Windows XP is faster for Windows programs than Windows 98.

Niccin 09-08-2004 11:37 PM

I know that Pagen was one of the last hand drawn games made, for it's time. It was also one of the most detailed hand drawen games ever. With the most fps. for a hand drawen game. I'm not sure if that has changed after 1994. Anyway I thought someone should mention it, after the enourmous amount of man hour's that went into it.

Durak 10-08-2004 12:23 AM

And I must say it is a wonderful game indeed...except it also runs choppy with DosBox for me...

eric10051981 10-08-2004 02:50 AM

found a rather shocking fact!!

dosbox actually works better with windows 2000 coz when i played pagan, it doesn't get choppy.. i repeat, it DOESN'T get choppy.. same with other games..

hope this helps.. :)

FreeFreddy 10-08-2004 07:52 AM

Well, under Windows XP on my PC it isn't choppy at all... :?

eric10051981 10-08-2004 07:55 AM

meaning.. something wrong with my xp? :?

FreeFreddy 10-08-2004 07:56 AM

Either XP or with your PC's configuration... But perhaps it's just little slower PC also...

eric10051981 10-08-2004 07:59 AM

oh well.. i can always switch to win 2k to play some old games.. plus, i also use it to work.. just some kind of a win-win solution.. :)

Durak 10-08-2004 01:05 PM

My comp is almost the same as eric and I have the same problem...

I guess I'll have to abandon Ultima 8 - Pagan. On a side note it doesn't work on my 98 computer either probably because it's pretty darn old.

eric10051981 11-08-2004 02:35 AM

durak, maybe you want to try installing win 2k? :P just for the sake of playing pagan..

Durak 11-08-2004 02:42 AM

If I hadn't already played it before in dos, I'd die.

2k? Nah. I'll settle with my memories and continue to play Dizzy for the sake of flipping.

eric10051981 11-08-2004 02:58 AM

i think i played pagan once when i still used.. well, either 98 SE or ME.. and it worked nicely though..

Omuletzu 11-08-2004 01:41 PM

Quote:

That cannot be the case... after all the game is made in 1994!
So unless you are running the game on a 60 Mhz machine, the game will work

FreeFreddy 11-08-2004 05:40 PM

On 486DX2 with 66 Mhz the game still runs with flawless speed.

Durak 12-08-2004 12:20 AM

Hrm. Guess I'd better try it again.

Guest 18-09-2004 10:18 PM

I cant install this game on dos box

it keeps on saying:

halting:internal error
where:installing.c -761
reason sound/a16sbfm.dll

help plzz

FreeFreddy 19-09-2004 07:59 AM

What do you mean with "I cant install the game on DosBox"? You cannot set the sound in the install.exe or you try to "install" the game somehow somewhere?

EbilPhish 10-10-2004 09:08 AM

You can try an alternative client here - http://pentagram.sourceforge.net/
Kinda like Exult for Ultima 7.

gdp2000 10-10-2004 11:44 AM

Yes pentagram is good. It is from the same people as exult, but is still alpha as you can see in this cvs changelog snippet:
</div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td>QUOTE ("Pentagram CVS")</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'>
2004-10-08* Matthew Jimenez <mjimenez@users.sourceforge.net>
* world/actors/AnimationTracker.*: targeted jump do not affect z.
* Avatar should not be able to jump higher, and gravity + inertia
* should take care of falling.

2004-10-08* Willem Jan Palenstijn <wjpalenstijn@users.sourceforge.net>
* games/U8Game.cpp: put avatar in stasis at the beginning

2004-10-08* Willem Jan Palenstijn <wjpalenstijn@users.sourceforge.net>
* gumps/PaperdollGump.cpp, gumps/SliderGump.cpp: use FontManager

2004-10-07* Matthew Jimenez <mjimenez@users.sourceforge.net>
* kernel/GUIApp.cpp: clean up the textmodes input handling for possible

[/b][/quote]

When you emulate is in dosbox you should try the latest patch, which you can still find on ea's ftp. The patch repairs many plot bugs and finally the avatar jumps where you want him to jump. Makes ultima 8 a less jump & run.

One of the best games of all time...

Morrin 19-11-2004 06:16 AM

Experiment with CTRL-F11, CTRL-F12 and CTRL-F7 and CTRL-F8. I have up to date computer and it was hell of a choppy. It works averagely now.

Colthurn 25-11-2004 04:14 PM

Great site, I discovered it two days ago and I am in Heaven!

I downloaded Ultima 8 to play in my Win98SE PC and I am having some trouble. I am using your system disk utility to start up the PC, but when I load U8 the system freezes.

Any ideas? :help:

FreeFreddy 25-11-2004 04:17 PM

This question belongs rather to Troubleshooting. ;)
Anyway, did you try to play the game in DosBox? You can get it also from this site under Programs.

Tom Henrik 25-11-2004 04:29 PM

Actully it belongs here as well, Freddy ;)

Colthurn 25-11-2004 04:50 PM

I thought DOSBox was only good for WinXP. I'll give it a shot.

Thanks.

Duterasemis 26-11-2004 07:15 AM

I can't get the damn thing to install at all. I've tried extracting the whole thing and running INSTALL.EXE under both Dos Box and VDM sound. Neither one was able to install the game. I kept getting the message "Halted: Internal Error!" no matter what I did. How do I install this damn game?

Guest 26-11-2004 07:18 AM

It appears that somebody else was having the exact same problem I am right now. I have no idea what the error message means, nor do I know how it might be fixed. I looked at that Pentagram site but it was of no help. Any ideas?

Tried DOSbox in my Win98SE system. 750Mhz, 128MB RAM. Pagan runs, but way too slowly. Processor usage goes up the roof, so I can't increase cycle rates for positive results. Open to more suggestions...

gdp2000 26-11-2004 05:39 PM

People expiriencing problems with U8 should wait some time for a better release of Pentagram. I think in a few weeks it will be playable.

750 Mhz are way too little for DosBox. Actually at least Pentium 3 with 1 Ghz is needed for it, with 2 Ggz the emulation of Dosbox would reach acceptable speed then. More - better.

Guest 26-11-2004 07:48 PM

For all of you who have been frustrated with trying to run Ultima 8 with DOSbox, I have some news

A very good man has come up a way of playing U8 (and both parts of U7 too) in windows.

you can find this all at Ron Windemeyer's Webpage

I haven't played this game, but usually when old games refer to lack of memory they mean conventional DOS memory or ems. What OS are you using? Win 98? Win XP?

Help me 28-11-2004 12:07 PM

I have win xp. But I cant install the game either :(

FreeFreddy 28-11-2004 12:37 PM

You don't need to install it, it's in the installed state already. Just move it to some folder and start the game. And you should play it under DosBox, under Windows XP it won't run at all.

Help me 28-11-2004 01:17 PM

I have tryed to make DosBox it starts and all and I have mounted it and it is Z patrition??? How do I strt the game in it?

TaloN 28-11-2004 01:22 PM

so youve typed mount c **********

*** being the drive the games on and folders etc?

then type

c:

then run , go, menu etc. whatever runs the game

type dir/p to see all the files in the folder you mounted.

KP 07-01-2005 12:50 PM

Hello,
I have a question: I am able to run Ultima 8 with dosbox and d-fend on my system (after a lot of changing settings) but for some reason when I walk into the town some walls of the houses are black instead of normally textured and also most houses are almost completely empty inside (no tables, books etc). I also think not all characters are in the game. (Also almost no enemies) Explosions from fire mushrooms look black also.
Does anybody know what my problem is?
Some kind of wrong setting in dosbox/d-fend?
Maybe someone can give the settings he uses.
Btw I use the version of ultima 8 that i downloaded from this site so I think I have all the data of the game.

MasterGrazzt 07-01-2005 01:25 PM

Don't bother. Ultima 8 smells.

KP 10-01-2005 04:17 PM

Ok, I have tested Pentagram now and this seems to solve the problem of dissappeared objects. Only now I don't have sound only midi music :-(

Guest 13-01-2005 01:20 AM

I'm having this problem using Pentagram. First of all, DosBox didn't work for me cuz it was just so slow... even if I gave it more processor... So, I tried pentagram but I have two basic problems: There is no sound, altough there is music... and I don't want to see the pentagram console above the game... I just want to play it like old times :P Any help?

Anyways, try to download without a download manager.

gildedgirth 02-02-2005 03:43 PM

Just want to throw in my 2 cents about this game. At the time, Ultima 8 created quite a stir in the Ultima fan-base because it differed so much from its predecessors in terms of game mechanics because it was more action-oriented, contained a smaller world and only allowed a single control character as opposed to a party.

It didn't help that when it was released there were numerous bugs and also some very annoying mario-like jumping sections, which were addressed by a stream of patches. However, Richard Garriot, I think more than a year later surprised everyone by releasing a huge patch that addressed the remaining bugs, elimated some of the tedious jumping sections, added lots of new content and wrote a nicely stated "thank you" message to Ultima fans and acknowledged past issues and gripes with the game and hoped this would help them to enjoy the game as it meant to be.

I was very impressed that Garriot did this, when the games sales were already cold from being out more than a year and no one expected any further enhancements for the game. It might have been a year and half later, I forget exactly. But the patch so significantly improved the game experience that I really think Ultima 8 didn't get it's due credit. It's one of my favorite RPG's (and yes I've played the Ultima series from 1- 8 starting with my original Apple 5 1/2 inch floppy disks on my Apple IIe computer). Playing Ultima 8, I remember "oohing and aahing" during the summon animations for my elementals. The hand drawn 2d graphics and were amazing at the time (and I'm sure they still are). I loved the game so much I later bought another copy just incase my original somehow got corrupted.

While definitely the U6 to U7 games with expansions do offer a longer, bigger and more epic and satisfying experience overall, Ultima 8, if taken for what it is, is definitely a world class game and one that I'm sad that no expansion game was made (although it was planned but ditched due to the public outcry of U8 at the time, less than expected sales). What a shame. This game also showed how much Garriot really appreciated his fans that he'd work long hours to improve the game and help reconnect to his fanbase.

update: you know on second thought...I think his patch was actually released more than 2 years past the original game release. I remember thinking how surprised everyone was that there was a new patch. Anyone remember exactly?

Retarded Fly 08-02-2005 06:37 AM

but no sound. i got music. but no sound.
and what are the controls?

Sleepy Emp 09-03-2005 11:02 AM

Ok, some advice:

To install the game if the installer fails in WinXP try using DosBox. Mount your root directory as drive F for example and start the installer. Change the destination path so that it would start with F:\ (to something like F:\Ultima8) and do not forget to set up the sound.

Running the game is a different matter. If you use DosBox, you will get full sound but the game speed will depend on the speed of your CPU. You may use the boot disk (load the computer in DOS mode and start the game as you would 6 years ago). This will require setting up the correct DOS drivers for your sound card and working a bit more with the game installer. Or you could use the program called U8Win9x, which patches the game and lets you play directly under Win9x, WinME and WinXP. Note that in this case you will need to set up the VDMSound utility as well. I myself couldn’t get it to work correctly(maybe simply because the installer got corrupt finally :) ) All I could squeeze out of it was the music, but the sound effects would not play.

Hope that helps!

Rebecca 21-03-2005 02:31 AM

Tried DosBox first, but things were too choppy for me to handle. [And WHY does such an old game need SO much memory?! Bah!]

So now I'd like to try Pentagram.

I've downloaded all the stuff I need, but I do not understand the directions for setting it up. I need some Pentagram 101. Explicit directions. No, not that kind of explicit.

Can anyone help? Is there a site out there that already does what I'm looking for?

Rebecca
redhotkitchen at earthlink.net

Mad-E-Fact 21-03-2005 12:25 PM

How about reading the FAQ on the Pentagram homepage for starters? Pentagram isn't complete anyway, so you're still stuck with using DosBox. Try increasing the CPU cycles to speed the game up, and read the Guide on this forum. ;)

KamisamaVX 07-04-2005 10:55 PM

To the guy needing help running this game in DOSBOX.

Ok, This might help you out a bit. I'm another person having trouble with this game. After hours of messing around with the settings, these seem to work the best for me on my 1.2 ghz machine.

CPU=Simple
Dos memory=16 MB
Render Method=Surface
Resolution=320x200
Scale=none
Frameskip=3
cycles=8000 <----- YES, 8000. This is all the game really needs. This will save your computer precious CPU power to use helping to emulate other things. Like sound.
Sample rate=11025
Turn off all sound emulation except soundblaster.
Turn off joystick support.
XMS=on
EMS=off

Granted, unless you have 2gh plus this won't get the game running anything close to smooth, but the game IS playable like this.

dwarfo 08-04-2005 08:04 AM

Nice game. Very nice, but the ultima online 2D is also very nice game. :Titan:

Mad-E-Fact 09-04-2005 10:21 AM

You can find all the Ultimas that are not (yet) on Abandonia here:

It's a French site, but most of the games are in English anyway.

I'm not aware of an emulation program for U5 that would actually work, but you can run it in DosBox, if that helps.

To the guy needing help running this game in DOSBOX.

Ok, This might help you out a bit. I'm another person having trouble with this game. After hours of messing around with the settings, these seem to work the best for me on my 1.2 ghz machine.

CPU=Simple
Dos memory=16 MB
Render Method=Surface
Resolution=320x200
Scale=none
Frameskip=3
cycles=8000 <----- YES, 8000. This is all the game really needs. This will save your computer precious CPU power to use helping to emulate other things. Like sound.
Sample rate=11025
Turn off all sound emulation except soundblaster.
Turn off joystick support.
XMS=on
EMS=off

Granted, unless you have 2gh plus this won't get the game running anything close to smooth, but the game IS playable like this.

Thankyou! After years of waiting, i can finally play it again!

Roan 15-04-2005 01:34 AM

Th emusic doesnt work for me. i mean the sound works and even when i turn music on it doesnt work :ranting:

The Boing 15-04-2005 01:46 PM

Set the music options to general midi, like Roland SC or Roland RAP-10 then it should work when in Dosbox

Hey, I own ultima 8 and it installs fine and starts up fine following the installation. But when i try to run it again after i quit out of it, it says it is suffering from an incomplete installation, and i can't play it. I don't feel like having to reinstall the game every time i want to load it up.
I tried downloading the french version hoping it would be in english, but it's not (i am currently studying french, but i aint that great at it).
any suggestions as to how to fix this "incomplete installation" problem? :wall:

Gamefreak 06-06-2005 06:44 AM

Yes, when you install the game under Windows or DosBox, it breaks up in the middle of uncompressing the shapes file. The only thing that could help there is to install the game in pure Dos and only after that play it in DosBox. :)

lajotero 11-06-2005 10:39 PM

A. J. Raffles 11-06-2005 10:42 PM

You can't download the game because it's ESA-protected.

siv9939 18-07-2005 12:54 AM

I got this game in a Ultima collection thing several years ago and I didn't realy like it that much. Its just that in all of the previous Ultima games you had a party with you and it was kind of disapointing not having that.

Ebay sells it now and then - look for the Ultima Collection, it's worth buying.

My dream would have come to reality if the expansion for Ultima 8 would ever has been released. But there isn't even any fan-work for that... *sigh*

Setting frame skip to 3 will help improve speed.

This is the first RPG/Adventure game I'd ever played back then, and I simply LOVED it. I'd played it so much that the entire map of Pagan, with even the little details, was memorized in my brain. I don't understand why some people don't like it as much as the previous Ultima games, it also deserves praise.

Exactly my words. This game is in quite some elements new and superior to the previous series. The dark mood created by music, the good animations for spells and combat, the grand story and the mysterious and interesting world this game was simply beautiful. I also remember all the locations of Pagan completely. :D

If my character is in a battle with characters that can cast any number of spells, shifting instantly, at a moment's notice, but I can't do that--having to root through a backpack in realtime--then something is wrong. And if I have to jump from stone to stone to cross a river, and whatever level of character I have, if I click accidentally with a mouse in the wrong place my character drowns--I've got better things to do, and other games to play.

ROFL! Even luckier for me, tbere are many people who understand that when feature-level aspects of a game are asinine, the answer isn't to tell folks, "Go play your saved game again and again from that point until you agree to like the feature."

