D-Fend Reloaded
 

Anyone used this and got any thoughts about it..?

I never use a front end....... but it seems it can help people that aren't able to input some 5-10-15(?) keystrokes to launch a game.

That's the way the world is, they hit their keyboards a 100,000 times a day on all kinds of chatsites, but some keystrokes to launch a game...? OH NOES!!!!

I actually think it may be more effort and hassle to use this than Dosbox...

I use both D-Fend Reloaded and Dosbox to play my games. D-Fend Reloaded is definitely a good program for the following reasons.

1. If you have children (or in my case a younger brother) who like to play dos games, but can't use a command line.

2. D-Fend Reloaded creates a .conf file for each game you add to it, so you can play each game with different dosbox settings. This is useful for games that need different cpu settings or graphic settings to function correctly.

3. It's good for people who have no idea how to use a command line.

4. It helps organize all your games in a nice GUI.

So it does have its uses, but like you said, it is a hassle to set up sometimes. Also, certain games don't run in D-Fend Reloaded, yet those same games run in dosbox. I like using dosbox personally, but I do know that D-Fend Reloaded does have its uses.

Its also good for those people who didnt grow up in the dos era or dont know how to use dosbox.

I didn't grew up in the 'dos' era, there simply wasn't a 'dos' era when I grew up, in fact there even weren't personal computers ....
And I don't need a front end to use dosbox.

People can learn you know .... or it seems you don't know that fact.

Another fact is that dosbox is extremely simple to use, certainly much easier then it ever was to use dos on real hardware.

I said the same thing - about not needing a front end - on the D-Fend facebook page (where I learned of this) and the guy deleted it.
What I don't get is that Dosbox has this drag n drop method and there's also other things like Norton Commander that do the same job.

I think that for people who can't be bothered to learn NuDos (and it is loads easier than MSDos and all the crap you had to do to get atapi/oaksys/whatever CD-drive to work. Not to mention soundcard/memory/the rest) this is good.

Kids learn very quickly so, if you give them dosbox, they'll probably surprise you and learn it better than you could in the same time.

It's no wonder kids today are so r-tarded if people keep giving them GUI's to do everything for them.
My godson is banned from using this software and if he ever wants to uninstall something from Windows:

He has to do it manually and clear out the registry himself.

Maybe I should elaborate a tad more I was talking about People who were not alive during the late 1980s to the mid 1990s. Very true that dosbox is alot simpler to use than actual dos due to the fact that you do not have to worry about installing any drivers. Yes people can learn to use dosbox I realize that I was just saying that a front end is a good start for those people who are confused on how dosbox works there are people out there who fall in that category.

I always hated memory management in DOS, and having a gazillions autoexec.bat depending on the memory requirement of each game... :(

The only problem is, Fender, is that if people don't start to use the original and just the front end -

people will end up not knowing how to use the original and only the front end.
They still have to learn to do that. I managed to learn Dos in the 80's when I was a kid. No-one insulted my intelligence until windows 98 came out.

So long as the people who use the front ends keep earning money, though - I'm perfectly happy to fix their originals and stuff when they break them through the front end. :D

You can charge quite a bit for some people.
It makes up for all the people who don't get charged a penny.
