UU: Stygian Abyss - dosbox settings?

Does anyone have any idea how to run Ultima Underworld: Stygian Abyss (or Labyrinth of Worlds for that matter) in Dosbox so it doesn't look and feel like ass? I mean, I can get it working, but it's horribly slow and the lag while moving around in that damn tiny screen is driving me bonkers. I've tried messing around with CPU and frameskip settings and I can get it a BIT better, but not nearly enough to make it playable.

The official .pdf to run Daggerfall (with the recent free release) had a whole bunch of Dos commands to enter and weird settings to mess with in the configuration files, and it runs pretty good, so it must be possible with UU, right? I've checked the various dosbox faqs and guides on here but I just can't work out exactly what I need to do for finetuning.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :(

IIRC, I just upped the cycles a lot, until it wasn't too jerky.

The game wasn't the most fluid of experiences even back in the day though.

The walking/running isn't like most games, you'd never feel quite the same floatiness that you get with a lot of 3D games. There was a definate acceleration as you walk/run, which can feel wierd.

Looking around should be more fluid though.

Not sure that'll help you much though!

Are you on the latest version of DosBox? I've only used 0.72 with UU, maybe the newer version is better?

In the config file put cpucycle to max, that should do the trick.

I think the concern there would be the small viewscreen, given the rather large border and controls/character info on the right hand side of the screen.

Poor design really, these days we have very minimal HUD info.

Well according to the wiki of UU, the small window was a must back then, because performance was horrible in fullscreen back those days. The engine was pretty demanding. Although I really like to have my inventory always visible for quick equipment changes.
