Gabriel Knight Trouble

I installed GK1, the sound is ok, the speed is normal, but I can't go to any other location.
His shield shows up, but the music stops and the cursor freezes.

The same thing happens on 2 computers, both on WinXP - with or without DOSBox.

I tried the French version, just in case, and it works like a charm (even the Sierra logo loads at once, not after a short delay, like in the English version).

Help, please http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/i/imslow.gif .

Sounds like you've got yourself a corrupted copy.

There is a version where this was a reported bug, it occurred just after the voodoo ritual/dance thingy in New Orleans where you see the woman killing a chicken or something. There was I fix I believe. But yeah, if it's happening right from the start, Fifth is most likely right :)

I also have this problem...

This also happens to me, and I got the game off 3 different sites, including some Scandanavian one. My cursor doesn't freeze, but the game crashes and goes back to DOS, giving me an error message etc. If this is a corrupt copy, why is it in such broad circulation?

Anyway, I downloaded the Spanish version, so I'll see if, as in your experience, the foreign language versions are crash-free. Maybe the English version out there is just problematic for some reason. Too bad, as I've never played this or any GK game and was really looking forward to it!

Are you sure the sound is set up correctly?
Perhaps you should look into getting the full CD version of the game?

I had this same problem. I tried to go to Gabriel's grandmother's house, and it would just set there with the shield cursor, doing nothing.

I switched to the CD version and everything is gravy.

Where did you get this alleged CD copy? If it was from the abandonia "cellar", as I understand it, unfortunately not everyone can access these files, because we haven't been active enough on the forums. This is unfortunate indeed... but if you *did* get the CD version from the "cellar", and the game works well enough (in dosbox I assume), then perhaps it's worth my time posting a bit more in the forums, in order to get it.... haha...

It is always worth it to post in the forum and join the community... as long as you don't spam to rack up them post count :p

And as far as I Know there is a Windows XP patch for GK1; with the patch this awesome game works like a charm under XP too.
