Skywolf has a better version of Death Gate

Hi, I have the Big Box CD version of Death Gate, that means it has full sound and speech with 640X480 resolution Super-VGA compatible graphics, which is considerably better than the 320X240 VGA graphics of the version currently available (which seems to be the floppy edition?).

I have the files all ready, just need you to tell me what to do with them. :3

How many MBs does it take zipped?

Skywolf 05-03-2012 06:25 PM

(Ok that's wierd, it won't let me post in Chrome....)

The file is 333mb zipped.

By the way, as Death Gate is a bit dificult to get running if you aren't very computer savy (most of the Death Gate topics seem to be from people unable to work out what to do), would it be 0k for me to add a small text file explaining how to mount CDs in DosBox?

.

If it's over 300 MB we can't host it directly, but if you upload it somewhere you can post the link on the requests thread of the ISO Cellar and we'll add it.

Better than including the explanation in one archive, you can post it as a new thread on Troubleshooting and I'll move it with the rest of our tutorials (I think you can't post on the tutorials directly).

Not to be pedant, but I have the original CD game and iI don't see why there should be problems in dosbox.

I simply mount an image with imgmount directly in dosbox, install with install.exe and launch game from HD dir with dgate.
Runs fine
Really nothing special here.

Maybe that there are some peeps that will never understand how to launch a game correctly in dosbox, and that you always best follow the rules from the times of plain MsDos, now yeah, such ones will always be around.
:palm:

Understandable if them peeps never have seen a dos prompt.

@Japo, If I remember correctly, you can as member create topics in the tuto section.

[Edit]
Just checked my image: Full CD image (ISO) packed with 7zip is approx 270MB. 7z format, not zip.

[Editē]
Tried some things out, and:
If you try to launch from C prompt as this:
c:\>c:\dgate\dgate -> failure.
If you:

c:\>
c:\>cd dgate
c:\dgate>dgate
-> no problem.

So yes, as usual, do it the old ways and it works.

The reason I want to make a tutorial is because hunting around for them can be time-consuming and most people will just want to play the game. Playing Death Gate the CD version is slightly more complex than just mounting the folder, you have to mount the CD too.

Most people who want to play these games are not experts and many may be unfamiliar with Dosbox. Quick tutorials never hurt and it's easy to forget how daunting a command prompt can be.

I do know a friend who has webspace and could host the file, but is there somewhere else that's both free and permanent in case he says no?

0k, I have it ready, but where should I upload it?

Japo 10-03-2012 12:40 AM

The ISO Cellar is a directory of links, but the thing is that it's for games that we aren't able to host ourselves (because of size), and so it was founded as a place where people could post their links. But because Abandonia can't host those large archives, you have to find a hosting service yourself.

People usually resort to websites such as Fileserve, Rapidshare, Mediafire... or formerly Megaupload, which as you might know is no longer in business because of huge legal problems.

I think another tutorial is good, even if some of the existing ones already explain this. Competition from new and possibly more accessible tutorials may help people who are put off by the little help the can find. A new perspective from a different person may help other people with similar mindsets. There's no question that using CDs and image files in DOSBox is easy once you understand virtual drive mounting, but that's always been the entrance barrier of DOSBox precisely.

Ok, here is a temporary link. I hope to provide a faster link at a later time:

https://rapidshare.com/#!download|621tl3|1886722694|Death_Gate.zip|350042 |R~0|0|0|RapidPro%20expired.%20%2834fa3175%29

If someone could check this and make sure it is functioning, that would be really awesome.

Japo 11-03-2012 02:14 PM

Yes, it seems to be working, although I haven't completed the download, just started it. Thanks a lot.

Please post the link over at this thread.
