Here is the question:Is temple of elemental evil abandonware because it is free for download on gamespy(and they are good site) if it is can you put some bigger(newer) games for download.

I dont say that oldies are bad(they are even better from many new games) but if big game is abandonware can you put it for download :kosta: :kosta: :kosta:

I believe that Temple Of Elemental Evil came out a year or two ago, unless games are are 5 years old (and not being sold) or have been released as abandonware by their copyright holders they are not abandonware and so cannot go on Abandonia. Plus, it's probably too big for the general site.

But maybe the game was so crappy so they abandoned it.
Why else it free.
And also the game Strasiege:tribes what about that, it is also free and came out last month.

Then why don't you download it from GameSpy?

I would rather believe that it's the demo version there, than that they offer a newly came out, still sold almost everywhere game...

It propably is,
No reason why Troika would have abandoned it.

Maikel 09-11-2004 07:44 AM

It's to big, and it's not DOS . The latter reason is less strong lately, but the first is still in full effect ;)

Milos 09-11-2004 10:28 AM

I can't download it because registration is required.(it says full game)

I know that is not crappy I played it, but maybe those who made it maybe think so.

Anyway never mind

Wael 09-11-2004 11:43 AM

Looked into it.

The Possibility comes available,
if you subscribe to some of the services /clubs/ offered by gamespy.

Itīs not free.

Troika and gamespy have (supposedly) made a deal,
in which either,

1. GSpy has offered money to troika in exchange for this service.

2. Troika gets part of the profit from the subscriptions

So itīs not,
Abandonware

But no harm done in asking

Just to point out that there is a distinct difference between abandonware and freeware.

When a copyright holder releases a product of theirs on the internet for free download (like for example GTA, B-17, Betrayal at Krondor, and Hidden&Dangerous), the product becomes freeware. This is what Temple of Elemental Evil in the original post would have become, had it been released by Troika. Which is not the case.

However, Abandonware is by no means free. Sharing and downloading abandonware games on the internet has not been allowed by their copyright holders. Abandonware is a term coined some 5+ years ago for games that have been discontinued by their makers and are thus no longer available for purchase. This is why it's morally justifiable to launch a site such as Abandonia to share those games, as it does no harm to the sales of their makers.

Also, there are many definitions for abandonware. Personally, I believe a game gets abandoned only once it's no longer globally available. If you can buy it from a webstore, then do so. The retailers need the income. However, if the game is only available in a small corner store in Burundi that has no website, it's been pretty much abandoned and I feel no guilt in downloading it. (EDIT: unless I lived close to that corner store, of course.)
