Really? would they?
I say if the G8 does decide to do all those things it will simply send a message of "the ball is in your court" to the governments of these impoverished countries. Many of these countries are usually entangled in a pointless war, or a civil war. Cancelling debts will not stop the use of child soldiers, in the worst case scenario it'll only make it easier for the government to purchase better weapons for these child soldiers... heartwarming.
And all these aid efforts to renew agriculture will be executed by the UN (if at all) because those corrupt governments usually don't live the finger, they just wait for the money to roll in. Any resistance to these governments (usually by guerillaleaders who only have their own best interests in mind and who are prone to use child soldiers) are dealt with using an iron first, causing more death and destruction, resulting in the situation not improving one bit. And all the Bob Geldof's in the world won't be able to stop that.

I can't see things so pessimistic. I want to think that there's more reason in people's heads than you say there is. Of course that this event won't make all the negative things go away, but it sure will help in some way. It doesn't and couldn't get any worse than this.

Sorry to rain on your party, but things are rarely optimistic in African Politics. I am not a pessimist, I'm a realist.

As I demonstrated, it can.

I was going to watch it on tv. The company I work for owns the tv station that shows it today, but the other phone company hosted it on it's broadband, which happens to be in my house. They decided to be arseholes and rift the contract, just before the concert :ranting:

Stupid house-company using the broadband :wall:

You did, but it's just a possible sequence of events. and an unfortunate one, too. Let's hope you're wrong.

As long as people will care about Africa once in a while, and forget about it ASAP so they can worry about their sorry little problems (like how am i gonna dress for that benefit show ?) the world will go astray. And worshipping a group of overpaid undereducated so-called rock-stars who generously give 15 minutes of their precious time for free won't help either. Mass revolution or nothing. I'm french, we were there a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...
