If anyone manage to get these cheats to work; http://www.megagames.com/megacheats/C/pc-627.shtml

then please post a response here or PM me.

Luchsen 09-01-2009 08:08 PM

Working. And now?

MrDeadly 14-01-2009 05:32 PM

I edited the files with Notepad but could'nt find where I was suppose to change stuff. How did you do it Luchsen?

Luchsen 14-01-2009 10:44 PM

 With a hex editor like it's meant to be done. I love notepad, but it can't do everything. ;)

MrDeadly 16-01-2009 12:31 AM

Thanks! I have no idea about such things so.. yeah :amused: But I'll try this program and I'll learn something new.

The Fifth Horseman 16-01-2009 04:21 PM

You'd be surprised how many old games can be modified using a hex editor. It's fun. :)

Re: I can't get the game to work

Hey, I really need help.

I just downloaded Cold Dreams, and followed the instructions on how to run the game. However, when I tried to start the game, I got an error:

Then I tried to copy the files "introtx1.dat", "win1tx1.dat", "win2tx1.dat", and "win3tx1.dat" files to the folder where the game is in. I then get another error message:

What do I do now? How can I get the game to work? Can anybody help me please?

Thanks.

Luchsen 08-04-2009 08:17 PM

You should upload your images to ImageShack, for example, or attach them to your post (see the Additional Options beneath the text editor).

Lingyan203 08-04-2009 09:19 PM

I uploaded my images to Flickr.

Here's the first error message:

It seems to me that you've either not mounted the iso correctly or tried to
run the game using the normal .exe file. Use the "Runme" file for an english run or you'll get a similar message. If this doesn't help I'm all out of ideas.

Lingyan203 22-04-2009 12:06 AM

Re: Game runs perfectly.

It works fine. Thank you very much for your help. :)

BTW, after I complete each episode, at the end of the final intermission text, the text is in German. How do I get it to display the text in english?

After mounting the iso start the game from your virtual c drive NOT d.
c:\coldream -> runme.bat

Doesnt work!

Hey there!
I hope you can help..

Ive read the posts in this thread and I tried everything but always when im trying to start the game I get the screen with the cold dreams logo in the background and in the foreground "Bitte Starten Sie das Spiel von der CD".
I also tried this in a virtual machine with windows 95 as operating system but it simply doesn work!

Do you know a solution like a total description what to do with the files and what to do with dosbox for getting it to run or a proper download location or something?

Please... I wanted this game for ages...

Perhaps we should ammend this in the review..?

Somewhere a bit higher up than the very bottom of a very lengthy, bulky review, perhaps?
I would read it, because I read. But there's no white space and it looks challenging (maybe that's why I read it?) so that could put people off from getting to the "How to Work this Game" bit.

And include mounting instructions for every game that needs it that doesn't already have it put as easy to understand, as Luchsen has presented it above?
I don't mind doing some gopher work.

Cos people don't really read the dosbox for dummies thing. They only use the forum from the games discussion post.
Granted, it may be that they'll discover the forums and then start using them... But idk.

Even if someone was just out to get the game and didn't read the review, they may check out the game page as it'd be their first link to where they got the game from - us.

Maybe they won't press the back button, but if they want to go into the discussions to ask, there's a chance they'd look at the whole page and see their solution first.

This would mean we'd have to read less game disussion threads every day. Especially if there's a redirect to troubleshooting forum...
It's hard to tell whether a post could be just "nice game", experiences, problems or anything.

It may not be ideal for getting people into the forums, but it'd be useful for the users that just come here for games and less work for us.

SonicTTH 24-08-2009 11:45 PM

@ Luchsen:
Thank you. I allready tried this.

This turns out the error message ''file introtx1.dat does not exist".

What I noticed is in the runme.bat:

append c:\coldream\english

this couldn work out, because drive c is the directory whichs contains the runme.bat, theres no further coldream folder in it but he english folder is there. So when I changed that line to:

append c:\english

this does work out.

Anyways, does anyone know where i can get the german language files?

That's why you should mount C: the path to the directory coldream and not the directory coldream itself.

They are on the CD image CDREAM1.ISO.

Who wrote that batch file, btw?

In addition to this obvious nonsense, DOSBox batch files should always be named DOSBOX.BAT.

Luchsen 25-08-2009 01:48 PM

To play from HDD:

Copy the directory COLDREAM from the CD image to the HDD. Copy the language files from the archive directory ENGLISH into the copy of the directory COLDREAM or rename the German ones there (they are [...]TXT.DAT instead of [...]TX1.DAT).

>mount [x] [path to directory COLDREAM]\coldream -t cdrom -label COLDREAM
>[x]:
>cold

The copy protection is a CD check which looks after the CD label, therefore the parameters.

All these later posts totally went by me, sorry folks, I've been very busy. Great job answering them Luchsen, you've done way better then I could have.

I did the mount on the DOSBox successfully ,but when I typed "runme" it saied " Illegal command ". hw can I fix that?

The Fifth Horseman 23-10-2011 12:26 PM

DOSBox doesn't start in Secure Mode by default.
Are you using a frontend?

It called D-fend something, but I deleted it already and installed DOSBox 0.74.
Now I got another problem, when I type 'cd coldream' it says UNABLE TO CHANGE...' what can I do?

The subdirectory you're trying to change to does not exist where the command line currently is.
What commands did you enter after starting DOSBox? Did it give you error messages when entering them? Screenshots would be best.

I don't really know how to send you this screenshot...

The Fifth Horseman 23-10-2011 02:27 PM

Imageshack. :p

roman1205 23-10-2011 02:45 PM

I am not following you, I am not really a computer guy. Is this some sort of a program?