Weta 09-09-2005 04:29 PM

I know this game isn't downloadable here, but I thought I'd just help out all those people with the .c error in their installs.

The reason this happens is because the simulated DOS environment you've created with DOSbox is incorrectly structured. Presumably to load the disk you have mounted D: as D:, but now you are telling the program to write to your C: drive, which DOSbox has never heard of. To get around this, mount both disks, using a frontend if this is all a bit confusing (I recommend D-Fend).

Once you have both C: and D: mounted (as literally themselves), voila.

Swarog 14-09-2005 06:11 PM

I actually own the game, have the original box with pentagram coin and map, but on diskettes!! All 8 are accounted for but nr. 7 seems to have some glitch so it doesn't install... :( I loved it.

Maximize the DosBox to full screen with ALT+Enter, and increase the speed of DosBox emulation, thus the speed of the game, with CTRL+F12 (decrease with CTRL+F11). ;)
And don't play it in Windows XP, complete waste of time. :max:

hey i have pagan on CD and i ahve DOS box and can install te game fine but when i try to run it, it says program halted by code, does anyone know how to fix it?

thanks

Gamefreak 18-09-2005 07:15 AM

When you install the game from CD, it has to decompress the shapes-file at the first start, and if the decompression isn't finished because freezed, as it is the case in DosBox, then the game isn't playable anymore - file damaged, and you need to install it again.
And if you start the game first time in Windows XP or Windows 98, the game won't even start there, so there is a dilemma.
You would need a boot-disc with pure DOS to start the game first time and let it decompress the shapes-file completely, but be sure to set the sound and music as "none" in the setup before running it, as the game starts afterwards and in boot disc there are no drivers for soundcard unless you add some yourself. And you need to let the game start after unpacking to complete the it. After that you can quit the game via ALT+X and run the game without problems in DosBox from now on.

Meganekko 27-09-2005 12:22 AM

HOW CAN I DOWNLOAD THE GAME!?!

I want to get the Ultima 7 & 8 on this site, but there is no link in the page to download the file!

When I went to that page, it says uploaded by Freddy, but where can I download it? There's no link, no button, nothing~!

Do I need to register to the site? Log-in to make a "download button" appear? Or is it written in a font too small for the naked eye?

Blood-Pigggy 27-09-2005 12:26 AM

Okay, I won't insult your intelligence, but the ESA No-Go! Button speaks for itself.
If you don't know what the ESA is, then you should at least understand No-Go!
You won't find a chance of downloading it here, or receiving a link.

Feel free to browse through the other games (There are tons of them, many of them are great) and download the ones that aren't ESA protected.

Gamefreak 27-09-2005 04:12 PM

Or try other sites that have these games for download unlike this one. ;)

Sebatianos 27-09-2005 04:36 PM

But be careful - there are sites there that are offering it - but shouldn't!

Limecat is not Pleased 30-09-2005 04:09 AM

Well, I have a different problem from any listed so far. I've been playing the game for about two days now. I am running it in DosBox, speed is good, no problems getting it to run. I'm enjoying it quite a bit--even the jumping isn't all that bad.

However, I have just hit the second spot in which the game completely locks up. The first time was in the Palace Dungeon as soon as I read Bendic's diary, which was in the evidence room. Restored, played around with DosBox, did some different things in the game, went back and BAM! Same thing. Looking at a walkthrough, apparently I am supposed to be arrested here by three guards, so I think that it's locking on an animation .

Temporary fix was to not read the diary and play around that plot line. Unfortunately, it's just happened again when I finally meet Lithos in the Hall of the Mountain King. This is especially irritating because, if you've played the game, you know that if you miss the side passages and go straight through, you get teleported back to the beginning and have to go through the caves (and the jumping bits) all over again.

I missed the side passages. This is a bad thing. :ranting: :ranting: :ranting:

So after hours in the caves, I finally run panting through a gauntlet of ghouls and skeletons. Lithos appears, I made it, I'm happy--and the game locks up. I'm thinking another animation is the trigger.

I doubt anyone can help. If you have a suggestion, I'd love to hear it. At least I got it running and had some fun with it. I don't know if anyone here has played far enough through recently to know if this is a common problem.

Wow, this is a long post. Well, if it helps anyone else--do not, and I mean do not, step on the giant rune stone in the caverns until you have found Lithos. Limecat was fit to be tied.

Oh, one more thing.

Everyone having problems with the speed, don't use the CTRL-F8/F12. It just makes it choppy. Instead, try using the DosBox Config. Change the line reading cycles=(number) to at least 10000 or 11000. I have it on 13000. Then Save and Run.

I also think the game has a memory leak so if it begins to lag, exit and restart.

??? :eeeeeh: ???

the dosbox.conf file?

I'm an idiot, I know...

Limecat is not Pleased 30-09-2005 02:48 PM

If you're using DosBox 0.63, it should be in your program bar so Start-Programs-DosBox-0.63-DosBox.conf. The config file will open in Notepad. If it isn't on your bar, then look for dosbox.conf in your DosBox folder and open it with Notepad. As always, make a backup of the original before editing it.

Another thing I changed was to run it fullscreen. Just change the fullscreen=false attribute to true.

I figured out my problem with the locking up. It has something to do with the speech pack. So right before I hit the problem spots, I turn everything off in the Options (just to be safe). No music, no sound effects=no problems. Once I've gotten past the point and saved, I turn them back on again.

Limecat is very happy. LOL

So if I decide to show up at your front door with a baseball bat and start smashing your knee caps into dust and I'm convinced that's not illegal, the police can't touch me? Cool - I'm feeling rather violent at the moment.

Look, like you said. As long as there are sources, there will be people using them - but we won't be a part of it, so one more post like that one!

Gamefreak 01-10-2005 01:50 PM

Feeling defensive because you're helpless against software piracy? I didn't post any link here, so no need for "baseball bat", eventhough you're free to appear before my door and see what you'll archieve. And my point is my point, it's my right to speak it off. Discussion better over here.

I guess I just have to face it.. A pentium II just isn't enough to play U8 via DosBox...

Blood-Pigggy 02-10-2005 04:04 AM

Definetly not.
What OS are you using? It's most likely that if it's something older you could run it off of the system normally. If you haven't tried it already.

Limecat is not Pleased 02-10-2005 02:51 PM

Swarog, it should run on a Pentium II as long as you have at least 64 MB of Ram. According to the guy that wrote the program to run it in Windows:

"Disclaimer: Despite extremely encouraging testing results, it cannot be guaranteed that this program will work for all users and in all hardware configurations. So far it works well in Windows 95, 98, ME and Windows 2000/XP. It has worked with processor speeds from 166 to 800, and RAM from 64 to 768 Mb."

Have you tried his program? If not, give it a shot. The only problem with it is that it is a b****h to get a modern soundcard working in it, but you might not have that problem.

You can download it from:

Swarog 02-10-2005 05:16 PM

Thanks guys, I'll look into this one last time once I get home from the shops.

I'm running XP on a Pentium II, and with dosbox I got the game and sound working, but if I get the sound to stream fluently the game is veeeeeeery slow and choppy, and even at best the game runs too slow to play without losing interest before even reaching the docks in the beginnng. RAM shouldn't be a problem, I have 128Mb.

Yes, but to the left is a link to the same program for Ultima 8, so it was only off by a page. THANKS Limecat!

Okay now, here we go.

Thanks to this nifty program I can get U8 to work straight from XP, the speed is good and all is well in the Land of Nod. Almost.

To get the sound to work I had to download VDMSound v. 2.1.0. BUT all I get is either a garbled mish-mash of digital squeaks(when sound and music is set to use SoundBlaster). I can get music by using setting it to use MIDI (in U8's install) and can live with that, but would also like sound effects.. I set the music to still use MIDI but tried setting the effects to use SoundBlaster, this resulted in the game crashing in the intro when the first digital sounds are to begin(The Guardian's hand is about to appear). I'm now going to play around with this some more and see if I can get it to work in some way, tho.

Guest 02-10-2005 06:57 PM

"(Personal note: for reasons quoted above, digital sound will not seem to work in U8. I can get it to run tolerably well if I specify "no sound card" - you get text on screen - and Sound Blaster or General Midi for music.)

This is from Ron Windeyer's page that Limecat so kindly directed us to. So it seems we can get music but no digital sound effects. Bummer, but at least I can now play the game!! YES!!!

Thanks again Limecat, I can now vanish into the world of Pagan for the forseeable future! :ok:

Limecat is not Pleased 02-10-2005 09:26 PM

Yay! I don't know why, but the U8 page has the same URL as the U7 page. I noticed that after I posted, but I knew you guys were smart enough to figure it out. Well, most of you. :D

As an FIY, I couldn't get the sound effects working for more than a second or two in DoxBox either, and if you see my above post, having sound effects checked iin the Options locked up the game for me in some key spots. From what I heard, they don't add hugely to the game so I was happy enough without them, but I know what it's like to have to get EVERYTHING working or it just isn't right.

Glad you got it working. Hours of gooey, gaming goodness.

One more thing. Make sure that if you don't have the patched version that you install the patch before playing. The patch deletes all your save games. You can tell if you have the patched version if you find a key ring in the barrels next to the docks.

Yup, that's the version I have :D Seems I have to run the game without music as well, as the game crashes suddenly and without warning or error message if I have even MIDI music on. Oh well, luckily I have a good CD collection :)

BTW: Just got blown up by Beren for trying to steal his obsidian coins :D

Limecat is not Pleased 02-10-2005 11:33 PM

Yes, Beren will teleport in and blow you up if you steal from anyone in town and get caught. The blacksmith ratted me out when I tried to steal a scimitar and BOOM! Pieces of avatar everywhere.

I'm having a problem with the video now. It didn't start until fairly late in the game and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be part of the game because you have to sacrifice your sight after you become a theurgist (Nice, huh?) The screen periodically flashes and the colors turn gray. When someone gets around the point where you go to Daemon's Crag, can you post and let me know if you are getting this as well? I think it has to be a bug because it's so bad that it gives me a headache. Thanks.

Guest 02-10-2005 11:36 PM

I almost finished U8 back in the nineties, (got stuck in Demon's crag with the pentacle spells..) and I sure can't remember that... sounds like a bug to me, but I can't be 100% certain.

you know... it was my first rpg :D

Alcoolocaust 19-10-2005 08:42 PM

Arduinna 14-11-2005 01:43 AM

I love this game. I never got very far when I first played it years and years ago. I believe our old computer crashed while I was searching out the necromancers.

Then I managed to get it working on our win98 machine, only thing was, it would lock up when Lothian was being killed, and the screen shook, etc etc. Never could get past there.

Now I have a very nice machine, and the game works grand with dosbox, only problem is that its still locking up at the same place. :(

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Gamefreak 14-11-2005 04:31 AM

Do you play an own version of you? Download the patch for Ultima 8 from Origin/EA from this site: Phyton.dk
Maybe then the game will be able to proceed at the point with Lothian. You'll need to start the game anew after the patch, though.

JimDandy 18-11-2005 08:35 PM

I've been playing in DosBox. Seems to work good at around 10000 cpu cycles. At less cycles, obviously it runs slower. What's odd is that at higher cycles, it also slows down. Probably not enough resources on my machine to go any higher. I just tweak the cycles until the music/sound effects don't stutter.
** Little spoiler if you haven't played the Ultimas **
Ahhh but I have to mention one thing! In the review, you state:
"Avatar is the character you have been playing since Ultima I."
Shame on you! Avatar is the character you have been playing since the end of Ultima IV! In Ultima I-IV, he was called The Stranger, and only at the very end of Ultima IV did he become the Avatar! I'm shocked! LOL

I've got a question I haven't seen covered here yet...

I'm using Dosbox to try to get U8 running, and it's all fine and well until I actually try to play the game. When I try to run U8, I get this error message, "this game cannot be run in DOS mode."

?

I'm running Dosbox on OSX and have piles of everything I should have piles of... any thoughts?

inotoni 29-11-2005 04:16 AM

U8 was a disappointment compared to U7s. I actually finished the game back then without patch! U know.. with the crazy jumping. Looking forward to when Pentagram finishes.

I don't think most of us have experience running U8 under Mac. :bye:

can somebody plz tell me WHY i cant download this thing??!

Gamefreak 04-12-2005 10:12 AM

Because ESA demanded this site to remove the game for download. They want to keep the copyrights on this game themselves.

hey! I managed to make it run without problem on OSX 10.3... and quite smooth too (Considering that I only have a G3)... :/

maybe you have the wrong version.

now it would be nice to know how to move the character

JimmyJ 11-12-2005 06:45 PM

You move with the mouse! Yes, i know, the moveing controls are horrible!

Guest 15-12-2005 01:38 AM

I got U8 on my first PC, on 1994. It was a red CD with Ultima8, Syndicate Plus, Strike Commander and Wing Commander II. But I was too young, and never made many things on the game. but, last year, I've download the game and a patch to run U8 on WinXP (it wasn't DosBox). I've play the game without sound and very slow (the patch wasn't so good), but I finish the game! After 10 years! It's a great game! I recommendo for everyone.

Guest 15-12-2005 01:39 AM

PS.: someone have the "Lengendary" red Cd with U8, Sundicate Plus, Strike Commander and Wing Commander II? I have this since 1994, and the manual too!

Gamefreak 15-12-2005 08:23 AM

Well, I have the legendary CD of Ultima 8 only, in a orange flamepainted package with the pentagram and the gamename written above, and the CD is half-red, half-black, with Pyros coming out of his lava circle on the red side. It doesn't contain a patch, is the original version with the arcade jumping.

fictionz 16-12-2005 02:06 AM

i downloaded it but couldn't play it, a 16-bit ms-dos app error it says, wonderin if it's coz i'm using XP but.... can anyone help?

Gamefreak 16-12-2005 10:45 AM

Of course playing Ultima 8 in Windows XP is the worst thing possible. This game is buggy enough already, and trying to play it in any Windows version will make it crash before starting. Play it in DosBox instead, you can get to it's download site through a link on this site, at the Programs section. Don't forget to increase the CPU cycles in DosBox (CTRL-F12 or edit dosbox.conf) to at least 8000 when playing the game, otherwise it will be little too slow.

red_avatar 19-12-2005 06:54 AM

I got this game from a friend back in 1994 and loved it but it was really daunting in size and options. I was just starting to learn English back then, and a lot of the books I could only half read, which had a serious impact on the background of the story. Not to mention that I never actually got out of the city because it was so big :P

I really need to replay this - tested all Ultima games on DOSBOX yesterday (succesfully except for Akalabeth which won't work) so that's a good thing :). I still need to play Ultima IX - vastly underrated, even if it's buggy in places.

Gamefreak 19-12-2005 11:36 AM

I played Ultima 9. To be honest, I liked the previous Ultima parts more, especially Ultima 6. They made more fun than Ultima IX.

Mythran 19-12-2005 12:31 PM

So.. I think that I do not need to say a word from this game, isn't???
My all time coolest game in all the universe... surely!!!

I also 'learn' how to speak, understand and even pronounce english on this one...
I'm thinking on play this game on the other languages to be an expert on other languages
:D

But this game is so perfect... the interactivity, the fun, the story, all!!!!!!!!!!! :Brain:

The UO and the Ultima VII are also great games... but The VIII Pagan is no match!! Also... the IX Ascension it's a cool game... but don't even close with the UO, VII, and of course, The VIII Pagan!!!!
:D

Try Ebay

Zirocrath 16-01-2006 03:06 AM

I don't get it. I checked ESA members list... ORIGIN Systems Inc. is not part of them anymore... why would you still keep protecting the game?

Yeah I have that one! Ultima 8 is pretty much the only good game on that though, except sydicate which is kind of cool.

origin systems inc is a division of ea games

Gamefreak 06-02-2006 10:44 AM

Or better said, bought back then by Electronic Arts which is called EA Games now.

hi im new to this site...
when i'm trying to download u8 it says

This game is under protection of ESA (entertainment software association) and it CAN NOT BE DOWNLOADED! We also can't provide you with information on where or how to get it.

You can find more about The ESA here. If you ended up here you probably requested a game from one of the game production companies that are members of The ESA.

