Review and Download (if available)

BranjoHello 08-05-2008 12:07 PM

I think that it is impossible to find perfect version of this game, I played this one that is directly available for download and full version that is available at ISO Cellar topic but game works fine only first time you start it, every other time it has various bugs but mostly their related to the News section of the game.
Or maybe my computer just don't like to have Holiday Island on it's HDD. :D

Aye, It seems whatever device plays the news files and displays that aspect of the game does not agree with windows XP. I have not found a suitable workaround.

holiday island fix- fully playable

I got annoyed with the german error messages, so I had a look at the DAT files and found errors in the file "Holiday\DATA\FILENAME", all you need to do is delete the spaces between the file names and the extension.

so
xxxxxxx .bmp
xxxx .bmp
becomes
xxxxxxx.bmp
xxxx.bmp

This won't correct old savegames, you will need to start a new game and turn off speech (I also had music turned off, not sure if that makes a difference).

You can now play the game fully with new buildings becoming available and auctions for attractions and historic sites e.t.c.

The problem with speech is probably to do with a similar DAT file, but I haven't looked into it yet.

I have emailed the abandonia staff with this info and details of a possible cheat I stumbled upon while checking the DAT files, so maybe the offending file will be replaced with a corrected version soon.

thanks for the headsup. pity the ftp server is temporarily down, remind us when all things get back to normal

corrected file download

This will make it easier, I have attached the corrected version of the file.
Just replace the old one with this and you're ready to go.

I have just noticed that .DAT files are not allowed as attachments, so I've uploaded it as a .TXT file, you will need to open it in a text, editor save it as "all files" with "FILENAME.DAT" as the filename.

still having lots of problems, cant get new buildings to appear despite trying everything on this list. also get error files when doing sabotage and such ... help!

laiocfar 30-07-2008 05:31 PM

There are some problems with sound. To play the game on win98, i remember that i must disable voices(Midi) because it will hang at tv news screen. That screen pop up when new buildings get available or when you perform sabotage operations.

Hope that it helps

Please, don't just post "helppp" like that. Even with a quotation, we have no chance whatsoever to figure out what the problem is, why you want help.

Do yourself a favour and post why you need help. Any info is valuable, such as error messages, exactly how you went about to try to run the game, anything you can think of that will enable us to help you.

To make the game experience better, you should:

- Edit FILENAME.DAT in DATA folder. mick.tripp has explained very clearly.
- Go to Options in the game, then turn off Speech sound before playing. Also, in News section in Options, turn off Sabotage & New Properties. This will help reduce duplicate pop-ups.

I also have met "MCI error", but you can prevent it from happening by turning off Speech.

Try & you'll feel more satisfied.

P.S: Sorry for my English. I'm from Southeast Asia.

Hello,

i found another solution for the mci-problem. There is a plattform to talk about games, but it is in german (because i am from germany). There is one patch postet for both problems:
this is the page: http://www.spieleforum.de/thema/71628-4.html
and this is the patch, which is in english: http://www.spieleforum.de/attachment...7&d=1165953328

You just have to install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) before - if it isn't.

The problem with the mci is that there are soundfiles which you and also the programm can't start. The consequence at my pc was that new bulidings where announced but i couldn't find them afterwards. So the patch changes this soundfiles with a running 0-byte-soundfile (if you want to change the files on your own, you can find them in the directories "Sprach1", "Sprache2", "Sprache3" - if you try to start them, the media-player will return an error message)

Perheps, that this patch doesnt get lost, somebody should upload it to this plattform?

And now the obligatory "sorry for my english, i am from..."

Thomasfromgermany 09-09-2009 08:42 AM

if you start the patch (the jar-file) the programm asks you to browse the holiday-island-folder. You have choose the holiday.exe - now - the programm knows also the folder.

i should explain how you have to use the program:

1. unzip the 3 files
2. start holidayislandfix.jar
3. browse the holiday-island-directory (concretely browse the holiday.exe)
4. browse any soundfile for the change - the program delivers one - you can use it - it is very small
5. press the butten "replace 0byte wav files" to patch the mci-problem
6. press the button "fix graphic..." to patch the 8-letters-problem

once more the link to the patch:

I know the fix to this game. a bit lenghty not that much, but could take nearly 5 mins... Anyone interested ???

Ahwell, as I have some free time:

http://i.imagehost.org/t/0322/iviewc...e_21_57_13.jpg

Advisable is:
Get the CD image
Allow VfW (video for windows) to install in dosbox/W3.X
All works fine, intro/outro movies, sounds/music, news, etcetera etcetera... blah blah blah.