The Fifth Horseman 23-10-2011 03:05 PM

http://imageshack.us/ Upload the screenshot from your computer there, and the site will give you a link to that image. Then post that link here. :)

roman1205 23-10-2011 03:34 PM

Here it is: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/204/problemjg.png/

The Fifth Horseman 23-10-2011 04:01 PM

Are you sure you're not accidentally trying to enter the very directory you have mounted as the virtual C drive?
In other words, is there a colderam inside coldream inside coldreams on your C drive on your actual machine?

roman1205 23-10-2011 04:16 PM

Yea, it goes like c:\coldreams\coldream\cdream1.iso
ohhh and 1 more thing, when I try to delete the CDREAM1 file it says that it is used by some other program (not the DOSBox).

DarthHelmet86 23-10-2011 04:22 PM

I would just like to point out that in that image you spelled coldream wrong (colderam).

Also you cant mount an ISO like that. But I will let Fifth explain that one or link you to a tutorial.

roman1205 23-10-2011 05:02 PM

Well, even when I type it right I still got the same problem...

Right in your case would be:

mount c c:\coldreams\
c:
cd coldream

An ISO image isn't a directory. You can't enter into it with the cd command.
After you mounted the image using IMGMOUNT the way you did it, its' contents are under the D drive in DOSBox if your goal is to access them.

Quote:

ohhh and 1 more thing, when I try to delete the CDREAM1 file it says that it is used by some other program (not the DOSBox).
If it's IMGMOUNTed in a copy of DOSBox and that is running at the time, then it is used by DOSBox. Otherwise you could have accidentally mounted it in Daemon Tools, VirtualCloneDrive or a similar program you have installed.

roman1205 23-10-2011 05:49 PM

And 1 more thing, when I type 'd:' instead of 'c:' the command 'cd coldream' works fine (but the 'runme' still doesn't work).

roman1205 23-10-2011 05:52 PM

You were correct. I really did used it on Daemon Tools.
Thanks.
At least 1 problem solved...

The Fifth Horseman 23-10-2011 05:53 PM

Most likely there's no "runme" file there.
Enter this command to see what files _are_ there:
dir /p /w

roman1205 23-10-2011 06:19 PM

I entered what you said and it gave me this:
D:\COLDREAM>dir\p\w
Directory od D:\P\.
File \p\pw.* not found.

The Fifth Horseman 23-10-2011 06:37 PM

No, you entered it completely wrong. Backslashes are not equivalent to slashes, and spaces must separate arguments from each other.
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/543/dosbox005.png/
Note the forward slashes and spaces.
This generates a listing of what is in the current directory. /w makes it display multiple files per row and /p makes it wait for a key press if there are more results that can fit on one screen. Like this:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/705/dosbox006.png/
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/15/dosbox007.png/

roman1205 23-10-2011 09:46 PM

Ok, now I had done it right but I got something else, not like in your screenshot.
Take a look:http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/191/unledszk.png/

The Fifth Horseman 23-10-2011 10:18 PM

It's not the same thing as in my screenshot, but it's the same kind of result (if that makes sense to you). :)
Now you should be able to start the game after entering:
cd Coldream
runme

roman1205 24-10-2011 08:19 AM

When I enter runme (after I entered "cd coldream" and "dir /p /w") it still types ' Illegal command ' . I am a bit confused =\
And here is the screenshot just in case:http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/13/unledsjk.png/

The Fifth Horseman 24-10-2011 11:22 AM

Whoops, my mistake. You didn't have to enter cd coldream , just runme.

roman1205 24-10-2011 05:14 PM

Nuh, it still types illegal command. =)
And when I type "start", it says :"introtx1.dat does not exist".

The Fifth Horseman 24-10-2011 05:50 PM

I'm braindead, someone shoot me. XD Confusing everything everywhere today.
Either setup.bat as shown in your screenshot. XD

OR

cd coldream
dir *.exe /w
dir *.com /w
dir *.bat /w

See what (if any) file names are given by those commands and then try to run them. :)

dosraider 24-10-2011 06:29 PM

Pffff... Fifth ... Fifth you're on mushroom smoking or what ....????
The game isn't launched from D: but from c:\coldream\ in dosbox.

Full syntax to launch in his case:

mount c c:\coldream\
imgmount d c:\coldream\cdream1.iso -t iso
c:
runme

But I doubt the game can run correctly directly from C: , thinks it must be launched from C:\coldream\ , with the correct folder structure

I begin to think he screwed up his folders, he should redown eventually and start over from scratch, would be the best solution to solve this complete mess.

He should unzip the whole thing in c:\dosgames\ so that in windows he gets :
c:\dosgames\coldream\
His correct syntax is then:

mount c c:\dosgames\
imgmount d c:\dosgames\coldream\cdream1.iso -t iso
c:
cd coldream
runme

roman1205 24-10-2011 07:27 PM

The only command that works is the " dir.exe ", and thats what I got:http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/5/unlediaf.png/
I tried to run cold.exe or just cold but it keeps typing me:"File introtx1.dat does not exist! ".

Delete your stuff, redownload, unzip the coldream folder to c:\dosgames so that in windows you get c:\dosgames\coldream\
launch dosbox and:

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH ALL! =)
everything works fine!
I really appreciate all your work guys! And Dosraider, I don't hate you. Not at all.
I think the problem was that I typed : mount c:\dosgames\coldream
instead of c:\dosgames.

Again thanks alot everyone!

I learned about this game a while ago, but initially was not able to locate the shareware version(s) which was (were) known to exist from various sources. However, recently with the help of Hallfiry's magazine coverdisk catalogue two shareware versions were found:Both are English versions and appear authentic. The intro text is different from Juergen Hoffmann's version.

The shareware releases (repackaged) can be downloaded here: v1.05, v1.06.