You can find the list of ESA members here and get in touch with the company who's game you would like to obtain.

Any further inquiries regarding this matter can be directed here.

how can i download it????

Simple, you can't! ESA protected means the copyright is still held and protected by a company called the ESA to make sure the game can't be freely distributed. Sorry, and welcome to the site! :bye:

have you noticed this part at all?
WE CANNOT PROVIDE YOU WITH INFORMATION WHERE / HOW TO OBTAIN IT ILLEGALLY!!!

guesst 24-05-2006 07:52 PM

I guess that ESA NoGo button isn't clear enough. Maybe it should be changed to say:

The ESA does not allow download of this program. To comply with law this site has removed the download link for all ESA protected programs. You can not download this program here or anywhere on this site, nor can we help you find a copy of this program for download. Please do not spam our message boards with requests for where to find ESA protected software. You may want to try eBay and see if anyone's selling. Other than that, please we can't help. Sorry. If you persist in buggin us about it our admins may excercise the right to ban your IP. NO ABANDONIA FOR YOU

Now we just need to fit that into the same size as the download button.

The Fifth Horseman 26-05-2006 03:21 PM

I think that "ESA protected. Do not ask how/where to download it." would suffice.

Ok, I am supremely glad to announce that using Ron Windeyer's patch, I've got U8 up and running. However, the whole thing feels like it is in slow motion. Is there anyway to speed up the game's frame rate? Also, im using a IBM thinkpad R40, with an integrated sound/music card. Any idea how to set this up properly in the game so I can hear fx and music? Thanks!

Pagan Guru 22-06-2006 02:35 PM

I have start to play that game in 1994 with a 386 at 40MHz, with a VGA card of 2MB and PC memory at 8MB.
To day, i still to play that game.

Believe me, until to day, there is not an equal game like Pagan.
The magic, is magic, if you want magic & power, you have to enter in to the mystery of mysticycm.
Have you seen other games?
The magic is like candys from super market.

Just live in the world of Pagan, let your minds travel under the mystery cape of that game.

When you do your first spell, you will undrstund, why the games of today are not good.

If you are good players, i will tell you how to kill the Titans permanently.

The speech speed depends from the option of speech speed.

The game speed depends from CPU, i have a Pentium I MMX 266MHz, the game runs so fast...i must to fix the runing speed option becose the Avatar falls in to the watter all the time.

I first played this game when it originally came out in '94, and I'm ashamed to admit that it ran too slowly on my computer so I payed out money I couldn't afford to upgrade it 'sigh'. Superficially it looks better than the previous Ultima's, and I think this is what sucked me in, but ULTIMAtely (forgive the pun) IMO it is inferior to the previous ones in the series with it's emphasis on jumping etc. Sadly a foretaste of what was to come, which resulted with the series ending in a whimper rather than a bang with Ultima XI Ascension (although I personally have not played the last one). Looking back, a magnificent series which is only marred slightly by the last two.

Yesterday, i have post a message, now i have just finished the U8 for one more time.
The game the i have download yesterday have some...changes.

*The music is not the original music, they are remix files, but they are also good.

*In the mountain King's pass, the platforms does not move, this makes the game easyer.

*Avatar denides to jump some times, this also makes the game easyer becose if your action is incorect the Avatar stays still and you will not jump in to the watter.

*The entranse to the Moriens (Zealans) has 2 bugs, 1.The sighn inside stands to the air, 2. in the upper corner you will see glowing ligths, in this plase must exist an invisible chest, you must cast the "reveal" spell to see the chest, but reveal dosent do anything.

*The recall item works in the Daemons Crag, in the old version you have to go out to the catacombs, the recal item does not worked nowere in Daemons Crag.

*The pyramid black rock fragment, does not charge easy, you must droop it to the ground and then double click in to the Avatar, then you must to move it to unstuck it before you finish the game.

Scatty 24-06-2006 06:45 AM

That's because this is a version with a patch from Richard Garriott applied. I think though it would be much better if they ever brought out the addon for Ultima 8 that they intended previously, than this patch. The game was playable enough without it, but is admittedly better with it anyway.
As of Ultima 9, I played it and I'm disappointed. The previous Ultima parts are all better than it, the last part just doesn't have the feeling of the great Ultima world like in previous games in it, and it was close to boring. And the combats in Ultima IX are pitiable, there's Gothic very much better.

It would be very nice if The Lost Vale actually came out. Only some images were published, and if you want I can post them. According to the manual, the Lost Vale was where Lithos imprisoned some Zealans and I think it was the destination you were supposed to get at the end, instead of Britannia.

I've played Ultima IX, and had enough patience to finish it, with a kinda nice ending. I hate EA, all was her fault, The Lost Vale and Ultima IX failure was caused by ignorants. If you want too, I can post the original plot to Ultima IX.

Guest_Ian_* 14-07-2006 06:35 PM

I think it's impossible to finish this game. After talking to Xavier about the first test in which you should read the books at the monastery but all I get are books on Theurgy magic. Those books Xavier talks about is not there. Looks like there's a problem with this patch. Anyone had the same problem??

Scatty 14-07-2006 10:27 PM

There's no problem with this patch. The books are always there, and you have to think twice before you find hints for the test in them, maybe you just overlooked them. Try searching at the second floor.

Vaikunta 14-07-2006 11:44 PM

Since no one used their speaking capabilities, I'm going to post the real plot of Ultima IX, to kill the curiosity that dissolved my interior and should dissolve other's interior, after having finished Pagan, the only thing I thought was "What happened?"... (hope I'm not going to be punished).

“Rather than releasing the whole script, which I could still get in trouble for, I will synopsize the plot for you. When I came on board at Origin, the original ideas for what they wanted from a script were in place but it had not been written yet. John Watson, Brian Martin and Richard did the first pass at it. I was given the script and told to find holes in it. We all worked together (along with Chuck Zoch, at that time a designer...now programmer) toward the first re-writes and clean ups.

So here goes:

(opening Flic) The Avatar arrives at the start of the game in Britannia. His last thoughts are of being seized by the Guardian in Pagan. Suddenly he was pulled away and arrives back in LB’s realm. Unfortunately he doesn’t recognize where he is. Standing on a mountain overlooking the Guardian’s keep at Terfin. This is where the wyrmguard suddenly flies up and incinerates the Avatar.

Cut to scene of dark throne room with Guardian in shadow talking to Blackthorn. Blackthorn is happy at the Avatar’s death but Guardian realizes he was teleported away by someone and is now in Stonegate. Blackthorn wants to go after him, but Guardian says to wait. He wants the Avatar to see how he is destroying Britannia and wants the Avatar to despair.

Game opens: Avatar in bed in Stonegate with Hawkwind nursing him. Just to be certain the Avatar is fit and unchanged by his trip to Pagan and the teleport back here, Hawkwind asks the virtue questions, setting up the Avatar character for the game. He then tells the Avatar about what has happened since he left 80 years ago (time in Pagan ran so much slower). Giant columns appear through out the land. Somehow the columns are affecting the climate, drying up some areas and flooding others, in addition there are tearing through the ground causing earthquakes and volcanism on a great scale. These climactic changes have caused wide spread famine in some parts of the world. In addition a plague began to run rampant through the land probably caused by the deplorable conditions. The people of Moonglow were able to produce limited quantities of food via magic, some of which the export through the land. Britain monks found that the venom of the Silver Serpent would provide relief from the plague, but was no cure. Something happened (you discover later) and Britain refused to send serpentwyne to Moonglow and Moonglow refused to send food to Britain. The army divided and civil war is at hand. He then tells the Avatar to descend into the tunnels under Stonegate and travel via those dungeon passages to Britain and see Lord British. Hawkwind disappears saying he must rest a long time now since the summoning drained him so. The area of Stonegate, now surrounded by mountains and cut off by the sea, provided the training or tutorial area for the new interface.

Along the way to Britain, the Avatar is knocked unconscious by a teleport area that he must go through. He receives a vision (flic). The Guardian taunts the Avatar and says he is glad he will be able to watch while he shows Lord British what the Avatar was up to in Pagan. LB is has a waking dream and sees the Avatar summoning Pyros.

Once the Avatar arrives in Britain he has already had to deal with one wyrmguard (Damon) and is probably wearing the armor. People in Britain run from him and once at the castle, Geoffrey asks him to get rid of it. LB confronts the Avatar and wants to know about the dream but accepts the ideas that the Avatar had to do what is necessary, but he seems disturbed none-the-less. LB informs the Avatar that the world is almost at the brink of civil war. LB’s health began to decline rapidly a few years ago so he appointed a tribunal. The leader of Moonglow mages (Verona), the leader of the Valorian knights (Sir Corwin), and the leader of the Britain monks (Amoranth). Things went well at first, but once the columns rose, famine set in and the plague appeared they would feud with each other all the time. then when the shipment of food, bought and paid for) failed to arrive in Britain Amoranth accused Verona of treason and inhumanity, Verona screamed the same story about a serpentwyne shipment. Ever since then the world fractured into a group of city states. LB is worried since Britain and Moonglow are building armies, one commanded by Corwin’s daughter and the other by his son. If it were not for Corwin’s cooling factor with their generals, they would already be at war. He implores the Avatar to stop the civil war, stop the famine and plague and he thinks the columns are at the root of it all. LB tires quickly and due to him being so old a frail, he can no longer command the respect of his armies or people anymore and he still thinks the Tribunal is the best thing for the country. LB warns the Avatar to stay away from Asylum, that is run by dangerous, treasonous thugs.

The Avatar finds Shamino in the Abbey in Britain in a trance. He has to use the Bell, Book and Candle to free him. He finds out from Shamino that the rangers disappeared a few years back and he felt an unholy call luring him away. He placed himself in the trance in hopes that if the Avatar returns he could wake him and the call would be no more. Shamino no longer feels the call and joins up with the Avatar.

The Avatar sets off for the closest column near Despise. On his way he is confronted by wyrmguards in camp. During the fight a girl jumps into the fray and ends up spearing a female wyrmguard through the eye and driving them off. The Avatar is grateful and she introduces herself as Raven. Raven was sent to find the Avatar and bring him back to Asylum (Buc’s Den) and meet with her boss Samhayne. He has some clues to the problems and he knows the Avatar is here to help solve them.

In Despise the free one of the corrupt runes of virtue from the column, thus stopping its power.

They journey back to Britain and then on to meet Samhayne. Samhayne is like a benevolent Don Corleone. He has been running contraband food and serpentwyne throughout the world, even running the blockades of Moonglow and Britain. He knows that the war is closer than anyone thinks, but proof must be taken to LB to get him to dissolve the tribunal and try to assume command. Samhayne is not trustworthy in Shamino’s view and he wants proof of what is going on. Samhayne tells the Avatar to journey to Valoria and meet with Corwin. He will tell you the truth. Then come back here and we will get things going.

He travels to Valoria with companions and goes to see Corwin. Corwin and his new aide Darkblade meet with the Avatar. He explains the situation and confirms Samhayne’s suspicions. The Avatar convinces the Lord of Valoria to send word to his kids to disarm and meet at a negotiation table. He agrees once the Avatar gets him over his despair. The Avatar heads back to Asylum and meets with Samhayne. He tells LB that he must get more proof of the war preparations so that LB can confront the factions. The only way he can find out for sure is to make contact with Sam’s guild operatives inside Britain and Moonglow and ’lift’ some papers. Some of the guild objects to an outsider making guild contact so Samhayne talks the Avatar into joining the guild. The Avatar is branded with the secret sign and is sent on his way to his choice Moonglow or Britain.

During the sea voyage he gets another third person dream (flic) courtesy of the Guardian. This time LB sees the Avatar joining the nefarious Guild and being branded. LB becomes more distraught and is now wondering about the Avatar.

The plot branches here but funnels back together quickly. Avatar goes to Moonglow/Britain. Makes contact with a guild operative and gets a disguise. He enters the Court of Truth/Abbey of Love and during his riffling of desks and such overhears Amoranth/Verona and their lackey Ebontyne/Shadowbriar discuss the war preparation. Whichever is gone to first, the Avatar escapes with no problem. When spying on the second one the Avatar is discovered and is captured and knocked unconscious.

Here is another dream (flic). This time LB sees the Avatar thrown in prison for spying on one of the Tribunal members. LB looks like he is getting angry now.

Back to the game: The Avatar awakens in Wrong. Ebontyne/Shadowbriar stands before the doorway and morphs into Blackthorn. He taunts the Avatar telling him that he has been behind all the seeds of war, planting them in the mind of Amoranth and Verona. He tells the Avatar that his only stumbling block is Sir Corwin who is trying to get his kids to a bargaining table, thanks to the Avatar’s meddling, and by this time tomorrow Corwin won’t be troubling anyone anymore. Blackthorn leaves and the Avatar and Raven (Also caught trying to free the Avatar while he was unconscious) their cell and dungeon (turning off another column along the way). the find Shamino outside and waiting. The run to find a ship and get to Sir Corwin as fast as they can, but by the time they arrive it is too late and he is already dead, but the body was stolen also. All that is left behind is an arrow.

Following the clue of the arrow and questioning Fletchers and Apothecaries (it was poisoned) leads to a description of the perpetrator, the female wyrmguard that Raven fought earlier. In addition one of the Apothecary is a medium and through a trance locates the body in the Well of Souls on the Ruined isle of Skara Brae. She tells the Avatar that a spell for speaking with dead cast upon the body would reveal the truth behind the assassination and that she foresees that this could stop the war. The Avatar and companions head to the Well, retrieve the body, fight a bone dragon lots of undead and turn off another column.

When they leave the dungeon a messenger arrives telling them the armies have taken the field near the shrine of justice. Avatar and friends hurry to the shrine in time to meet with Amoranth, Verona and the commanders. Verona casts the spell. Dead Corwin reveals that his lackey Darkblade is actually Ebontyne, Shadowbriar and Blackthorn and he is behind the war. Darkblade, who is in the tent, suddenly reverts to his Blackthorn form and the whole area is beset with wyrmguards and dragons. During the fight, Blackthorn exits kidnapping Amoranth and Verona and taunting the Avatar to come and get them at Terfin.

At the end of the fight Janna arrives with word that the other old companions awaits the Avatar in the sanctuary of Cove. They think they know where the Plague is coming from and what the columns are doing. The Avatar travels to Cove along the way another dream (flic). LB sees the Avatar stand before the armies of the world and now look to be swearing fealty to him. LB is furious as the Guardian whispers to him that the Avatar is planning to usurp the throne and seize Britannia. He will no longer allow the Avatar inside the Castle unless he has a member of the Tribunal with him.

Once in Cove the Avatar learns that the columns are causing the plague. As long as they are powered the plague will continue. In addition they are like clock springs, winding up. Even if they are unpowered their energy is not released. In time they will ’let go’ and quite possibly rip apart the world. They also have now received reports that the Guardian is massing his wyrmguard and gargoyle army and is planning on attacking Britain and other cities. They must perform a pre-emptive attack before all of his forces can muster. Samhayne will provide ships and the army is ready but they need and air force and the only thing that could help are the dragons of Destard.

The Avatar journeys to Trinisic and goes to see the Queen of the Dragons in nearby Destard. He has to rescue her and a clutch of eggs from some new wyrmguard raiders after which she agrees to help. Now with all the forces moving to place, the Avatar sets off for the other dungeons in order to turn off the remaining columns, except the Abyss. He needs one of the Gargoyle lenses from LB to open the path . Once they are done a ship arrives to take Avatar and companions to Terfin to meet the Guardian and Blackthorn.

Lots of fighting and wandering in Terfin, finally the Avatar reaches the throne room and finds Blackthorn there, but the Guardian has already left for parts unknown. Blackthorn grovels and pleads for mercy. Shamino suggest bringing him to LB so he can confess. The Avatar takes Blackthorn to LB and he confesses. LB has Blackthorn put to death. LB is getting some strength and vigor back thanks to the shutdown of the columns (save one) and Hawkwind’s arrival in the castle a few days ago. Hawkwind warns that the columns are primed and will release soon destroying everything and funneling the power of that destruction into the Guardian making him greatly powerful. He says that the plan had been to keep the Avatar busy and off balance long enough for the columns to finish the wind up. Hawkwind says that the runes of virtue can save the populace if we can get them to Skara Brae as soon as possible. He says to place the runes at the carnal points of the compass marked on the island and the virtues will take care of the rest. He then indicates that LB and the Avatar must make a final journey to Stonegate to confront the Guardian for it was from there that he cast forth the runes to form the columns.

