I don't remember too much about this game. What I do remember though is that the player controlled a trading ship and had to fly between various planets, buying and selling goods. There were different alien races and random events that could happen to you between the planets.

Really vague, but I wouldn't consider Elite since different alien races was a characteristic.

This could also be Escape Velocity or one of the sequels.
