Has anybody here who downloaded DOSBox and/or VDMSound experience any viruses or problems to their PC? I'm making sure of this before I download because I don't want my dad to find out about this because he said "Download at your risk, but I won't repair the PC if it breaks down". Plus can I put my DOSBox folder in another folder like for example: C:/Ian/DOSBox ? I'm also wondering if DOSBox or VDMSound will run well in our PC which has these specs:

A Pentium 4 2.0 GHz Processor
40GB Hard Disk
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 400 with 64 MB
256MB Memory

Be careful about where you download games from, however. Some sites out there don't maintain even most rudimentary virus checks, and a few may even attempt to infect your machine with malware.

I'm just going to add a bit to the question.

i just finished upgrading my computer. Since it has a few glitches under Win98 (like wake up from standby mode doesn't work propperly) i was wondering if i should install win 2000. But now i heard win xp also supports fat 32. so my questions are:

If i install winXP and fat32 can i still run dos games in dos mode with no problem?
If i decide to install NTFS (is that the other partition type?!) i will probably need dosbox. Do dos games still have issues with it? What about AMD processors? Do they cause any problems with DOS games?
What about games that ran under win 98 and 95 ? how is that issue resolved in XP? i know some of them don't work in Win 2000.

About Win 95/98 games, there could be some trouble, depending on each game. Some of them you can just set compatibility mode and they'll work fine, but another ones doesn't run at all, even with compatibility mode. For these games (like Enemy Infestation, I had a really annoying problem with video) I use Microsoft Virtual PC. I created a virtual machine (that's for what the program serves), a virtual hard disk, installed Win 98 on the virtual HD, and then installed the game from inside the virtual machine. Then it worked really smooth. :ok:

If you have a low amount of ram though. Virtual PC runs very slow.

It's AMD Athlon 64 3800, 1 GB RAM (no dual channel cause it's only 1 stick), some asrock mobo that has 2 ATA plug ins for my older hard disks .

Some games run better in vdms and others in dosbox.
I have Problems with the Dune 2 mod Superdune in dosbox and vdms...

Yeah I was trying to play a copy of Dune 2 I borrowed but I was only borrowing it for 2 days so after 2 hours of trying to get it to run I just could not be stuffed.

Win95/98 were only a graphical interface on top of a DOS v7 operating system so no wonder they were DOS compatible, but they were buggy and not only in your machine. After having used Win98 for many years I can't believe MS had the nerve to charge for it. WinXP on the contraty is a decently working system (in my limited experience) based on WinNT, not DOS, so that's why there's no so-called "DOS mode".
