Newbie here. Couldn't find the answers in the FAQ.

1. I came here via Googling because I was trying to find an abandonware without rips. I'd really rather play games the way the developer intended it. Are any of the games on abandonia ripped? In other words, do they have content removed? I noticed that almost everything on home of the underdogs has content ripped from it.

2. I noticed that VIPs are offered additional content that's normally restricted because of bandwidth. I also noticed that voice packs are not normally available out of bandwidth restrictions. Are VIPs allowed to download voice packs?

3. I couldn't post to the games discussion forum. Am I waiting for email verification? Or is there another reason why I couldn't post to that forum.

Thanks!
Caffeine!

I don't know WHY you cannot post in G-D forum, it seems that you ARE a member and are entitled to that right. As for VIP details, I am not one, although it would be nice to be, but I'd bet that they may get those things :)

1) Almost all the games are ripped from one way or another, unless they are really old games. The reason behind this is that ripped games are much smaller, thus it's easier and faster to download. Especially for 56k users.

What is usualy ripped in games is music and especially speech. Those two points really take a lot of space in a copied game. Some games would never have a decent size without them removed.

2) VIP Status (which I possess) is a reward given to those who help this site and this forum to thrive and progress. What is offered to the VIP's is both a well known and a well kept secret, and no VIP would break it willingly. I'll only tell you this; if you like old game gems, it's way worth it.

3) There is absolutly no restriction. I don't really understand what you are trying to say here, you should be able to post in the game threads even as a guest.

I think what he is trying to sy is, that he can't open a new thread in the Game discusion forum (only a handful of people can do that).

Too bad. I care more about enjoying games in their original form than the ease and quickness of downloading. Are there any abandonware sites that you know of that specialize in non-ripped games?

There are many ways to help a community thrive. Is monetary donations a viable method for the status?

I take it from Sebatianos's reply this is not correct.

Yes there are. And they're warez-sites, so don't even bother to ask any further.

Certainly not. It would be contrary to the whole idea if people could just buy their way in.

EoF is correct in saying that there is no posting restriction in the games discussion forum. However, that does not mean you can create new threads there. But why would you want to anyway? That forum really is just reserved for game discussion threads, so the only people who can create new threads are updaters and admins, obviously, because they're also the people who add the new games to the site.

 so you mean that if they add cutscenes music etc. it makes them warez-site?
Cause i agree with caffeine that are much better in original form

A. J. Raffles 22-11-2005 06:14 PM

No. But the sites which do specialise in that sort of thing happen to be warez sites.

Sure it's nicer to have the complete game, but if it would make the file three times as large it's not worth it.

Quintopotere 22-11-2005 06:40 PM

Dear caffeine, if you want to open a thread about a game, you have just to start it in the section "Favorite oldies and newbies"!
