Allied General
I dug out my old allied general game and Have been trying to run it on WIN XP. It has worked a couple of times only to lock up. Normally when I try to run it I get a memory overrun error ( I have plenty of MEM) This is the windows version so I cant run it under DOSBOX. I have tried running in 256 colors with win95 compat and still cant get the bloody thing to run right. Any Ideas would be appreciated.

You need the file wing 32.dll to play on xp. Use Google to find it and put the file in your windows system file.

still nada
I had that dll file already. I replaced it with the new file still nothing
the exact message is as follows "out of memory (exnilptr)" HELP |
Try VPC2007+W98SE, great chances it will work fine.
[edit] Must have it around somewhere, will tryrun it later in VPC/W98SE ..... |
I solved that, but - as usually - I can't remember how. And I have a broken thumb, so I probably won't do research. :imsorry:

VPC=VirtualPC.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc720375.aspx Nothing to see with 'compability' settings. It creates an empty 'virtual' PC. Freeware owerdays: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow...c/default.mspx You also will need W98SE (or W98) to install in VPC. BTW, my Allied General game seems to be missing, can't try it out. Damn kids again, probably. |
It finally worked.
I had same problems with the game. Thanks to recommended choosing of Windows 98 vs 95 made all the difference. This is in regards to the out of memory (exnilptr)
What I did: 1) Go onto the cd in xp and change ALL .exe files to compat. settings: windows 95, and all boxes checked. 2) Now install it and you shouldn't encounter any error messages during install. 3) Now go into the folder where you installed it and change the compat feature for AG.exe to: windows 98 and all boxes checked. It should work. I hope this helps anyone out there having the same issue as I did. One side note, the wing dll others mentioned, is an older version, so you might want to be careful and make sure you back up the original as I have no idea what changing will have on your system. So check before you download something you might not need or could do damage |
out of memory issue
I had the same issue with out of memory... when I was setting the compatibility mode in my WinXP, I have selected Win98 and checked all the boxes available. However, I have found out that the memory error only appeared because the 640x480 resolution check box was checked. So finally I get it work with just the first check box selected (256 colors)
