Fool 30-12-2004 10:43 PM

I've tried to play Wizardry 7 and have done the following so far:

1. mounted the WIZARDRY cd as drive g:
2. run install.exe from msdos
3. mounted drive g in dosbox
4. tried to run wizardry.bat in dosbox

But, I get the error message
"unable to open scenario.hdr"

I believe that it may have something to do with the files being read-only. However, when I try to change that, it prompts access is denied.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Actually, it's easy (when you know how to do it :bleh:):
Skip step 1 and 3 if you have that already.
1. Get Daemon Tools from our site. Install the program, restart your PC.
2. Right-click on the Daemon Tools-icon in the left quick-start area in Windows. Mount the Wizardry-file as a drive (no matter what letter, let's say G: in this case).
3. Get DosBox from the same place you got Daemon Tools from. Install it.
4. Now run the following commands in DosBox when you start it:
mount d g:/ -t cdrom
mount c c:/
d:

install.exe d (this will create a folder on the c: drive called WIZ-CD and copy some needed files to it, this drive will be then automatically remounted in DosBox, you NEED to do it the first time only)
cd w7
vinstall.exe
(to configure the sound / music, display can be left as VGA, etc.)
wizardry.bat

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: These steps must be repeated every time you start DosBox, except install.exe d and vinstall.exe. As the needed files will be installed already the next time you want to play the game, run the steps in that row instead:
mount d g:/ -t cdrom
mount c c:/
cd c:/wiz-cd/7
d:
cd w7
wizardry.bat

As for vinstall.exe, in order for the options to be saved permanently, run it in Windows instead, not DosBox and set to the needed options. Save them, and every time you run DosBox, the options will be already there.

5. In order to save you the work, open the file dosbox.conf and at the last line where following is written:
[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.

add the second time steps under it. They will then be run every time you start DosBox automatically. Have fun with the game yet! :ok:

What about saving ingame?

FreeFreddy 31-12-2004 11:55 AM

In the main menu, go to configurations and enter in the "path"entry above the savegame exactly the letter C:\ (or /, doesn't matter). The game will then be saved in the directory c:\wiz-cd\7. Just press ENTER when the game asks to "insert the disc in the drive c:/". ;)

BLOODUK 31-12-2004 12:09 PM

Hey it worked, THANKS ALOT!

Only pain in the rear is having to enter password on everygame restart

Guest 31-12-2004 12:45 PM

Thank you very much FreeFreddy.

FreeFreddy 31-12-2004 12:52 PM

You're welcome. Have fun with the game yet. :ok:

Im trying to but it doesnt have a chance with eye of the beholder, i dont like NOT seeing the monsters till the appear

I've follwed these steps exactly,
I am very interested in exploring DOS,
but it is frustrating when everything goes smoothly up to a point.

Why is "Install.exe" an illegal command???

Hey... I used to own crusaders many years ago... but don't have the manual any more. Is there any way to bypass the "security clearance" feature of the game?

Mapamann 28-03-2005 04:47 PM

hi@ all...

have done it so and it worked...but is there a chance tu change the language from the game to german??

that would be nice...

Winston 29-03-2005 12:33 AM

Ok... Followed your steps and they are not working, i get 'Illegel command install'.
I tried to do Dir to see what was wrong, and it shows nothing. Does it not detect the mounted drive from daemon?

I tried copying the cd to my Harddrive and installing from it onto c:/ but then it said
"Copying 'c:\w7\scenario.hdr' to 'c:\w7\scenario.hdr' ...
Can't open input file.

I'm in E:\wiz7cd but its trying to copy from c: ...

Any thoughts?

Winston 29-03-2005 12:44 AM

Ok, i Figured it out!

First i just want to say I'm an idiot...

Thats the only problem i had!

nicolas 10-04-2005 12:07 AM

:sniper: I got this problem too the illegal command :ranting: when I do the install.exe d

PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP! :help:

Dima 19-04-2005 01:12 AM

I found a download of the game which does not require installation, you simply unzip the file and play the game, you do need to be running it in DOSBOX, and mount the C:\ driver or another drive where you have unpipped the game. I can't remember the web site but I'm sure I got it from searching google.com I still have the zip file that I downloaded which I could e-mail to you, just submit a post on this website.

Can I ask a question? My topic is on 2 page, so I think it is a small chance, that somebody will answer to me, if I post a message there. Where could I buy weapons? My party wearing arms, that were given to them in the beginning of the game (except few trophies)! My clerics fight with quarter staves and fighters with longswords (only.. hm, hm... me :ok: fighting with trophy walriblade  ). And one mage is unarmed at all, because I haven't a staff to her! In New City there is only one weaponry shop, where that goddamn Umpani asks me who had sent me to him, and I don't know, what to answer.

MantricSpork 21-04-2005 03:37 AM

Ok I dunno if anyone else was having this problem, but mine was telling me illegal error kind of stuff etc, but what I did to solve it was uninstall DOSbox and reinstall it and now it works fine. Hope that helps someone. :ok:

SANCHEZ 22-04-2005 02:52 AM

Dima can you please email it to me at removed@something.com?
I don't use dos-box and can't get it to work with VDM.

Thanks heaps.

When the Umpani asks you, tell him: "blackmarket (or maybe "black market", not sure).
Now off you buy. :ok:

Nick 25-04-2005 08:33 AM

Thanks man. Without you I don't know, what should I do. Probably I had to complete the game with my first given weapons.

Gamefreak 25-04-2005 06:15 PM

Well, you would be able to meet some other weapon traders later in the game anyway.
Also keep in mind that with the increasing level of the party members and with the overall better stuff your party members will wear you will also be able to buy better things by the Umpani and the Gorn traders. And not only them, but also all fixed, non-NPC traders in the game. Until some certain level, though. ;)

kyle 02-05-2005 10:35 PM

can somebody tell me the hotkey for the wizardry 7 mini map??? also known as the journey map.

Data 03-05-2005 08:05 AM