Before the Avatar can go to Skara Brae he gets the lens from LB (and one he got earlier from Vesagralem ,the Gargoyle king...another story) and journeys to the Abyss. He fights the Slasher of the Veils, turns off the column and releases Amoranth and Verona which journey with him back to Skara Brae.

Lots of people on Skara Brae when Avatar, LB, Verona and Amoranth arrive. Companions all stay while Avatar places runes and leaves with LB. They arrive at Stonegate and face the Guardian in one of the lower chambers and slay him, but LB is weakened in the battle. Hawkwind appears once more and tells the Avatar that even though the Guardian is defeated for he moment the power of the unleashed life energy when the columns let go will restore him and power him up. The life force of Britannia must be eliminated to defeat him for good. LB mentions the Armageddon spell. They must get to the roof of Stonegate pronto! Once getting there LB is incapable of doing the spell, he is too weak and decides if Britannia must die then he will go with his world. The Avatar discovers that he too must infuse himself into the spell and that he will ’pass on’ with its casting. Hawkwind’s voice tells him that this is but a step and that he will ascend beyond this realm to a higher place. Avatar casts the spell.

(The really freaking cool flic occurs): Spell of destruction rips forth from Stonegate moving forth in waves across the land. Deer flash into ashes, trees blow up, cities are destroyed. Worried people stand on Skara brae as they can see the wave of destruction heading their way. Suddenly waves of light pulse from the runes and lines of power form a dome over the island just as the destructive wave hits. Slowly the island pulls loose from the planet (looks like an old Roger Dean painting form the Yessongs album) and rockets out into space. A cut from above shows the speck of light zooming off into the distance with most of Britannia and the companions on board. Slowly we see the planet crack and tear apart, then a final explosion. Closing credits...........................”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s what Bob White himself thought about the whole affair:

“My reason for answering [inquiries about the original plot]was really to show the fans how games and their stories evolve. Often times the evolution is out of our hands (via deadlines, corporate changes and such). The game you have now has a very good story and is an Ultima, I am sure Richard saw to that. Don’t let any bugginess in the product overshadow what the core of the game is. In time the bugs will be cleared up and the game will shine and all will be happy.

The old story was monumental in scope and because of a lot of factors things had to change and progress to what it is now. Would I have liked to seen the old plot completed....You bet! Am I dissappointed it changed, not really since I expected it. New people on a project bring new ideas and new focuses and those are not necessarily bad. What you have is a talented core design team who assembled the best story for an Ultima that they thought possible. This was the same thing when I was there, but we had a different focus and different ideas. Which one is better...that is all up to individual tastes, but what is there now is still a great story and very Ultima.

Hats off to a a talented team for working through an unbelievable hard deadline and under very adverse conditions. They have created a monumental product and one they can be proud of. A big pat on the back to Bill, Chuck, Dave, Jim, Andy, Herman, Gary, Bev, Jennifer, Scottie-cakes, Scott, Bren, Michael, Bob, Seth, Richard, Amy, Carly and who ever else I missed. I am sure that Bill and his team of programmers are pulling their hair out nightly to kill off the bugs and make the game even better. I look forward to adventuring my way through Brittania...as soon as I get past my own deadlines :)”

There's no problem with this patch. The books are always there, and you have to think twice before you find hints for the test in them, maybe you just overlooked them. Try searching at the second floor.

I just finished the game, after playing it a second time, the books at the monastery of the theurgists suddenly were there. In my first play, they were not there so I guess that WAS a bug.

Roadkill 20-07-2006 12:27 PM

You know the monastery of the theurgist, Can anyone tell me what the hell that funny shape changing item is.... If you double click on it the avater says he is not powerful enough to use it yet.

I've finished the game twice now and have found no use for it so far.

Scatty 20-07-2006 02:36 PM

Ah yes, there're only rumors, that this item was originally intended to play some role in the never released expansion "Lost Vale". It doesn't play any role in the original game, however, except that sentence and the kneeling of Avatar.
Another strange "item" - if you leave Tenebrae by the east gate (in the left town part of Tenebrae) and go up to the "north" until you reach the river, then follow the river until the mountains arise, you'll see a small cave. If you enter this cave and go through to a spot where they're bars enclosing a chest and two (if I remember correctly) levers, and then continue further south and little down, you'll see a sack with some reagents. Somewhere either below the sack or in it there's a strange white-blue item that slightly resembles a whistle. You can't use it in any way, and you can't use it as a reagent. Anyone else noticed it, and maybe knows more about it?

Edit: Actually people, guess what? There was ONE copy of Lost Vale box that was released and has been sold! Though it seems no actual addon as the software itself. Someone bought it for a private collection and some information about it can be found here:

About the Lost Vale addon, the developers really worked on it, but couldn't finish it in time. Here's a link to where you can find some screenshots of the real game. http://www.bootstrike.com/Ultima8/downloads.html
The download is entitled Ultima VIII: Lost Vale Screen Shots . This site is great, has tons of things about ultima.

Theres a really good sound patch here and also one that allows you to run the game under windows 98... ufortunately its not compatible with windows XP but I'm sure a few of you smart buggers out there could work your way around that. :ok:

Download DosBox from the Programs section on the main site and play Ultima 8 in it.

The Fifth Horseman 03-08-2006 12:34 PM

It seems you are trying to run the game in plain Windows. I strongly suggest you use DosBox instead.
You can download DosBox here.

If you have any problems with it, try having a look at the official FAQ on the DosBox site.
Basic Setup and Installation
Command Line
Z instead of C at the command prompt
Internal Programs (important, especially MOUNT)
Most of the stuff in there is not really needed, but youb would do best to familiarize yourself with the specific topics I linked to.
The mounting of your DosBox games directory, switching the promt to the emulated C: drive and clearing the screen from previous commands can all be executed from the [autoexec] section of dosbox.conf, so you won't have to re-type them every time round.
Frontend programs can help running DosBox with varying configurations for different games.
For both a more accessible user interface and oldschool feel, you can use Norton Commander (get it from our programs and utilities page - scroll down to the bottom to find it). NC might seem awkward at first, but in fact it is a very functional genuine DOS era file manager frontend. It has a plethora of functions that will help you in navigating around the directories, while still retaining the command prompt.

Though all of this might seem complicated, it's very easy once you get used to it. So remember:

DON'T PANIC!!! ^_^

Vaikunta 03-08-2006 09:55 PM

I've decided to post random tips without spoilers regularly to help those who only seek guidance.

Magical weapons weigh only 1, so this means you can have lots of them in your backpack. The Deceiver, Khumash-Gor's scimitar and Flame Sting are the best melee weapons (there are no missile, for some reason) with advantages on each one. I strongly recommend having these with you, on specific situations you will learn with experience.

Guest 05-08-2006 12:21 AM

how dost thou jump on this game?

swiss 05-08-2006 06:30 AM

thou needest to press both mouse buttons at the same time, Avatar.

At least that is what I think to remember ...

Guest_Aubor_* 06-08-2006 07:48 AM

Wonderfull. The download is back and the evil empire of ESA has relented. Horah!!

This is the only Ultima game I have never played. I remember looking at the box in the store when it was new and wondered, "Should I buy this? or should I get Mercenaries instead?". I had been burnt out by the massive openess of Black Gate so relented and bought the quick fix instead. I have never been able to find it since. Thank God for Abandonia.

Ever thought about getting Privateer 2: The Darkening? Blood Bowl? Birthright? Spycraft? TerraNova? Mechwarrior 2?

I have a few of those on hand for uploading but not all. Also I was suprised to not see any Bards Tales from the old Atarii series.

The Fifth Horseman 07-08-2006 03:00 PM

Blood Bowl is actually already on the site :). Terra Nova and MW2 are not eligible - SOLD and ESA'd, respectively, if I recall it right.

Vaikunta 07-08-2006 09:26 PM

Random tip:

I forgot to mention, but the best weapon on the game is RUN! You are faster than most things in Pagan. The only enemies you should face in the beginning are Ghouls, those slow-reaction zombies that wander. They are abundant and are fairly easy to kill. To attack efficiently, just double-click when your weapon is behind your head, in a "prepare" position. When it attacks and comes back again, double-click. If you have a biy of experience, you should begin the double-click almost before the weapon is readied, but you can "block" the attack (useless)

If you are running it under Windows, you can activate a function that enables you to use the NumPad as the mouse itself, the Num5 being the left-click. Using it is better in a way, you don't have to smash your mouse to attack fiercely. Just enter the Command Panel and search for something like accesibility options

DON'T FACE MORE THAN 1 ENEMY AT A TIME! This is important too. When you have killed enough ghouls, and have a magic weapon such as the Deceiver (1-19 attack), you can face thougher enemies.

Vaikunta 16-08-2006 10:02 PM

What is needed to keep this alive?

If you find a locked door, this applies to Tenebrae mainly, try to jump and climb something in order to gain entrance to the house. Those little 'outposts' you see going south from Mordra's palace can be breached. It is easy, just take little steps forwars until that 'bridge' becomes invisible, meaning you are below it, then go backwards 1 step and put the cursor in you, then jump. You will climb it and feel free to plunder.

OK. Edit the dosbox.conf file.
Under the [render] sectionframeskip is default 0. Change it to 5
Under the [cpu] section cycles is default 3000. Change it to 6500
or press Ctrl+F12 until cycles at the top reads 6500

This will not harm dosbox in any way. it will not harm your computer either. another trick that you can look at is by pressing right-clicking your taskbar and then click task manager. click the processes tab and then click on "user name" click on all the processes linked to your username except for explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe and then click end process. even thought there is a warning. click yes. then rund dosbox.

also set your options inside the game it is textspeed or something to a value other than 5. if to slow set higher. if too fast set lower. you can also activate frame skipping if needed. :brain:

Hey, I used to play this game when I was younger, and just found it again. I've downloaded it, and have got it to load in dosbox, but i can't actually seem to play it!
My mouse doesnt seem to work. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Like, I get dropped in the water, asked for my name, and then I end up by that guy and the boat and the fish. And I move the mouse around, which shows up as a blue arrow, but it doesn't do anything.
Can someone help??
I've tried to look in all the online handbooks I can find, but nothing seems to have the answer! Any help would be really appreciated!
Thanks

to add to that, it doesn't tell you how to save your game.

Play it in DosBox, and increase the CPU cycles with CTRL+F12 for faster speed. To save the game, press ESC and choose save game. Quite obvious for almost all games I know.

Being an old Ultima die hard since IV I found U8 lacked many of the qualities that made the series great and unique. The graphics are excellent and the music enchanting however the storyline was annoying, I did not like the whole business of another world. I still plau Ultima Online and still feel of all the RPG series that hav4 been written the Avatar was the best, however this chapter was below what I expected.

The Fifth Horseman 26-10-2006 02:11 PM

DosBox can be switched between windowed and fullscreen modes by pressing [ALT]+[ENTER].

You might also want to check out the official DosBox FAQ, and particularly this part of it. It is quite helpful for users unfamiliar with DosBox.
And don't forget the readme file. It's got all the keyboard shortcuts listed.

You can configure the starting values of frameskip, cycles and so on in dosbox.conf.

Guest 30-10-2006 08:08 PM

allright..!! problems solved.. yet another has revealed :wallbash: .. this game runs slow on my computer, if i try to increase its speed by using F6 or F12 the game moves faster but it's getting lagged. i'm using WINXP supported by Pentium 4 1.6 GHz and 256MB of memory, can u tell me what's the best setting 4 this spec? or is there any way to play this game perfectly on my computer? everything runs well except for the game gets lagged everytime i tried to increase its speed :tai:

The Fifth Horseman 31-10-2006 12:17 PM

Let's try the following
1. Enable Dynamic Core (that's in Dosbox.conf)
2. Increase cycles
3. Increase frameskip

Look in Start -> Programs -> Dos Box -> Dos Box Conf

Basically, the conf file is just a text file that can be edited just by typing the words, phrases and numbers you want. All you have to do, when you find it, is to open it and edit the relevant lines. In the conf there is plenty of information on what the different lines do and what options you have in editing them.

Being a text file, you can also open and edit it in say, Notepad.

EDIT: IMPORTANT. If you're really new to this, you should make a back-up copy of the conf file before editing it.

That is indeed the maximum, as far as I remember. One trick to increasing your strength and dexterity right at the start, by the way, is to immediately attack Devon (the fellow who pulls you out of the sea at the beginning). He will not fight back or call Beren the Sorcerer, and being a game-crucial character, is immortal. Keep hitting him until your Strength and Dexterity are at a satisfactory level, and although he won't talk to you for the time being, later he will forget your nastiness and talk as normal.

That method indeed works but it is not impossible to go through the game without it. Ghouls are the main source of experience for me. If you have enough patience to save often, it shouldn't be the problem. But anyway, intelligence won't go up and the only two methods I know that work are reading and casting tons of spells.

Saphire 10-12-2006 06:56 PM

Just go to the library in Tenebrae where Benthic is staying (in the beginning), find the shortest book and begin to read it again and again. Be sure to not abort the reading of the book with double-click but to "finish reading it" (it must have been a single click, I don't remember anymore). With some patience you should be able to raise your intelligence few points (best 20) which is actually also quite enough for the rest of the game, and the remaining points will come later through casting magic.

Carcaroth 10-12-2006 08:19 PM

Man, this game is awesome. I remember that it was the first game in which I felt kinda desperate, specially cause it was supposed to make you feel like this: lost in a world that is not yours, where you don't even know what can make you harm. It's perfect.

I didn't feel desperate when I first started to play this game, but it certainly had a special, enchanted mood for me. Before I got this game I saw some screenshots of the beta version from the net, and the graphics of the game caught me like no game before. That was long ago, when I just began to discover the computer games, and this game is still one of my favourites.
There's no need to hack at anyone in the game btw. to increase strength and dexterity, all you need is just to go somewhere where no one would run by mistake before your blade, draw your weapon and begin to swing it with the right mouse click all the time. Takes time but makes you right in the beginning of the game quick and strong.

Mighty Midget 10-12-2006 10:55 PM

I always started the game with jumping like a madman in front of Devon- Sure, it takes as much time as any other trick, but I think "the sticky key" worked in this one. Go put the kettle on, and return some time later to return to your adventure.

Vaikunta 18-12-2006 08:14 PM

I found a way to preserve your mouse buttons in Pagan, since you must constantly double-click to fight and so... Go to your control panel and go to accesibility (or something like that, it's the green guy in a chair) and then mouse. Enable the use and configure it so as it works when Num Lock is deactivated. Then, in the game, just press 5 in the keypad as if it was your mouse left button.

Vaikunta 20-12-2006 11:52 PM

Doch, I know I am double-posting. Hope this isn't a grievous crime...

I found two great things in the net just today. One is a remake of Ultima 9 with the Morrowind engine. It is called Ultima 9:Redemption and the site is this one.

The other thing is this other site with an article (lack for a better word) about how Origin was swallowed up by EA. The Escapist - Conquest of Origin

Another thing that came to my mind was that I read somewhere someone said that character portraits wouldn't be necessary with the high-resolution of Pagan... But how can they expect us to notice anything from those 9 pixel height faces? The only thing I managed to discover about facial expressions is that Devon's eyes are blue.

Guest 28-12-2006 03:52 PM

i had a manual of ultima VIII

How do you run VDM and Dosbox simultanously?

When I run u8 in DosBox, it says

Filename =sound\sound.flx
Mode = ReadOnly
Error = 1930
Dos Error=0000
Source=FLEX\FLEX.C (84)
Program halted by code

Can s1 pplz help me run u8??
Thanks

Mighty Midget 09-01-2007 02:33 PM

Excuse me, but why on earth would you want to run VDMSound and Dosbox simulatously? One should be enough, I think. Try run it through VDMSound only and see if that works.

Question: How do you wash a single pair of pants in two machines?
Answer: You don't.