Not irritating you my friend. i mean i am really asking. now as i have installed win3.11 on dosbox and did also the sound blaster. problem is with the vga. currently running at ET4000 640x480 16 colors. cant run holiday island. black screen with some german error in it. and i got the cd image although its in german. i also have fixed this version of the game which other sites are providing like 5 Megabytes of zipped holiday island. you know what i mean. but i wanted to run it in dosbox and on win3.11 and also love to install windows 95 on the dosbox and then trying the holiday island game on it.....So what's the solution for my vga currently in dosbox for win3.11...thanks....

Run setup again from the dosprompt ( windows dir) and select:
http://h.imagehost.org/t/0728/iviewc...e_00_16_12.jpg <- click

Of course you will need the S3 drivers from that vogon link.

That or 1024x768.... what you want.

i am tryin lately but no response. always windows cannot support this mode. or at some other drivers win3.11 hangs...oh yes.....the links arent working at the vogon site by the way......tell me in detail if there's some more tweaking inside the configuration file of the dosbox.......

dosraider 07-06-2010 11:06 PM

You change the setup options in dos? NOT whilst in Win3, W3 never liked that, even in the ol'days.
Also read the 'troubleshooting' section in the Vogon topic, it's described what to do if you run into problems as you have now.

Dosbox 0.74 is running on the default conf file, only added the automount for my w3 virtual drive and path settings under [autoexec]
(I don't use the same virtual C for Dosgames and W3)
To load the win3 conf I created a new dosbox shortcut, duplicated the dosbox conf to win.conf and pointed dosbox to the according Win3 conf file.
Something like this:
D:\Dosbox\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe -conf d:\dosbox\dosbox-0.74\win.conf

You will find the S3 drivers in the second post of that vogon topic (Dosfreak's post), I used 'S3 Trio/64 v1.41B5 (S3 Vision 64 or Vision864) ' from gulikoza, link works fine.

A propos, there is a readme file in the holiday folder:
Quote:

In order to run, Holiday Island must have a graphics driver
which supports a minimum of 256 colours. Check further details
in either your graphics card's manual or in the next section.
Holiday Island runs under Windows in all resolutions with at
least 640x480 pixels.
We recommend that the game is first started at 800x600
supporting 256 colours.
640x480 16 colors won't work.

NEVER change the screen setup whilst in W3, believe me, even on 'real hardware' it causes disasters, do it from the dosprompt, NEVER in W3, we had enough crashes in the ol'days.

do a 'cd windows'

BTW, if you got it all working swell, now it's time to backup the virtual C where you installed W3, so if you completely screwup something it's simply a matter of copying the backup to get a working W3 again.

yeah you're right... i got the right drivers now and its working....currently tried 640x480 with 64k large fonts and 800x600 with 64k colors large and small fonts..all modes working....but 1 thing is holiday island is lagging...not that much that u cant play it evenly....but sometimes when you;re loading a saved game or starting a new map, the time between generating the map or loading it, the music lags for a microsecond, and also mapping around in the game is not that much smooth than what i am having in XP MODE through windows 7.....any ideas???

You're still on dosbox 0.73 I believe?
Update to 0.74
Kill everything that's running on the background and isn't really needed (I mean EVERYTHING)
If it still lags, you're on a crappy PC or your Windows is lame. XD

As last ressort:
-> kill the music ingame, can help sometimes.
-> change output= .... in dosbox conf file
-> read the dosbox tutos.

Copy the whole virtual C on a USB key? Burn the stuff on a CD? Copy to a 'backup' folder? And eat some vegies, that is always helpful.

system is core 2 quad q6600 @ 2.4GHz, 3GB DDR2 RAM, 512MB VGA...windows 7 ultimate....ok i'll try....downloading dosbox v0.74...

dosraider 08-06-2010 12:24 PM

Your system should be sufficient to run it nicely.
Do you mount the CD image with imgmount directly in dosbox?
(look at the pics I posted earlier, I'm kinda tired of repeating the same over and over again here....)

If it still lags your Win7 is probably completely lame/overloaded with crap.
BTW, you may have as many 'cores' as you want, dosbox will only use a single one. So keep your system clean and again: kill EVERYTHING that isn't needed and runs on the background.

What say you? and then in windows 3.11 drive F is loaded with this English Version of Holiday Island. And i can run it...but game sometimes lag....dont know why.....

Yes its set to auto....lemme confirm first......yes cycles set to auto..and on the dosbox console screen...its saying "DOSBOX 0.74, CPU Speed 3000 Cycles, Frameskip 0, Programs: DOSBOX."

My current video driver is S3 864 1.41B5 800x600 64K colors Large Fonts.
I changed to this driver hardly 30 mins ago...Before that i was running windows 3.11 on S3 864 1.41B5 800x600 32K colors Small Fonts.
seems like no problem with the drivers or may be problem with all of the listed drivers.

