I've just got from a friend Interstate 76. That guy has Win 98, so he managed to install the game, but I can't. When I try to start it under XP, no matter with what compatibility mode, I get

What should I do? I tried running it in DOSBox, but I get "Illegal command win setup.exe".
:sos:

Thanks!

Okay, I had that problems many times and It has to do something with SP2.

The way I fixed it:

1) Go to c:\windows\repair
2) Copy the config.nt file
3) Paste it in c:\windows\system32

If it says the same for autoexec.nt, do the same thing. Hope that helps!

Thanks, but it didn't help. I don't have config.nt, nor autoexec.nt in windows\repair (and yes, I've enabled the "see hidden files" option).

I googled a bit for you...

Unzip the file attached to this post in the system32 folder. ;)

Well duh. C'mon Abi, it's the single oldest problem being archived in the Troubleshooting Archive.

You can find the thread here... <_<

Well then, excuse me because I forgot to look there. I never had XP before, so I didn't know if this is a common problem or not. In the end, I googled and found the Windows Knowledge Base help file for it. Thanks for being helpful anyway.

You can always get a second HDD and put Win98 on it. :D

In all seriousness, this is a good plan. The only problem you'll have is that a modern machine will run your game *way* too fast; but then you knew about that problem already, and would have used one of the CPU slowdown programs that are available...

I've gone one step further and rebuilt a Pentium 150MHz machine with a 4Gb Hard disk, 64Mb RAM (do you know how difficult it is to get cheap SIMM memory?) and DOS 6.2 I now just need to find my favourite HIMEM driver from days of yore...

I knew I should have kept my old computer...

Anyway, I don't think I'm going to other to get an old computer for Windows 98. That thing is horrible in my opinion (and the BSODs made me tremble whenever I started my computer :P ). DOSBox or some program to slow down my computer work very well. (hmm... slow down the computer... what program to use... oh, yes; my antivirus, nothing can slow my computer better than BitDefender 10 while playing a game LOL )

Oh, Abi, you call yourself an Abandonware fan and you didnt know the autoexec.nt and config.nt files? Shame on you!