HomerDOHSimpson 04-02-2007 05:46 PM

If you install U8 from your original floppies the game extract some sort of file and there is this message "don't abort process...blah... you have to reinstall". I wanna play my german version and after the gamefile ist extracted i run it in dosbox and it works... until i exit the game and restart, then comes "fault you have to reinstall"
Since on Abandonia is the english (working) version i wanna know how this problem was solved. I this a dosbox problem (Read/write prob of the hdd's during)? I have no real dos environment.

HomerDOHSimpson 04-02-2007 07:45 PM

It was the U8SHAPES.CMP - it extracts to U8SHAPES.FLX.
In my case the rest of the .cmp file is not deleted (17kb) but the .flx has the same size like the english one. I deleted the .cmp manually and hope that no error occurs.

Guest 14-02-2007 10:29 PM

hi guys. im having trouble with the game. btw, it rules :) im stuck in the part when one is to become the necromencers apentrice, right after the ritual. the one performed after u give the serpentine dagger to its prior owner. after the three zombies are summoned by the grey guy and he speaks the magic words, there is an earhtquake, then it becomes stuck, the earthquanke doesnt stop. have u had also the same trouble? how do i fix it? thx

Guest 15-02-2007 12:11 AM

Do you play it in DosBox, under VDMSound or just in plain Windows XP? If in Windows XP, there you have your problem, DosBox solves it well.

Saphire 15-02-2007 07:08 PM

Did you try to load a game before the dagger has been returned? Maybe it's just a bug.

Guest 15-02-2007 10:22 PM

thx guys for the replys. the bug solved itself. i pushd pretty much every key on my keyboard, when i hit the f5 or f6 key (quick-save, i think) the tremor ended and the grey guy put an end to everything ^^ finally, now i can become his apprentice and raise the dead to obey my commands!!! muahahahah :P thx anyways

Guest 10-03-2007 02:53 PM

the necromancer doesn't take the dagger. there is no dialogue option to give it to him and no other way.
how can i solve this problem. i MUST play it to the end^^.
plz help me

RyuRanX 12-03-2007 07:44 PM

Humm I'm trying to play it on new DosBox 0.70, it's fast and the sounds is OK, but the colors are all wrong. The menus and intro are OK, it's just the in-game graphics that are strange.

is this a compatibility issue?

The Fifth Horseman 13-03-2007 01:39 PM

Does the same occur on 0.65 and 0.63? Also, care to show us a screenshot of what's happening?

Some1 who stumbled upon Abandoni 14-03-2007 04:13 PM

I am going to download this game because it looks fairly good for a old game. Is it wise to start playing this even if you've never played it before? Or is this one of those games you can only enjoy if you used to play it in the way back? Just wondering if its worth it.

The Fifth Horseman 14-03-2007 04:58 PM

It's one of those games you can happily download and enjoy without knowing it before. Most of those on the site are, since while their graphics might look a tad outdated, the sheer fun from gameplay is superior to that of many modern productions.

grzes 07-06-2007 10:27 AM

nice game. climate like in divine, best rpg for me

Scatty 07-06-2007 10:32 AM

Indeed, a great game that Origin created back then. Too bad they didn't finish it due to the time pressure of Electronic Arts (today renamed to EA Games)...

zirtik 11-06-2007 11:38 AM

hi, i play the game using dosbox 0.70 but i've run across a problem. i'm in stone cove and i need to create a golem to open the big double doors. i cast the spell, the screen shakes and parts of the golem appear on the ground however it never comes completely out of the ground. i can give it instructions but it does not move so i cannot open the doors and i'm stuck. did any of you get a similar bug? do you have any ideas? any cheats to open the door?

Scatty 11-06-2007 11:59 AM

Die it happen every time you reload the savegame and summon him again?

zirtik 11-06-2007 01:32 PM

yes, i've loaded previous saves and tried again (in other places) but it's always the same.

Scatty 12-06-2007 12:24 AM

Well, maybe far-fetched, but open the file DOSBox.conf and search for the line [dos]. At ems=true change it to ems=false. If it doesn't help also disable xms, or play around trying to enable one and disable the other cross-over.

zirtik 12-06-2007 01:30 PM

thank you for the reply. i tried it but it didn't work. i also tried different combinations of the settings but none of them worked. i'll download pagan from another source and try again, maybe on a different computer. if everything fails, i'll try pentagram (too bad it can't load save games). thanks

Any Help?

obs: i don't use dosbox because my computer is old and run it very slowly, but i run
most games from this site with no problems.

Mighty Midget 14-07-2007 09:51 PM

What is your operating system? You could try the DOS boot disc downloadable from Abandonia.

Also, there is alwys a chance your download is corrupt. If so, you need to get a working copy.

Guest 14-07-2007 10:05 PM

My operation system is Windows 98.
I already have this program but i dont know how to use it
java script:emoticon('<_<', 'smid_1')
<_<

_r.u.s.s. 14-07-2007 10:09 PM

to use bootdis, stick the diskette in to your case and restart pc.

if nothing happens, your boot priority is set to hdd at first, so you need to set 'floppy disk' as first boot drive

Mighty Midget 14-07-2007 10:10 PM

The boot disc is just a disc you use to boot your computer, sending you straight into the land of DOS instead of Windows. It may need a bit of tweaking for sound however, but you can use our "troubleshooting" to ask for help about that.

Guest 14-07-2007 10:38 PM

java script:emoticon(':w00t:', 'smid_17')
:w00t:

Hey! It worked!

But with no soundjava script:emoticon('', 'smid_6')

How do i get sound?

run install exe, and choose your soundcard(try soundblaster 16, 220, 5, 1; and adlib for music)

Guest 14-07-2007 10:45 PM

java script:emoticon(':ok:', 'smid_9')
:ok: Thanks man

Ultima VIII patch application 01-08-2007 03:17 PM

Will someone please tell me how to apply the 2.12 patch to Ultima VIII. I have the installed the game and can play it just fine with music and everything, but I do not know how to apply the patch. I have downlaoded the file in its zip form, and then I extract the files into the Ultima8 folder, and the patch does not apply. I have even re-compressed the files using the Restart command after extracting the patch into the Ultima8 folder, and the patch does not apply. What must I do?

_r.u.s.s. 01-08-2007 03:27 PM

you must read readme from the patch

you can get some patches here http://www.bootstrike.com/Ultima8/downloads.html but i dont think there will be a speech pack. for that you need to get better version, wherever you have downloaded it from=)

Ultima VIII speech pack 02-08-2007 12:12 AM

Hello. If I obtain the speech pack later, would I have to delete my currently saved files in order to install it, as with the patch, or can I impliment it into my saved games?

_r.u.s.s. 02-08-2007 12:18 AM

first of all, that wouldnt be patch but stolen file from original game (it is still protected). and second of all, i dont think you would need to delete your save games

This is one of my fav games of all time, and the best ultima game, is dark and spooky. I had the original unpatched version which is impossible from the sourcers onwards as you have to have the regnants on the right bloody pixel to get a spell to work. I then downloaded the patch and completed the game, with a little help from a guide, I was so close doing it on my own. Gutted!

Oh yeh and there was no point to the pilgramage bit, as they never bothered programming it.

My rating 10/10

It's a shame that parts of this game do feel incomplete. Especially when you then here that there were plans for an expansion which got canned. You could see Electronic Earts rearing its ugly head even back then!

This is the worst of all Ultimas, even U9 was better, and that means a lot. This is in no way connected to Ultima, its more a jump and run. Its badly scripted, the quests are a disaster, and jesus, the memory manager thing was a total screwup. I wish this game had never happened!:flame:

Scatty 12-07-2009 04:29 PM

Ultima VIII was heavily criticised by fans of the Ultima series since it came out, but, maybe because I played it before I got to know the rest of the Ultima games, I actually found this game to be very charming und special.
Sure it's different to the other Ultima parts, sure it has a lot arcade elements in it unlike the other ones, including the real-time combat, but training makes the master. And sure it has a lot of unfinisched ties in the story and a lot of, sometimes nasty, bugs which weren't still fixed with the patch. For that it offers a strange and unique world which quickly drew me into it's charm and mysterious mood which is perfectly supported by the music.

So, not being a die-hard fan of Ultima games though I love many of them, I don't think this is the worst game in the series but actually one of the best along with the two side-parts Ultima Underworld and Ultima Underworld II. And I played Ultima 9 through, too.
It's just a shame the promised addon The Lost Vale never came out for it.

Yep, just run the installer and change the sound configuration to match your

No I haven't, I didn't know vdmsound was configurable..I thought I remembered just putting some files in the game directory.

I'll read up on it I guess!

Ok I messed around a bit and got it working, I didn't realize you needed to set the .exe to "run as vdms"...it seems to work great now, thanks alot.

I tried playing this about 10 years ago. It seemed decent enough, but of course I chose to store all of my stuff in some sort of container that apparently resets and deletes everything in it, and that just happened to be the container I used, and so I lost everything I had in it. Made me so mad, I quit playing.

knobfer 21-07-2009 03:43 PM

The game is currently unavailable to download Ulrik.

jasonmloh 07-08-2009 11:40 AM

Regarding VDMS

There are two other file extensions to consider when using VDMS Sound. You already know how to configure using EXE the other two would be COM and BAT. Every dos game consists of these 3 executable extensions. Of course I personally have not tried it but I bet its worth a try ( the game runs with sound and you got yourself a helluva bargain )

Bottoms Up. :D

Can't Download Game

If you don't see the Download Button that means the game is sold by a merchant entity, which means that if you want the game you have to buy it. ( There are other alternatives which I will not mention here. Look around and you might just be able to get for free ).

Enjoy thy games. :D

Are you perhaps attempting to write over the beginning entry? If so its not possible, you need to start from the 2nd entry and after clicking the blank space it should allow you to write whatever you wish there and then just hit enter to save it.

I brought Pagan on the 3.5 and CD only installed to see if it worked and then put it away. I did like what I saw though and was planning on playing it one day which never came. I still have them and the whole Ultima collection. I would like to see a return to Ultima but guess that would never happen and yes, out of the whole series Ultima 7 and its expansions was the best.

golan 28-08-2009 08:17 AM

Unprotected - YEY! Time to celebrate :)

So, is this the full game or a CD-rip?

Scatty 28-08-2009 09:32 AM

There is no such thing as a Cd-Rip of Ultima VIII, the game is installing itself fully from the files on CD and plays from hard drive. This is what you have for download here, the installed and ready full game.

MV75 28-08-2009 02:15 PM

Yes, except that the "cd version" came with the speech pack integrated, the floppy version had it seperate.

Looks like its there. I just downloaded and compared it to mine installed from the original Ultima Collection CD and all the sound files look the same.
The directory from abandonia is 1-2MB bigger then mine though... Maybe mine doesnt have em, to be honest after all these years Ive never been interested in even starting Pagan so never actually played it hehe..

santadog 20-09-2009 07:15 PM

Just finished the game. At the moment my desk if filled with notes containing scribbled texts on reagents, spells and other obscurities. A game without a quest log or map of any kind was quite the challenge. Though early memories of my first playthrough during the nineties helped a lot.

Is a real shame that they never released the expansion. There are some screenshots out there and they look really interesting.

Oh, first post in this forum by the way. I just had to join up as thanks to Abandonia for making this game available.

Scatty 24-09-2009 07:21 AM

They actually did make a finished version of the expansion The Lost Vale though never released it for sale. But there is one single full version of it which was sold on eBay in around 2005 for a huge mass of money to a collector who's of course holding it tight instead of releasing it to everyone for being available.

Question :
is the Reagants that can be found around certain area will be regenerated again after some time passed or not ...
:mhh:

Scatty 28-11-2009 10:48 PM

Yes and no. Every single placed item in the game doesn't respawn so once it is used up or thrown into the water, it disappears forever. But you can get more reagents if you slay monsters who do respawn in some areas, some types of monsters tend sometimes to have some reagents on their corpses such as trolls, ghosts and probably skeletons though not that sure for the last. In any case you're better advised not to waste any reagent you find along the way, they're not unlimited.

I don't know, Scatty. My impression from that forum link is not that that a full, finished copy of an expansion was made, or sold, but that the box and its art are accurate. The fact that nobody has commented upon the code, and that neither Garriott nor EA are t screaming bloody murder over a game they supposedly own but was never sold and has now been auctioned off, should tell us all something.

Scatty 30-11-2009 09:54 AM

Well I don't think that a simple game box and maybe manual alone would be sold for so much money. It is a single, finished copy of the expansion for Ultima VIII which never made it out into producing more and distributing for sale, thus remaining the only piece of full Lost Vale available worldwide.

Borodin 01-12-2009 06:19 PM

Not too sure about that. I've seen some games going for $500 US and up. It's just possible that as time moves on, what we view as contemporary or slightly old will become viewed as antique. ;) And there are people who were practically teethed on the Ultima games. To have even the box art for one nobody else has...? Wouldn't surprise me. And I would be very surprised if a copy of a product never issued with public license by Garriott or EA was sold to somebody else without a bunch of lawyers stepping in.

I remember hearing on the BBC a few years back that a plastic saxophone owned by Charlie Parker, the legendary jazz musician, sold for $10 million US. Parker never saw $100,000 in his entire lifetime.

Of course, if it is real, the thing is very easy to prove. Just invite over a few reputable reviewers familiar with the Ultima series. Have them check out the box, and on film, capture them looking at, and playing, the title. I'll believe this one-copy-game exists when I see prove of it.

I get the same problem sometimes but only if I switch to full screen after starting a game.
Also, changing the output in DOSBox conf to ddraw or overlay solves the problem.

Scatty 20-02-2010 08:33 PM

That might be because the game's resolution is not the default 320x200 but some unusual one, not sure what it is exactly. If you start the game in fullscreen it should be displayed normally though.

Attn. - Yoga started U 8.

Good morning from sunny BG,

After my morning tea I will start the game Ultima 8..
I did some exercises and I am ready.
But these crocodile-like creatures are very strong!
Never mind.
Yoga crashed the powerful Lord Xeen (thanks clever Paco and other AB members) and will crash these current demons and wizards.
The Russians will said:
"Ни пуха, ни пера"
(Sorry, this can't be translated to Eng. It is some like Good luck. Ha ha ha)

So, yoga, grab your sword and Forward.

Paco 21-02-2010 09:55 AM

@Yoga Firstly you should train your Char to 25 (max) with slashing your Weapon in nothing and read so many Books as you can.

btw Most Monster cant be beaten or only with much Time and Work which is often not worth it. These Lizard are not very strong. ^^

yoga 21-02-2010 11:30 AM

Where is this Castle

Hi, Paco, ja, ja,

I agree with You.
But you finished the game before 3-4 years und yoga started before 3 hours..
For example now, where, the hell is this Castle in Central Tenebrae??
Will be very nice if You prepare a detailed map.
This way a idiot like yoga will find very easy the wanted location..

More: In my walkthrough stated:

Visit Mythran at the Plataeu:
Get money before you go.
Go to the castle in central Tenebrae.

Where? How many money?
Everyone know that money not lay on the street, even in Swiss.

The Castle is just North of the Gate where you entered the City. You should at last activate the Teleport-Portal in the Castle.

Forget the Plateau for the Time Being. The way to it is hard. Obsidian is the Current in Pagan. You should take your time and explore the City and loot it (but beware that no one can see if you steal something. Yes, this is not like other RPGs where you can freely loot anything)

For example go to Jewelry in East and sleep in her Bed for some Hours and check if she is out, then loot all Jewel on Table and sleep again and sell it back to her for some Money.

And some House in City have some nice Stuff, but some are protected by Traps. :D

oh while you are at it, Can you make some Screenshots of the Game with DOSBox? Some Screenshots on AB is of bad Quality, so it need to be replaced.

Edit:

and get the Key-Ring to put all Key you found on it. Its very helpful

yoga 21-02-2010 03:05 PM

@ Danke, Paco for yr instructions about U 8.

..Paco, no need to ask me for Screenshots of all..
You help me so much in Xeen so just say and finito.
I will send you Screenshots from Win XP and Win 7.

Just, just to enter this Castle, bitte.

North is in this Game Top-Right and South Bottom-Left. East Bottom-Right and West Top-Left.

