Vikings: Strategy of Ultimate Conquest - Black Screen

How does one make the game: Vikings: The Strategy of Ultimate Conquest work without the black screen which requires alt tabbing out and back in continuously? There was another thread in which someone brought this up, but it was asked to be moved here, and I didn't quite figure an answer. I've got the CD version from the ISO cellar, and all else seems to work fine.

I've tried running it in compatibility mode, in 256 color, with visual themes disabled...all that jazz, but nothing seems to prevent the blackness :(

Haz been answerred, but it's kinda burried in the topic...

I'm not sure about Dosbox+win3.x because game is not designed for win3.x

And yet it works in dosbox 0.74/W3

Crap, those Danish villagers are kicking my Norwegian ar*e
But works better (read: smoother-better sounds *I think*) in VPC-W98SE

Notice: VfW 1.1 (Video for Windows) must be installed, the game needs it.
If it's advisable to install that obsolete VfW 1.1 on modern hardware, is arguable.
Me thinks you're better safe than sorry and run it in VPC (or dosbox-W3.1)

My two cents.
BTW: I don't like the game, at all, I won't spend more time on it.

Something that can help you:

That or VPC2007/W98Se (or W95)

Thanks for the help, but I can't seem to get it working still, I'm not very good with these other programs...I tried virtual pc, but got as far as it needing an operating system...

as for the dosbox win 3 I got it up and running, mounted the disc drive, installed the game, and it wouldn't play, so then I just copied the game folder into the win3 folder, I tried again, asked for 256 colors, I double clicked the 256 color command in explorer, and then I couldn't start up win 3 anymore...

so clearly my vpc and win 3 skills are not up to par here...

Okay never mind, I got it working in the dosbox win 3 version...I had to change the color mode in win 3 itself...for some reason using the file provided by the creator would just prevent win 3 from opening anymore :/ now for actually learning how to play the game...

FYI:
Win3 never liked to change desktop colors-res whilst running, was one of the best methods to crash your whole system. :p

Much better is to work from your dosprompt, quit your windows session and whilst in c:\windows> run setup from there.

Should you need additional drivers:
You'll find all you need@ http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=9405

FYI: the drivers-settings I normally use are:
S3 864 1.45B5 1024x768 256 colors.
Those ol' S3 drivers are almost compatible with everything you throw at, even if they aren't the nicest ones.

(But when a game can run in higher res and I really want something that looks nice I switch to SVGA high res TSENG drivers.)

Reading Windows 3.11 and SVGA in the same sentence makes my head spin... :ouch:

:mhh: ......? Why?

Eagle of Fire 17-03-2011 07:29 AM

Because SVGA was really reserved to the "elite" who could afford it back in the days of Win 3.11...