By the way is that your computer screen shot running holiday island, the one in your previous post??? how did u make the holiday island window appear bigger? or u just resized the jpg file for the post ??? thanks....

The Fifth Horseman 10-06-2010 06:29 PM

cycles=auto is supposed to use autodetection to run DOSBox at optimum speed for the games. It doesn't always quite manage that trick, though, and the result is that DOSBox tries to run at speeds your machine can't quite handle and consequently lags.
Set the cycles value in dosbox.conf to a fixed one - eg 18000 - and cycleup and cycledown to fixed values as well - 500 to 1000 is recommended.

Set output to overlay or ddraw.
Aspect to true.
Scaler to whatever you really want (some scalers will slightly improve the images' appearance, but it's at the cost of the processing power - "normal" will work just fine, "none" if you prefer no mucking around with the display)
windowresolution to whatever you want the window size to be. I ran quite a few games under windowed mode in 800x600 resolution no problem.

No resizing whatsoever.
Windows 3.11 res is set to 800x600 256 colors but:
in dosbox conf 'windowresolution' is set to 1024x768 so dosbox stretches the 800x600 to a 1024x768 window.
There are some pro and contras using that method, for my personal taste it's ok, and it gives me max compatibility towards games, decide for yourself what you want.

I set to cpu cycles to 18000 and cycle up and cycle down values to 500 and 1000 respectively. but there's no good change in the performance... Still lags the same way. I extended the dosbox memory in the configuration file from 16 to 32. But that doesnt help either.

Search the differences.
@800x600 256 colors the burden on the CPU is much lesser then 800x600 64K/32K colors.

in dosbox conf 'windowresolution' is set to 1024x768 so dosbox stretches the 800x600 to a 1024x768 window.
Great advantage: you get a 1024x768 window but W3 is running@800x600 256, much lesser impact on the CPU.
Notice: that is the windowresolution that dosbox will give you, NOT windowsresolution.
Whilst the aspect ratio stays on a normal 4:3, no distorted view.

Also: what's all that crap running on the background?

I get the feeling I (and others) keep repeating ourselfs over and over, you seems to have a hard time reading what we tell you.

how to make it work with CDROM?

now i've been hunting this game for ages, i read every post and guidelines, and still i can't manage to get this game working, i am slightly getting used to dosbox, but i have no idea how to set it all up with "ISO" ? etc etc etc, i'm using windows 7 and i have the CDrom for this game.

Himmler 13-07-2010 01:10 PM

if it's an iso file, you must mount it as a virtual drive with daemontools or alcohol120%(or smth like that)

The Fifth Horseman 13-07-2010 01:39 PM

Check DOSBox readme.
If you have the actual CD and it's working, you just have to mount the CD drive (same as mounting the root of any other drive in DOSBox, except you add -t cdrom ).
If you have a CD image (ISO, BIN and so on), you can mount it using the IMGMOUNT command. It works almost identical to the regular MOUNT command for CD drives, except you have to specify the location of the image file instead of specifying the drive to mount.

Unregistered5126478124 13-07-2010 06:24 PM

What I wonder about is: The game page says the game is compatible with XP and VDMSound but not DOSBox! Can someone tell me if this is an error or if it has to be run under XP/VDMSound, and if it can be run under Win7?

Advisable is:
Get the CD image
Allow VfW (video for windows) to install in dosbox/W3.X
All works fine, intro/outro movies, sounds/music, news, etcetera etcetera... blah blah blah.

It's a Win3.x game, if you want to run it in dosbox you need to install Win3.x in dosbox first.

Do as you want, but personally I even won't try to run a Win3 or Win9x game on a modern OS.
The last thing I want is some ol'applic installing obsolete DLLs and whatever/whatnots on my new stuff.

Mighty Midget 13-07-2010 08:24 PM

Methinks the Win 3.x _detail_ there might be the answer ^^

Standard behavior. DOS wasn't big on autoruns and plug-and-play, and neither is DOSBox.

Try DOSBox set up with a copy of Windows 3.x . That seems to work just fine here.

Also, if setting up dosbox 0.74/Win3.x or VPC MsDos/Win3 it too complicated, and that's for all those on Win7, 32 or 64, you can get VirtualXP mode for Win7 (free) from MS, this game runs in the Win7/VirtualXP mode soft.

Note: you don't need to set up XP, you can download a 'ready to run' XP VHD directly from MS.
More info if needed:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx

However keep in mind, running W3.x games in WindowsXP mode on Win7 is matter of error and trial, many will run and many won't, after all, WindowsXP mode isn't developed with gaming in mind.
The best way to run W3.x on a modern OS is still the combination Dosbox 0.74/W3.x.

But I'm still not able to save games, any hints (except installing windows in dosbox)?