Hello Capo!

Wow, my good friend Capo is here!

Great!!

Nice to meet YOU.

All nice gang is here (well respected Paco, nice goodhearted Scatty and YOU).

Viva Italy!! Forever..

As you see, me, humble yoga again is on the battled path, with painted of battle colors face and ready to crash down the bad Guardian as I crashed the bad Lord Xeen years ago..
Well, all help will be welcomed.

Note: As I walked up-down the Tanebrae, some creature - abs. copy of me attacked me. I was very surprised for a moment, but very soon sent this one in a better world.
Second note: Following the instruction of Paco to obtain money I visited a rich widow of the executed one and steeped in her house. She disappeared and I (shame for yoga) as real bandito grab her valuable stuff from the table. But she does not return back to sell these things. Why?

Yes, it is not like Xeen territory, but anyway I need iron boots..

Now I will practice my battle technics to reach higher points, but I am lazy to read all books. Anyway I am soldier not student..BTW I like fair battle not magics exercises.
Have I give some money (how) to beggars or not?

You need just one Book. So read through it rapid and again and again...

INT is needed for Mana Point. You can later cast Magic and so...
Magic is needed to complete the Game, believe me...

no, They arent important for the Story.

Scatty 22-02-2010 11:27 AM

Be sure to read the book until the end and close it with one click which counts as it being read, not with double-click which counts as aborting reading it and doesn't bring any experience. Best for such training of intelligence is a very short book with only one page, which you can open again and again, and finish also immediately with a single click. But you should be able to find enough books in the library of Tenebrae in the east part of the town (going through the gates at the right side from the palace).

As for practicing strength and dexterity, if it gets tedious after a while to whack with the weapon at the air, you can also climb up the walls and jump down again, or simply jump around which also trains both.

If you want to see what the consequences are for stealing stuff in the town and being caught, save the game and do so where you can be seen. It's pretty funny :D

Is that really necessary ? Dont looks very funny.

Scatty 22-02-2010 05:53 PM

If you want to have 25 intelligence already at the beginning of the game, yes. You have a better idea how to train it fast?

yoga 22-02-2010 07:20 PM

Победа будет за нами!!

I read the Clue book very slowly.

---Excuse me, can I know my coordinate in the space? (x and y)
For example: 25, 43

---I need good Axe.

I tried to kill one lizard, but another two lizards imm. helped the first (Warum), so I return and run away.
Tell me about attacked lizard:
Is its power regenerates to max, when I did using 5 sleeping hours?
When I returned to fight, has it the max strength?

My plan: To run on the lizard, try some swings, looking on my power indicator right down and when it shows decreasing of my power, run away in save place, sleep, and again and again till lizard is killed.

More: When I kill all bad creatures, they appeared again or not? Because in some RPG games when the hero visit some places, the game again and again regenerates creatures.

Some small little stupid girl asked me silly questions all the time she meet me?
Was ist das?

If is not neccesary i will totally avoid the " read 100 books and attack the air" part.

Scatty 23-02-2010 12:28 AM

You wouldn't get far in Ultima VIII then if you don't train your three statistics to 25. Dexterity increases the speed of the melee attacks and your armor class, strength increases the damage, while both of them increase the life points. And I repeat, you'll need all of this at maximum to not be frustrated with the game.
As for intelligence, as soon as you come in touch with magic (which will be pretty soon) you'll want to have intelligence (which dictates the mana points available) at maximum so earlier or later you'll have to train it up anyway. Better earlier to have all that behind you already and enjoy the game more.

In certain places the monsters are always again there once you leave the area and re-enter it. As for fighting the bigger creeps, you'll want to wait until you get hold of you first magic weapons, Yoga, they do more damage than normal weapons. The best normal weapon to begin with is a two-handed sword anyway, earliest location to get one - the smith in West-Tenebrae, just follow the road to the west and you'll come to his house. That'll make it a bit easier in the beginning.
But you'll probably want to consider leaving stronger enemies alone and make a big circle around them until later. Enemies to avoid at the beginning include - trolls (those giants with huge clubs), demons (red, horned, big nasty mouth and clawed hands), ghosts (black flowing robes with skull as head, can only be hurt with magic weapons, spawn flaming skulls which track you down and explode - ouch), kiths (red-brown six-legged spider-similar looking critters, they can bite painfully) and beholders (single big eye on top of a red tail which ends in a toothed mouth, can hurt painfully but have not many lifepoints). Trolls and demons especially make shashlik out of you quite fast. Ghouls are quite weak though, so are changelings who like to transform into your own figure.

Geez, I just noticed, you certainly re-saved and re-compressed the screenshots few times after they've been uploaded for the first time back then. Only the last one is sharp, a later addition. No wonder you would like some new ones.
Anyway, I'm off to download Ultima VIII to get hooked into it myself now. Thanks for the inspiration Yoga :D

Edit: this FAQ / Walkthrough is also in my opinion a better one than the one on this site, I used it years back when I was playing Ultima VIII often and it covers more detailled things about the game. Link

Edit2: there is also the last, updated version of the FAQ here - Link.
The change seems to consist mostly only of the new info about the U9 preview chest, whether such thing ever existed or not.

Hi, amigos,

Hurry to tell y some very interesting:
"Investigating the town Tenebrae I enter careless in the cemetery and ...was killed very strange.."
Some creature attacked me with a yellow flaying ball-like thing (it was similar of Doom 2 creature which sent same balls from distance and boxing with y when near by..)
No help of running because the flying bomb followed me everywhere!!!

... and some little girls started to hit me ???
No, no I was gentleman and avoid these stupid..
I am real follower of Yoga philosophy and never wanted to kill children, even in game.

Nice game, very nice- ab. 5 hours I investigate and at last I was loosed..

Well you can kill the ghosts only with a magic weapon (weapon surrounded with a blue line), for once, as I've written further above. Just whack at it continuosly clicking as fast as you can, as it will step back after being hit press on and whack further until it's dead. Quite simple once you figure it out. If you don't hack at it all the time it will spawn the flaming skulls quickly enough and it will get difficult.

About the save game, I'm not quite sure what you meant to propose I would be doing with it. To help you with the ghost? I would gladly do that if you like some help, but first - if you run far from some certain areas and return to them monster will often re-appear there so it's of no real use that I kill that ghost, and second - it might be better for you to learn to master the combat for yourself if you intend to progress in the game further on, because it won't get really easier and you better be prepared :)

Dear Scatty,

I was just joking for our mutual game.:)
Yes, yes I like to joke. I like humor..
But when had to be serious, I am like a rock.

Game: Yes, Ich habe ein gut Clue Buch, aber ist sehr gut zu beobacten the town, walking up-down, fighting, speaking with town people, without instruction.
Ja, ja my German is sehr schlecht. aber ich liebe German people und .. ha ha.
Y'now the feeling to introduce with the game is very nice.
Of course after first days I will follow strictly the Book. I have time (Capo will wait till summer) and I enjoyed now.
One question, if you do not mind:
- Well respected Paco inform me that is possible to jump over some locked doors, if they are air open.
Pls, how to do that. I tried, tried in vain.
Well, I make one mistake: Attack the bad creature, swing some hits and run to save place (some building), creature followed me, I close the door and want to sleep to regenerate my strength.
Nein. Ummoglich. I receive message: No time to sleep now.??
So I am forced to eat some cheese or like to up my strength. And then out and meet the bad. Is this tactic stupid ?
Danke sehr, Scatty, und einschuld.. Sie, bitte.

Well you like a good advise? Let the clue book be, try to discover the game on your own. Trust me, you'll have much more fun that way. Use the clue book the second time, to see if you missed something out the first time you were playing.

I wouldn't know that it would be possible to jump over locked doors. You can, however, climb walls beside a door if the door can't be opened and you're NOT inside a bulding since you can't jump through the ceiling above your head ;)
A good example is in the catacombs you'll discover later on.

Also you can't sleep with hostile creatures nearby, kind of makes sense since they'd (theoretically) get you while you're asleep, or simply keep you from sleeping by howling or whatever :p
You can run run away something like 2 screen-length of a distance and then it will be possible to sleep, unless the monster followed you. Just run away far enough.
Gather yellow potions (heal slight wounds) or red potions (heal completely) to be able to heal yourself in critical situations where you have no other choice. Purple potions make you invincible for a short time, use the time to kill whatever you need to before they'll become able to injure you again. Also grey potions make you invisible, useful to sneak past some though monsters and avoid being attacked. You find those potions everywhere and you can often loot some of stronger killed monsters for potions, like ghosts or skeleton warriors. Keep in mind that skeleton warriors stand up after short time and you can kill them again, and they'll have again something to loot.

Report: The Keyring is found..

Q: Why some stupid small girls attacked me (6 -7)? I am just walking around with no bad intends. They, the stupid, pr. do not know I am armed and dangerous. What to do? To kill them all or avoid? Sposibo.
Q2: Some time my avatar starts to walk strange way: Like a sleep-walker?
Q3: You played The Elder scrolls- Arena?

Победа будет за нами!

Scatty 26-02-2010 05:40 PM

Where did this girl attack you? In town or outside of town, through the north gate of Tenebrae? If it's something like 4 children attacking you outside of a town in a corner between the city wall and a mountain, you can safely kill them, it's kind of a silly joke on side of game's designers. Or you can just let them be and walk away. Don't attack any non-hostile people anywhere or you're gonna be killed by Beren when they summon him.
If Avatar walks like a sleepwalker and a Burps! appears from time to time over his head he drank one over the eight, if you know what I mean. Drinking alcohol is actually funny to watch, especially after 5-6 bottles (watch that one) but has otherwise no use to the Avatar whatsoever.
Yes I played The Elder Scrolls - Arena and I also played The Elder Scrolls - Daggerfall extensively, especially the second one. Why?

yoga 26-02-2010 06:28 PM

Yes, the same 4 girls outside the town walls. OK I will finish these ones.

Elder Scrolls?
In the future I will explain in more details my Q :))

By the way I am feeling bad, robbing the poor widow of the executed man on the beach. Shame for yoga. I have now 240 Obsidian coins..
Is it time to buy some battle equipment from some smith-like man?
In this connection I have more
Q: Walkin' up-down I enter one ruined house and wow ... fall down, nearby one Troll.. Terrible I run away killing some small turtles-like creatures and right, right I find a door. Open and find nice battle Axe. Then I back and left I open one door of the room with 4-5 woman and another troll. As a fox I entered the room and very fast take a key. Then back to first place. Well, I killed the knight, small creatures, enter the first room, close the door after troll but no exit.. Sadly, I load another moment of the game..
Q2: In the palace of CT at the second floor I found a square strange thing with diagonals, thinking this is a recall pad. I walked on it, but no reaction? Am I wrong? Some where i read the lift will up-down?

Have a good time with Elder scrolls.

You will later receive something on the Plateau to teleport around, but you have to active it beforehand or else you have to walk back to Tenebrae barefoot. ^^

Well, I killed the knight, small creatures, enter the first room, close the door after troll but no exit.. Sadly, I load another moment of the game..

You actually found the Treasure Cove, a dungeon at the end of which you would have found a magic weapon, the Slayer (10% chance to kill the enemy on hit). I suppose with the knight you mean the skeleton warrior. They get up again few moments after you killed them, only two ways to kill them permanently. If I was you I would go fall down there again and look around. The room with the key was correct already, but the exit is not where you entered the dungeon. Look out for and read the books on pedestals :)

As about the obsidian coins, you'll need around 2x 666 of them (666 is the max you can have stacked in one pile) for buying few spell books later at the plateau.

Edit: also when you arrive at that point in the game, Sorcery (fire magic of the Enclave) can be pain in the arse unless you're good with small details and keep track of everything that's necessary, and there's much to keep in mind. This picture of names of the pentagram's tips is helpful when preparing the spells.

Bad day today for yoga..

Again as a bandito rob an innocent lady - some like Scarith or like - with scepter - Scimitar, money and candle..

Am i fair, noble soldier or real bandit?

First - the poor widow - so cheeky is to sleep in home of a kind person and as gratitude to take the diamonds.. more over to sale back to the mistress
Second - as a fox fast grab the key of a troll
Third - today rob the scimitar

Mama mia...
At last i did 2 stupid attempts to show 5 screenshots of Ultima 8 and fail as a real idiot.
Pls let admin delete this 2 my posts.
But i never did this operation in my life before..
They are below Scatty shots..

Ashamed, I fall down on the floor, crying loudly..

The curtain falls down.

Scatty 27-02-2010 10:20 PM

Hey, cheer up, everyone has a first time. What you can do is experiment with those screenshot links and press Preview Post under your post instead of Submit Reply, that way you'll see the results of your posting above it without actually have posted it. Useful for seeing how the final result of your post would look like. Try it that way ;)

Besides, you can edit your two posts there and insert the screenshots into them, trying as described above, so they become useful - no need to delete anything.

Yes they do, I used to install Ultima VIII earlier in German from the original CD and these kids are also there, strangely there're 7 and in English version I always encountered only 4. Some kind of joke on German censorship? :mhh:

As about the pad, it's already activated once you're near it. However it becomes only useful later, when you visit Mythran on the Plateau and he gives you the red teleportation device. Double-clicking on it will bring up a menu with already activated so far teleport pads you can teleport to.

Yeah it was mentioned also in this online conference between Origin and Richard Garriott and fans of Ultima VIII in 1994. Made him kinda pause thoughtfully.

yoga 01-03-2010 07:12 PM

Hi and SOS,

Yoga started voyage to Mythran:
-Jumped all stones across the water. In the right found 4 magic scrolls. Jumped to the land. OK. Then clump up, kill the ghoul and take a dagger and strange red-yellow spinning disk.
Well, i reached small zone with damaged winch and lever. Left two metal wired gates. In my Clue book i read two remarks for one thing but they are not clear. Allow me to quote:

Page 62
"(PL,4) Gate First, throw all levers on the far side of the rope bridge without bones in front of them. (PL,2)
Then the last lever must be thrown. " (PL,3)

Page 73
"Go to Mythran's house through cave."
.. Cross the rope bridge (PL,2)
Throw all levers without bones or sculls in front of them.
Return across the bridge and use the lever (PL,3) in small ruined building (?!) to open the two large iron gates (PL,4)...

Where I am wrong? I did both procedure, but these gates are still closed.
Throw I mean pressing the lever from me to contrary direction.
More over some times (I did many tests) the main lever ( it is before the two groups levers , left and right -each of 3 levers) thrown already?
PL=Plateau

The game is so nice, like a fairy tale..

yoga

Scatty 01-03-2010 09:48 PM

When you have used the row of levers across the bridge in the right order there'll be earthquake so you'll know when they're right. When they are, use the single lever and the gates will open. Just experiment with the row of levers.

yoga 02-03-2010 09:47 AM

Single lever You mean this one, before the 6 more?
Not broken one which is on the other side, near broken winch?

Scatty 02-03-2010 12:54 PM

With the single lever I mean the one by the chest in a ruin, before the rope bridge.

yoga 02-03-2010 04:51 PM

Theory of Probability

I experiment with the 7 levers in the ruined house about a 24 hours without result. To clear the problem, once again:

- In the ruined house we have 1 lever just after entrance. OK?
I will name this lever Front lever.
Then we have one row of 3 levers in the right and one row of 3 levers in the left. OK?
So, 1+3+3 = 7 levers.
I did the next combinations:
1. All 7 levers away from me.
2. All 7 levers towards me.
3. Right row of 3 levers away from me. Left row of 3 levers towards me. Front lever away from me.
4. Right row of 3 levers away from me. Left row of 3 levers towards me. Front lever towards me.
5. Right row of 3 levers towards me. Left row of 3 levers away from me. Front lever away from me.
6. Right row of 3 levers towards me. Left row of 3 levers away from me. Front lever towards me.
..
Another combinations are possible, but we will enter the Theory of Probability. According to this Theory, we have to speak about 7!
(!= factorial) or 6x5x4x3x2x1=720 combinations.
But I do not believe the authors will use so difficult solution.
Well, I will do once again above tests. If again fail I will rest 1 day and then...

