LOL - I came to look at the walkthru again, to write hints, and saw the third screenshot.

I remember this game as being quite annoying at times. Even at the very beginning.
It is a good story, though.

The stupid thing was - the description of the 6inch hole is at the bottom of the wall description...
"There is a rope hanging out fo the hole" :doh:
