On a whim I decided that I would like to remix Verdi's requiem mass and the benny hill theme. However I couldn't get goldwave to run them one over the other. So does anyone know if you can or if there is a program I can download to achieve this truly different song

No free programs pop in my head, however you can easily achieve this using Fruity loops, Reason, Cool edit or similar programs...

Try running MOD TRACKER. I believe you can turn each track into a sample and layer them side by side. I've been using the program for 3 years now to produce music, its an excellent free program. You can utilize something like 128 channels depending on how you set it up.