Scatty 02-03-2010 08:40 PM

According to this FAQ / Walkthrough I linked to few pages before already, you need to press the levers that way:
Quote:

2. How do I get by those large gates (near the levers and rope bridge)?

Cross the rope bridge. There are seven levers:

L1 L2 L3 R1 R2 R3
--------C--------

Pull L2, R1, R2 (so all left levers are down and all right levers are up),
and then C will automatically pull. You'll see and feel a large shaking.
Then go back across the rope bridge. The broken lever has been fixed -
pull it to open the bars. You can then head out to the plateau.

Try it and see if that works.

yoga 03-03-2010 11:38 AM

I know, it's a real pity. Got to read everything possible on the net and some fan sites about it, but it's an unfortunate truth - the expansion pack is dead, no backup of an actually fully finished copy back then anywhere. Gotta just say - f*** the EA. Also for rushing out the following Ultima IX to be that bad instead of all the great ideas Richard Garriot had for it.

My walk through states:

@1
To get the hood, follow the dirt path back through the archway and then
head east, perpindicular to the road. You'll have to go south 5 or ten steps
too. You'll find a pit with changelings in it. At the center is an island of
sorts with executioner's hood on it.

Can not find it! Is this Hood in cemetery or outside?

@2
To get the sticks, Teleport to Central Tenebrae and head west to west Tenebrae. You'll find the sticks under a tree in the northwest area.
(15150,3050,56,39) There will be a ghost and a burnt out building nearby.
Get the sticks
.
Can not get it! I approached burned out house, enter it and uncovered a Maze. Inside I found a money bag. Out. No sticks.
I located the tree to house, clicked and clicked, no sticks.. You think is easy to find. Absolutely NO. A ghost attacked me with flying self-targeting fire bombs-sculls. Many ghouls around.

@3
Resting i made a trick and visit this Underground with trolls and magic axe. First time i was unable to leave it. Now i take the Axe, steal the key and then used Teleport device to safely return in CT>

It is require 2 ingredients Blackmore (have) + Blood (havent)

There is also blood at the cemetary. (Where? Bottle?Color?)

blood - exit West Tenebrae and go to a waterfall. Look for a cave.

Mythran Plateau is NOT West Tenebrae.

besides pile of Earth is the Blood which you search for, but Im Necromancer House should also have lots and lots of Reagents which you can take.

yoga 06-03-2010 05:04 PM

By the way I found in some of my many bags Blood so i create my first magic Open Ground and entered the Catacombs.

But now I will back to this cave (i know it and entered but nasty skeleton attacked me and i leave it) to have more Blood reagent. Right of waterfall are some more ingredients.

May i wear Ceremonial Shield from Mythran wall?

It's not a piece of equipment you can put on, it serves another purpose which you'll discover soon after you've visited the Mountain King and returned to Vividos.

yoga 06-03-2010 10:44 PM

Maybe I make fatal mistake:
- I entered UC using Open Ground magic, but without learned Death of Speak magic and no any collected reagents. After entrance I save (1).
In my back sack are: bedroll, teleport device, money bag (about 300 coins), 4 death disks, keyring with some keys, caretaker key and 1 fish only..Desperately I left the UC to learn 2-nd magic. New trouble! After me the rocks closed the entrance.. But how one may know this unpredictable fact??
Crying all the time I visited the cave under waterfall, Paco directed me and bring in my HQ (near the Recall pad in Great Palace) in CT 2 bottles of blood. Save (2).
Well, i am still able to make new Open Ground magic and Death of Speak magic, having 2 Blood bottles and 4 shards bones.
Q: From what save point to start the game?
Q2: If Yes, what reagents to prepare in my sack to avoid similar mistakes before enter again UC?

You mean you have armor only 6? You should have bought arm guards, plate mail leggings and great helmet from the smith in East Tenebrae with which you would have around 11 armor. Not that the armor class helps much in this game but it helps anyway.
And what did you mean with Armor Battle axe? :dunno:

yoga 07-03-2010 09:48 PM

Sorry, it is Arms -Battle Axe
This is the axe I token at the Slayer.. Very nice weapon..

Well, I started Save point 1 - Without abs. one reagents. Practically havent Nothing in my sack.
But before empty sack beats a hearth of lion. So I started the game entering Upper Catacombs. Now I am after the double-black-doors in Stone cave , directed to the Mountain King.
My battle tactic was : Run and no fight, instinctively understand than with armor 6 only I am a week fighter. Now my armor is 12, I have good shield, many reagents, only on the long road I loosed my money, now have 30 coins only (I hope to return back after while and find the money bag - is that possible, Scatty?)
The game is very nice..! I enjoyed..
But without kind support of well respected Paco and Scatty and 3 walk troughs i will be down.
(I loosed 2 kg, gaming 2 days non stop.. Slept 5 hours only..)

Hurray!

Depending on where you dropped it, the bag will likely be still there. On some areas however (those where reagents re-spawn if you pick some up lying aroung, leave the area and re-enter it) I think items you leave lying around disappear after a time. As there's a limited amount of bags available in the game, even if many, losing them permanently is not advised.

At last home!

Sweet home Alabama.

Status: I have Key of Scion.
Target: Shrine.

(Because I am short of money, i may again hit the road in UC.
Or goto Shrine).

yoga 09-03-2010 08:22 AM

My attempt to find my money bag during the long road in UC failed.
So i return and started battles with Changelogs, which seems to attack in series of 2 and give about 20 coins after killing. I kept about 170 coins.

What to do?
To buy some equipment and increase my current armor (12)?
Or buy scrolls and magics from Mythran?

Paco 09-03-2010 11:10 AM

I never buyed Armor and Weapon since i found all i need over Tenebrae and everwhere, but you can buy Magic Book from Mythran.

Oh also buy a Scroll to open Door. You will need it. You can drop Money and what you dont need in Mythran House. So you can always come back and get it if you need it.

I had many Bags for different Stuff.

1 Bag for mixing Reagents. 1 Bag for Potions, 1 Bag for Necromany Reagents, 1 Bag for Sorcery Reagents, 1 Bag for Air Magic, etc...

With the armor you can buy from Korrick the blacksmith in East Tenebrae + large shield you should be able to come up to armor class of 17. Later you'll find magic armor parts which can, if worn all together, increase your armor up to 25. There's also a secret (called cheat) room which you can reach through Lower Catacombs (accessible from Upper Catacombs you've been to already) where you can find almost all normal / magical weapons and armor found in the game, which is handy early on especially if you want to grab the useful fire shield (permanent Armor of Flames cast if worn). But it's a bit tricky to find.

yoga 09-03-2010 01:50 PM

@Paco
Yes, yr method of Bag's collection of a stuff is effective and I used it.
I bought the Scroll for Door opening from Mythran.

I bayed some armor from the Smith (Btw, i tried to steel some thing in Smith shop and ... ha ha was blown up by some executer) - now i reach 16.

Note: I understand the money bag loose.
I meet maybe bug problem.. Being in UC suddenly in my back sack appeared a image of environment like grey cliff, which results in decrease of used space in. Moreover if some bag is on this image, after while it disappeared.
So my 500 coins which were in the bag, which was on the image disappeared.

Maybe new sack will solve the bug.. But I must again search for new sack elsewhere. Sadly i forget where i met a sack..

Scatty 09-03-2010 02:46 PM

There IS a bug connected with carrying a backpack in the character's main backpack. Still wasn't fixed with the patch. What happened to you is exactly this bug. Don't carry backpacks in your backpack, always carry only bags and you should be fine. Don't use small boxes either to store things, they have a pretty limited space capability compared to bags. Never tried baskets though, but you can carry those in your backpack too I think.

yoga 09-03-2010 04:53 PM

Scatty, abs. true.

Pls if YOU are there tell me ASAP how, if possible, to change this DAMAGED backpack with new one which I found before Zealans doors..

BTW there is a mistake in Clue Books for UC 6 plaque
page 81 Zealans, row 3 from above:
There is stated :..plaque says Towards fare do you travel === Wrong
The right has to be ...plaque says B]The birthplace of Moriems...[/b]

no, throught the Patch the Birthplace now exist, before there wasnt...

Its the same for Sticks. Before its was just named sticks but after the Patch it got the Name "Deads Man Elbow"...

yoga 09-03-2010 09:26 PM

Sure, there is a patch for the plaque..For me this isnt problem at all.
Another non clear point.
In same page, row 9 from above stated:
..Hint: There is a dead body with a book ... Shield.
But these things were not in body, but in a new back sack in my case..
This sack I beg for help is possible to change with bugged one..

My problem was the possible change of the back sack with new one.. But..

!!This stairway puzzle make me crazy.!!
I lost 3 hours and just 1 minute to end the stupid clock jumped and disappeared..

Mates, where store the clock between the putting on relevant stair?

Never in my game life i meet such a difficult puzzle..

Wow!

I give up and goto bed to recharge..

Viva..

What do you mean with change the backpack? Is this buggy texture still in your backpack if you open it? Alas, you can't replace your main backpack with some another found one, because it is you MAIN backpack. If this bug is still there, which I can imagine is quite nasty, I only hope you still have a savegame before encountering this bug, otherwise it might mean you're stuck with it until the end of the game.

Yeah this puzzle is a bit tough indeed. I hope you also have a savegame before you messed around with the stair puzzle as it requires an untouched state for the solution. You can also simply step in the plates instead of putting the clock on them. Here's the solution:

If the westernmost (left) platform is 1, the center 2 and the easternmost (right) platform is 3, then you should stand in front of plate number 2 and pick up the clock.
Now, place the clock on the plates in this pattern: 313 212 312 321 313 212 132 312 313 212.

yoga 10-03-2010 08:26 AM

Yes, this nasty texture is always in my sack, :(
so i decide to back to saved game before disaster.

I will start with my task to collect Hood and sticks.
Well, for some time i will be busy to play again the game but the acquired experience will help me much. But I play day and night so little patience and powerful yog will back again to defeat Guardian..

Q1: Is some person in Tenebrae who will buy my collected stuff as in WoX where player may sale and buy from Smith ?

Q2: Who is the Slayer? The troll from beginning, the troll far left with the women where i steal the key or some in the coffin far right where i visited jumping on the stepping stones?

Note1: I will follow Clue Book mainly as well 3 more walk through.

Note2: Trying to solve above puzzle, I created Golem but after my order it says: Ugh and stopped. Can not helped me.

@ Paco:
After yr advise I left my 400 coins to the banker named Mythran.
He works in a stable Swiss bank..It is a joke of course..
Anyway yr advise to collect my stuff in bags is very good..
And showing me the diff. situations with shots is very nice.

Slayer is a Magic Weapon you can find in this Dungeon. you know more if you read the book in the Library.

Well there is one, the widow Rhian in East Tenebrae buys the occasional rings and gems (the non-exploding, normal ones) from you. The same one to steal jewelry from and sell to again.
Aside of her, there's nobody else in the game who buys anything from you. Guess economy is not the main strength of people there.

yoga 10-03-2010 01:10 PM

Ha ha ha

Unfortunately, boss give me to much work to do..

Rats!! The game is so Nice ..

Mates, I found a strange Death disk which refuses to explode?
It is a nice mark for some locations..

Dear and well respected Paco, may I offer a change in the Clue Book?

For example: In page 76, 12 rows from down, before entering Catacombs is ghoul and a valuable chest with magic leggings? Remember?
OK. My method is very simple and easy. No need to press trembling both mouse buttons, but simply climb up the platform and jump near ghoul - kill it and Voilaa..

Last Q: I found too much Fire gems? Are they usable?

Greetings

It works the same as Molotov Bottle. You click on it double to start it and then throw it before it explode.

Hanoi puzle

Hello,
I am on the mystery.
The aim is to make the middle pillar.

Let me clarify things:

Before me, there are three of so-called groups of ladders.
From left to right are 1, 2 and 3 group.
Each group consists of 4 ladders that rise up and down by an unknown algorithm.
For example, the ladder N 4 of group 3 is 34, similar ladder 2 from group 2 is 22, etc. Yes?

I got through the Clue book ..
31 32 12 31 23 21 31 32 12 23 23 12 31 32 12

Scatty said:

Now, place the clock on the plates in this pattern:
313 212 312 321 313 212 132 312 313 212.

Scatty shows the same numbers in another row

I did a lot of tests and sometimes watch disappears when applied.

Ok.
I place the watch onto ladder 1 from group 3. (31)
Then I take the watch and place on ladder 2 from group 3. (32).
Then I take the watch and place on ladder 1 from group 2. (12).
Correct?

No. As you can see there is no 4 in Patternnumber so this is wrong.

Caramba!!

2 hours tests and nothing!!!

I am crazy!

I put the watch on the showed ladders..
Maybe must up the ladder before place the watch on it, otherwise watch may press slightly the next ladder?
Maybe must not step even slightly on the ladder?

Rats!!

Place Clock on Plate 3 (right), then on Plate 1 (left) and then Plate 3 (right).
Plate 2 is (central). The Plates are before the Stairs (not Ladder).

This is the endresult:

Note: It is not fair to have no info Avatar must carry Cer. shield on the road..

Thanks to Golem..

@Paco
Dear and well respected Paco, may I politely disagree with Yr statement Golem is dump. I have no C. Shield with me (it is heavy and I left it in my HQ).
But thanks to Golem -it opened the required door- I found new shield and back to Ghor room..
:))

Off
(Btw my avatar in UW2 is named Paco. Everyone know the reason -gratitude).

Now I respectably has to follow my obligation after the Contract above mentioned..

Hey

Hi,
After a little problem with Google Chrome browser (now I am using Firefox) I am back.
I lost 3 days in Isle. Think that Clue Book is not so clear conc. these dialogies between Torwin, Xavier, Cyrrios and others..
Have to make Bane test. But these Aphelion, Mezosteel Pa, Ze make me little confused.. ha ha
Note: My teleport in UC does not work, so I am forced to start from cemetary building again.
Trolls are not problem for me yet. I plan to upgrade my Protector in UC entrance to...

:D

Yoga alchemist

Mates,

I need advise. I am in Library in Sorsecers Enclave and have to make spells. Around me are 2 mages, non stop speaking.
I decide to make tests here instead of carrying bunch of reagents to Bena new house.
Ok. I did first 2 spells -Estinguich and Ignite and prepare for 3-th.
Pls, tell me how spells had to be made. 3 or all 9?
YOU may PM me.

Merci.

Sorcery

Absolutely true!

It is real pain to place reagents on the right point!
Yes, I did 4 spells and fail of Armor of Flames (lost 3 hours, in vain).
So the above link has a weird words - balance the reagent on top of the candle- but I will try.
(Mates, do not use the Hint to make spells in Library. Only time loose. I lost 1 day to follow this foolush advice..Believe me).

Here i answered the respected Yosarian, conc. our conversation in ChatBox -
I said , the U8 is like a fairy tale..meaning this nice coloring and music.
Yosarian first said s(he) never played game , then said that it is terrible tale with wizards, kidnapping and so on..With all my respect I disagree politely..
Well, well I do not mean Paragraph 22
LOL

Why from time to time the game image becomes blurr? Then cleared, then again blurr? Its annoying me..

:giggles:

Well two possible reasons for that.
One is your monitor is failing you and you might want to consider to get a new one.
Another is your eyes are failing you due to being tired from too much playing, and you might consider getting a break :p

yoga 18-03-2010 11:26 AM

Hi, Skatty from Nepal

No, no
I think the blurr is game trick.
Moreover i have 4 monitors...;)
Yes. Yesterday i played the game till 4 p.m.

OK.
Now seriosly:
I met the terrible problem and I am very upset..
.. I am in Obsidian Forttress. I did all and take all required 4 symbols.. It was very hard. I remembered how avatar is transformed being in blue ball, rolling on the lava..Nice moment. I made shot..

The PROBLEM:
- I am unable to back to Arcadion (OF.2) using teleporter (OF.5)!.
Recall device doest work at all. This is not fail. This is scenario.
I go up-down the teleporter, jump, and make some action-- in vain..

I analyze all my past actions - the only difference is that I did my first test with Bena in her original house, not in Morduin house.
But if some mistake in my game, I would not enter Obsisdian door, which opened without my action but because I did 1 test correctly..

All the morning I cry and cry disconsolately.