First Time

Hi, guys. I've spent about 2 hours scouring forums and reading&following tutorials. This is my first time installing a DOS game. I've tried to install this game on both Boxer and dosbox but neither works. I don't know whether I've skipped some steps but I don't have much exp running codes and the such.

On both boxer and dosbox i get the same message that "this program requires microsoft windows"

What am I doing wrong? I'm operating on Mac os x 10.5 and using boxer (latest version)

First game I looked up when I found out about dos through a youtube video. Holiday Island was my childhood! Thanks in advance for your help!

Obviously, the game requires Microsoft Windows :hihihi:

I guess your best option would be to install Windows 3.x in DOSBox and run the game there. Or you can just download the preconfigured Win3.11 here.

it's giving me the MCI error, although i've applied the patch and filename.dat. is there anything else i should have done?

thank you

freshly installed win u gave me (cool desktop pic :)), tried to play the game, same errors appeared.
tried fixing the filename.dat (removing spaces), didn't help.
tried with that .jar file the german guy provided, didn't help.
copied all file names from grafik folder to filename.dat (case sensitive), didn't help.
deleted folders with sounds... guess :p

but THEN i've deleted the folder with movies, and this is what happens

http://s14.postimage.org/l52bvszi9/hicd.jpg

i've checked all the .dat files, i've found - none containing names of the movies.

so... hmm... don't know what to do next (but to give up...)

The Fifth Horseman 31-03-2012 02:27 PM

Okay, I've finally managed to reproduce your problem.
The package I've posted already contains a solution, as I will explain in a moment.

This appears when running Windows using Windows\win.exe . Am I correct that this is how you started both the copy you have installed yourself and the copy from my package ?

That merely starts the GUI, without loading the sound drivers. I've included a file named windows.bat , which you need to run to start Windows with the proper driver complement.

Seems you screw up big somewhere.
Downloaded Fifth's file, unzipped with 7zip on my dosbox virtual C: , ran dosbox, input windows, select 'main', select ' file manager', browse to holiday dir, double click on holiday.exe et voila, runs as a charm.

So yeah, maybe give your dosbox version, mount lines and inputs, and what you use to unzip the files, do you have the needed subdirs...???
With more info someone must be able to figure out where you go wrong.

Once again: Fifth's file is 100% working.

To be complete, this is the dir structure you need, yes, all of them:

Must all be in your dosbox virtual C folder root.

[Edit]Seems Fifth is a faster typist than I am.......

Gameplay too slow

Hello everyone, I downloaded Holiday Island last night and I used the infinite credit cheat which would give you 4 billion dollars in credit (ctrl+shift+alt+g). Anyway, I built this super island with tens of hotels and hundreds of luxury housing installments and a very sophisticated communications network. I sat and waited for construction to be completed, I've been waiting two days now and the date inside the game has not changed. April 29. It seems it is stuck there and it will not budge? Is this normal? Does the game speed up sometime later? What should I do ?

Hi....check in the Game Options. There is a game speed bar to increase/decrease game speed. That should do the job!

I was searching the internet for this game 64-bit version and came up with this link:

http://www.boerse.bz/boerse/spiele-a...energizer.html

It's in German btw.

I couldn't access the download link at all. Can someone check if the game really do work on 64-bit w7? And if it is possible, can someone upload the file here?

Wow! Some people are talking about one of my favs! Holiday Island xD

It's a pity, that the game ends after you've played (round about) 50 years. If someone has an idea to continue playing the game - this would be awesome!

:D

Hi, I downloaded the game but doesn't work on W7.

I tried use DOSbox, but when i mount the game and launch "holiday.exe", it tell me "This program is a Windows 16-bit executable."

I don't understand, DOSbox is a program for simulate a 16 bit, no ??

So it's me doing it wrong ?

DOS is not Windows.
DOSBox only provides a DOS environment, this game needs a 16-bit Windows environment.

The good news is, it's possible to run a 16-bit version of Windows inside DOSBox - see this thread: http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=27770

I tried to follow your guide with NC (and the game Dolls). It's working.
But with Holiday Island, always same error.

I put W3 in C:\oldgames.

I must install W3 with DOSBox or just unpack it in the folder "oldgames" ?

And if i need install W3 by DOS, how ?
When i launch "windows.dat" with NC, i'm on desktop like : http://zupimages.net/up/14/47/z6f9.png
And DOSBox say : http://www.zupimages.net/up/14/47/15uy.png

Huuuu i'm lost

THX for taking the time for help me (and sorry for my english and my "bad level" computer)

Valper 17-11-2014 05:23 PM

Okayyy it's working !

(sorry for double post but i can't delete it :o )

I put the Holiday's game, in the W3's folder.
Launch W3 with DOSBox and launch Holiday there !

Thank You so much for your help and your work (guide) !

Have a nice day,

Bye :)