:suspicious:

simple: You cant teleport from there. You have to go outside, since Obsidian Fortress is blocking your teleporting.

Scatty 18-03-2010 01:35 PM

But he also wrote that he can't go outside since the teleport platform between the 4 pillars doesn't work. Are you sure you have all 4 symbols with you in the backback, Yoga? Also did you charge any of those 4 blue pentagram symbols with some spell on the pentagram in that room with the crazy sorcerer who attack(ed) you? They have all 4 to be empty.

yoga 18-03-2010 08:41 PM

Ohh

I have in my sack in Obsidian Fortress:
  1. Symbol – Blue colored pentagram on gray background
  2. Symbol – Blue colored pentagram on gray background
I have no 4 blue colored symbols but 2 only? Maybe this is the reason??
  3. Symbol of Summon daemon with 1 use remaining - red colored pentagram on gray background
  4. Symbol of Bannish daemon with 1 use remaining - red colored pentagram on gray background
  5. Symbol of Flash bolt with 1 use remaining - red colored pentagram on gray background ( think i did in my 1 test) All 5 have oval – like form.
  6. Rod of Endure heat with 9 uses remaining
  7. Rod of Endure heat with 4 uses remaining
  8. Rod of Extenguish with 13 uses remaining
  9. Wand of Flash with 17 uses remaining
(think i did 6,7,8 in my tests)
  10. No charged wand
BTW, the crazy sorcerer is unmovable and safe now.
May I use this wand on the sorcerer pentagram to make new spell?
For example – The Armor of Flames? I had problem to do this spell in OF. In first stage. I did balance of all reagents on the candles as Paco advice me, but 2 hours bows were in vain. What is the reason – Candles correctly placed and lit. Reagents on candles. Rod or wand placed in the center of the pentagram.
Center? The image is in perspective, inclined view. The all thing is God will. I placed and placed and placed the rod..Pain..

Didn't you write in your post further above you have all 4 blue colored symbols already? If you have only 2 it IS the reason. You need to gather all 4 in order to be able to leave through the teleport platform in the center.

:crybaby:

Yes you can charge any uncharged symbols / staves / rods / demon heads (NO blue-colored symbols) on his pentagram. As about balancing the reagents, try to click on them to drag but don't move yet, see how a white shadow appears behind them indicating that you can drag them and then drag them VERY slowly, pixel by pixel. Try reposition them like that, often it is a matter of single pixel-relocation before a spell would be charged. Also move them as close to the tips of pentagram as possible, but watch out that they position doesn't overlap any of the candles, which would be looking as if the reagent is over a candle.

yoga 19-03-2010 09:44 AM

Yes, I did mistake with message all Blue colored symbols are collected. In fact, I have only 2 blue and 3 red symbols.
Again in lava?

Oh, mama mia..

Scatty 19-03-2010 09:49 AM

Red symbols don't play any role in the test of the Obsidian Fortress, you have to collect 4 blue symbols. So I'm afraid yes, lava is calling you :p

yoga 19-03-2010 09:18 PM

..and now the last news from BBC:

..The powerful yoga conquers Obsidian Fortress.. All 4 blue symbols and 10 of 11 magics are completed..
The people cheers..

:wall:

What? :wondering:
If you mean how to put spells on the blue symbols, you charge them the same way as all other Sorcery foci. Only that the blue symbols can cast any spell indefinitely, and that they're unstable which means every time you cast a spell of a blue symbol there's a chance it will explode instead and hurt you a bit, while it's left empty with no spell on it anymore. At which point you can charge it again with a spell.

Duel with Melchir

Situation:
- He summons 2 daemons and they all 3 attacked me very effectively.
Rats!!
I tryed some tricks : Get invisible - no effect - The attacks of this bastard Melchir hit me bad.
Drink Potions non stop. - No help.
Moreover the small battle field limits my manoeuvres.

My condition:

Str: 25
Int: 18
Dex:25
Armor: 30
Hits:50
Mana: 36
WGHT: 94
Protector
Good shield
Magic Armor, Helm and leggins.
2 invisible potions and many other potions.

Would be so kind to help:
Q:
1. To destroy first Melchir?
2. To destroy first 2 Daemons?

If case 1 - what magics, spells and so on are the best?
If case 2 - what magics, spells and so on are the best?

Rock flesh will helps?

Is this the final battle or one of final battles?

Err... didn't he say after you returned to him with the symbols that you need to cast specific spells on him, and that if you cast anything else he'll attack you (failure is death or similar)? You need to cast those spells he mentions in exact order on him, and also have Banish Demon ready beside what he mentions. Also Ignite will be useful after he takes you with him to summon Pyros, and have 1 red candle ready in backpack with you.

yoga 20-03-2010 07:38 PM

I destroyed Melchir..

Very easy.
How?

I took this special sword. Left of stairs to Melchir apartment.
This time Melchir -the idiot- killed one of the created daemon. Nice.
I created Rock flesh and used on me. Then I attacked the remaining daemon and easy finished. Save. Now I decided to back in M. apartment (it is a safe place and recharge but decided to try beat Melchir) and start battle with Melchir.

Ha, after 6-7 hits the bastard was finished. .
And my health indicator was on Max.
I think this special sword helped me much.
Because it decrease my Armor points, but when I try with Protector , which is more powerful that this special sword, Melchir killed me without problem.

So yoga defeated Melchir, as 2 years ago defeated Lord Xeen with active help of nice Paco, Scatty, Capo and Kmonster..

My deep bow and respect to these gentlemen..

How one may repay for this huge help and support?

Please, tell me, mates?

Until you have escaped Pagan you have NOT finished U8. You have still much work to do. :D

That was a good joke LOL
Malchir is not even close as dangerous as Pyros, and you've got still to defeat all 4 titans in order to escape Pagan to Britannia. Guess it was Malchir who defeated you :3:

OK, OK, dont cry, amigo..

Little rest and On the road again..

Hi,
How the Avatar opens the second guards' barrack in CT?

Scatty 28-03-2010 10:36 PM

You mean those two doors near the town gate? Climb up to the bridge above them and enter it from the second floor, the doors above aren't locked. There should be also a key somewhere on Pagan that unlocks the bottom level doors but don't ask me where. I know I have found it frequently earlier while playing through.

yoga 29-03-2010 04:31 PM

Actually i am much more forward in the game but want to know why they are closed so hard..

Well, the reasons for my long silence are two:

1- I am in the capital of BG - Sofia town. And I am forced to DL the game from my flash drive and play it.

2- I started the game about 4-5 times.
Because this game is very strict..One move in incorrect direction and you out.
The question is:
How one player will know s/he/ is on the correct path?
The answer:
Put down some money around Recall pad in Mythran house.
And after every important action, save then use Recall pad device to goto Mythran..
If you see the money, all is OK and y may continue forward.
If y dont see the money, something is wrong.
Or Mythran will not sale you the reagent required.

Had to back and find the correct point and start from this point.

Just put the money into the backpack in the backroom at Mythran in the barrel, the one which contains the magic dagger, and it will never disappear from there. No worries anymore.

AnimatedCorpse 30-03-2010 06:56 AM

Wow, I'm going to have to install this one all over again. I actually own a legit CD version which was given to me back in the 1990s by a family member. I don't think I have played it since then. I got stuck once or twice at the same spot (in the castle of some noble as I remember) and I gave up on it. This is the only Ultima game I have played on the PC, aside from a SNES game long time ago. (Not sure which one. This was nearly 20 years ago.)

yoga 30-03-2010 02:48 PM

Yes,
I climb up the 2-nd floor and I enter the barrack. Nothing interesting.
But you know the feeling when one wants to know how is that and what?

yoga 30-03-2010 08:02 PM

Dear Scatty, pls can you tell me:
-- Xavier the monk refused to accept the Foci I took from suicided son of Riah..and was stolen before..--
I bring the Foci and he answer me: What? You have not my Foci... ??!!??
?? That is not true..
I am afraid that this will remove me from the game..
Is it a fatal error?

Spasibo.

Scatty 30-03-2010 09:11 PM

Eventhough you have the focus that was stolen, he doesn't want it. He always takes YOUR focus instead, the one you had made by the smith in Tenebrae and enchanted on the altar. Kinda funny bug in the game I guess.
So if you don't have your foci with you, have them in your backpack and talk with him again. Don't worry, the stolen focus is the same so you can cast from him afterwards.

yoga 31-03-2010 10:48 AM

Mythran asks for 1000 coins for magic Devastation.
I have 300 only..
Many battles are required for this sum..
New idea?

y

Scatty 31-03-2010 03:46 PM

At the Carthax Lake teleport location, if you run a bit to the right on the upper side of the wall (north-east) there's a troll you can kill. If you leave the area through the cave near the teleport plate and re-enter it, the troll is there again. Since they drop usually much stuff and almost always around 50-90 obsidian coins you can stock up that way. Use one of the air foki to become invulnerable and the battle is easy.

Hi, Scatty,

First of all
Merry Christmas

...Well, Xavier still refuses to accept his Foci and I am very upset, because this way I am unable to continue the game..
I started the game 4 times and I am sure that I have to overcome this bug, otherwise welcome UW 2.

Christmas? :weird:
Are you sure you picked up the focus that the guy left lying behind when he ran into falling in water? Maybe dropping it and picking it up again will help? Or leave one of the foki lying on the floor and see if he takes the other one. Try with each of the two foki.

yoga 05-04-2010 11:31 AM

Xavier took the Foci

I continued my gaming and regularly visited this one. At last (he was outside the monastiry) he accepted the foci..

Maybe it's your graphics card giving up it's breath. Didn't encounter such thing ever with any Dos-games and DosBox so far, so there must be something wrong with either your graphics card or the monitor.

Capo 04-05-2010 03:31 PM

Hey Yoga, have you managed to finish the game ?

yoga 18-05-2010 12:08 PM

My fail, sorry

Hi, Capo,

Shame, real shame for stupid yoga.

(Amigo, do YOU finished Daggerfall? Ha ha)

Now seriously.

YOU, mates, know that yoga is tenacious gamer. Xeen, Ravenloft 1 & 2 , now Daggerfall showed that I have potential.
OK, I started 5 (five) times U8. I have 2 Clue books and detailed Maps. I had the valuable help of well respected Paco and Scatty. I had the all time of the world.
I strictly followed the instructions and ... nothing.
- What "nothing", stupid yog?

Yes, i reached the Pit of Dead and the game refused to create Demon and much more. The Wizard refused to instructed me without any my fail?
What to do?

- Again, stupid one!
OK. Again. Same result.
Anyway I am not beggar to whine - Pls. Scatty, pls Paco, ty Capo..

No, no bug in game. Maybe bug in yog's head. Dunno.

Well, I plan to play Daggerfall, the UW2 and maybe again start U8..

So, if forum likes stupid bulgarian yoga, let some good hearted gentleman sends this fool one correct save file let say before Pit of Dead to finish at last this nice game. I know that is non moral act and against our Gamer philosophy, but I am desperate... For first time in my game life I beg similar file. Tears in my eyes..Yes..
:crybaby:
My thanks..

grateful yoga

Excuse me dear Paco, Scatty and Capo.
My deeeeeeep respect..
:(

twillight 04-02-2012 08:39 AM

Someone could tell me how to controll this game?

I just managed to kill me right at the starting screen pushing the sleepbag into the fire, then trying to pick it up, and that sucks.

Pls don't miss to tell me how to get access to inventory!

Scatty 04-02-2012 12:08 PM

When you move the mouse towards the four edges of the screen, there will be direction arrows pointing at that direction. When you click right mouse button while it's in the position of these direction arrows, and hold it, you begin to walk, or run there as long as the mouse button is held. The further your mouse is to the edge of the screen, the faster you move.
Also the fire will burn you. Not much damage, but it adds up. You don't need to walk into fire to get something out of there (things won't burn in fire, btw.), just walk slowly a bit closer to it. Then you can left-click on things on fire, hold the mouse button and drag the thing to a different position. If you drag it too far away from your figure, it will be thrown there.

To get access to your inventory, either double-click with left mouse button on your figure, then on the backpack on your figure in the stats window that opens, or just press the I button (or was it B?).
One thing to add about the backpack - learn to micromanage it. It is very small and you'll find many things, and all won't fit into the backpack in such manner that you could see them all separately there. So you'll discover that you'll need most of the time to place things in backpack in such a way that you can see the edges, or corners of these things under another things. All you need is just to click on the edge or corner of a thing under another thing, click and drag it to another spot (in or out of backpack), or simply double-click on it to use it (if usable, but most things in Ultima VIII are).

Master, I think dear twillight problem is that he, after taking the sleep bag failed to move left but goes to fire instead.
Dear twillight, do not afraid carefully to move closer to sea, avoiding this way fire. You may, you very good gamer. Then hit west and voilaaa.
Nice game but stupid yoga can not pass The Pit of Dead.

That one is a very large, complex area. No possible way to simply guide you through it to the point.
Basically you have to move and move, going and jumping past an area with columns and grid gates on tiny islands between sea of lava, all the time orienting yourself on the south-west direction I think. When you arrive at big ruins with large closed gates at either side, with few skeletons waiting to chop you in pieces, and kind of a hall behind those gates with wooden benches inside, that's where Lithos's heart is located.

:OK:
Dear Master, I did not enter The Pit even.
Before The Pit I realized terrible fact that the magician who play very important role in gaming no more responding, making this way any progress unnecessary.
Something in all my 6 attempts was totally wrong. ?????
Hope you understand my dilemma?
This is the reason to beg for help (let say some save file of this point).

Really I will never forget the moment when poor yoga is rolled within sphere on the lava field. Nice moment i did many times. ha ha ha

Hi, all,

There is a problem with U8:

- Speaking with the first Acolyte named Bane (woman -daemon crag)) during the conversation the game stopped and returned to DOS with the next Error message:

HALTING IN FILE YAMM.C , LINE 131
PROGRAM HALTED BY CODE.
REST, AVATAR, YOU WILL NEED IT!

C:\U8>_

I started again, same result.

Important info:
This is not my original desktop PC, but friend's laptop Toshiba with good characteristics.
Moreover I simply copied the folder U8 from my PC and pasted here on Toshiba laptop, which is hmmm.. not very clever idea.
No installation as have to be.

No music and FX effects at all.

Where i am wrong?
To DL and install correctly the game on friend's PC?
(But i dunno make any records to this PC, if possible)
And then add Save files?

TY for your help and time.

yoga the avatar:D

Scatty 30-04-2012 06:17 PM

Well if you copied Ultima VIII folder over from your other pc, check if you copied everything so no file is missing, because the error you keep getting each time might be just because of that. Especially important that you copy the savegame folders entirely, any single file from there missing - good-bye savegame.
Otherwise just install the game on that notebook again and copy the savegame folder over, maybe that will help.

Edit: as for the no sound and/or music, try running setup/install program and set the correct parameters again. Of course I assume you play U8 in DosBox, which you absolutely should.

Solved, Master Scatty, done!

I instaled the game ver. 2.12.1 (Caro Capo asked for gold version but i have no idea) on this notebook, started install.exe, showed the correct directory and Sound Blaster for Sound and FX, added the last save file and voilaaaa!
Dos-Box 074 of course.

Ty, v.much!

Now the brave get the first test for Acolyte for minute. Have to create 3 wands or rods - Flash, Flame bolt and Endure heat spells. Done with pleasure.

Master, do You start your jorney for Chomalungma?

This game and Xeen World were my bigest challenges.
Actually i played U8 from 2-3 years till finished.
Now yoga will relax for a while and again..

:OK:

In some next posting i will try to explain why failed so much. The game is not difficult at all, no freezes, OK for music and FX, just toooooooooooooooooo much stuff to carry.

True, the game requires a lot of inventory micromanagement. Tiny corners of items lying under other items, moving items around in the backpack etc.
Well done Yoga.

Thank YOU, Master, your words mean much to me.

Why yoga failed so much times?

Because he was not so smart and trying to see everything, to have everything ( in fact i was too curious) and he do not followed the main line of the story. As You know even Tenabrae is one town only, the world of Pagan is large enough. So i lost the right line and failed at last.
Anyway, the game is very nice after UW2.

Thank You Paco for courage and support in Pit of Dead.
